A straight shot of 95.6% ABV alcohol has no smell or flavor. It's just unusually cold at first (even when the bottle is warm), which slowly turns to your mouth and throat burning so badly that you want to throw up. 30 minutes later and I'm still feeling it.

It's so strong it is actually hygroscopic. So, if you leave it for a while not completely tightly capped, it will absorb water out of the air.

if that were a fiberglass boat it would be destroying the hull, yeah.

Nah, even that traps a lot of heat and moisture. I have some full shell studio monitors but I can only use them for 45 minutes or so. My ears are trash ever since I did concert security in high school.

This is going to sound like STDH.txt and I'll try not to exaggerate, but my freshman year of college my sober roommate poured maybe 8 oz of Everclear into a beer bong and chugged it. Immediately after he went downstairs with his friends to smoke a joint but only made it about six steps before he passed out cold and his buddies carried him right back in and tossed him on the couch. He pissed himself and every couple of hours would get up for a few minutes and say "dude, what happened" and then he was out again.

Nah I've seen something like this. I watched a guy at a pool party chug a fifth of wild turkey like it was iced tea. He made it around to the side of the pool and fell directly onto his face. Didn't try to catch himself or anything. First thing that came out from under his face was blood, then wild turkey vomit. Amazing times.

Sadly I don't know that anyone got video, but during a bday dinner for my brother at a Chinese restaurant they brought out one of those lotus candle birthday things that opens up after lighting it. My sister made a sailboat out of napkins and wooden chopsticks since my brother loves boats.

It was a bit close to the lotus thing and when it opened up one of the candles then lit the paper boat on fire. It was rather amazing, and also fortunate that it didn't set off the suppression system.

Apple’s HomePod is a great sounding but ideologically flawed speaker, but it turns out there’s another major problem with the smart speaker aside from its lack of support for Spotify: apparently the silicone base of the HomePod can damage wooden furniture, with multiple outlets (including The Wirecutter and Pocket Lint) reporting that leaving the speaker on top of wooden surfaces can cause a white ring to form.

Apple has confirmed the issue to The Wirecutter, stating that “the marks can improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface,” with the company also recommending that users “try cleaning the surface with the manufacturer’s suggested oiling method” if the white rings don’t fade. Given that HomePods aren’t meant to be put on a soft surface (the tweeters fire down, so putting it on cloth messes with the reflectivity of the sound), it’s not the sort of problem you can solve by just putting down a cloth underneath it, either.

That's presumably about it only supporting Apple's garbo ecosystem (Apple Music and iTunes), as opposed to Spotify and whatever else people in the actual, real world use.

What the hell is it doing? Blasting the wood with a sonic weapon?

Edit: Apparently it's a chemical reaction between the silicone base and the wood's surface treatment.

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

That's pretty loving nuts because properly cured silicone is one of the most inert compounds we know how to make. It doesn't stick to anything, doesn't react with anything, doesn't absorb water, doesn't melt. Medical appliances are made of it. You can eat it with no effects other than weird poops.

I wonder how they hosed that one up.

Apple music subscribers are about to surpass Spotify soon. Apple also sells more iPhones in a week than most other companies do in a year (with the exception of Samsung), so a lot of people in the real world use them.

For example in all of 2017 Google sold about 4 million Pixels. That sounds great and all but Apple sells a million iPhones per day.

It's a microphone, first and foremost. The way these big companies have convinced everyone to call this all-listening, all-the-time microphone connected to an AI a "smart speaker" is the schad on everyone.

The ideology is "your privacy is worth a lot of money to us, but nothing to you".
