Just in case anyone hasn't already seen it, Phrosphor is kludging together a mercenary campaign game using the HBS Beta and Mercenary management tools meant for the tabletop game. Its pretty cool so far, and just makes me even hungrier for this game to come out!

Also just as a reminder, the live Q&A returns today at 12 PM Pacific / 3 PM Eastern (or roughly 7 and a half hours from this post for those who aren't in those regions) on NGNGTV. I know a lot of Goons have strong feelings of disgust towards the NGNG tv but they don't interfere with the Q&As, which are completely HBS run. Don't expect a release date announcement then, because if they were to announce it I imagine it would in a Kickstarter update immediately.

Also while that's probably true, obviously you don't announce in advance when you will be making an announcement a month in advance of release, if you get my meaning.

I'll admit that I wouldn't be entirely surprised if today they put out a Kickstarter update about a release date, but that is mostly because I know THEY know the Q&A will be overrun by that question even if they put a flashing text box saying "No release date, stop asking" on the stream. Also because I expect there will be about 2 months between date given and date reached, so if Early 2018 means anything realistic we're running low on time.

Or they start the Q&A but it just works like the Playstation 2 press conference where the only thing they said was the price and walked away. "Release date: NOW." *stream cuts to footage of fireworks for the rest of the duration*

I'd actually be weirdly annoyed if it released today because it's my brother's birthday and I wanted to get him this game a lot but it's not out yet so I got something else instead.

Heads up, there is activity on SteamDB relating to BattleTech. I very very much doubt release is imminent (they want to market I'd guess) but a simultaneous launch of preorders and the release date might be realistic.

Q&A finished up. Big news is Maurader and Warhammer are both NOT in the game at launch. When asked if there were reasons, Mitch just responded with a very firm "yes." So the Harmony Gold lawsuit is taking its toll. Replacing them for now are the Black Knight and the Catapult K2. Otherwise no date given other than '2018.'

Sky Shadowing posted:Q&A finished up. Raven isn't making it either, they said they wanted to fine tune electronic warfare before adding it. I guess they took a look at how much work it would be for one light mech and cut the whole thing. Mentioned lots of new animations, both for falls and for melee. Examples given were the ShadowHawk's punch and an atlas doing an overhead smash down on top of a smaller Mech. Sounds like the off map artillery and aerospace assets have been cut as well, though allies may still call in artillery strikes. Loans are gone, if you run out of money thats it. Destroyed mechs give you a salvage piece of that mech, get three and you can use them to rebuild the naked chassis of that mech. They mentioned being able to buy these salvage pieces. Weapon variants are still in, represented by manufacturers. No trade offs with the weapons, they are just better in some respect. Brief mention of other things you can fit on a mech; improved arm actuators for better melee, better gyros for more stability, heat banks for higher overheat threshold. No idea if these involve tradeoffs or not.

Wow, arty and air strikes are gone too? Surprising amount of stuff hitting the chopping block as we get closer to <no release date announced>. Wonder why allies can call them in, since that'd still require the code. I guess if you never have to deal with enemies throwing them at you either that's less annoyance, but still sad to see them go.

By the sounds of it they just removed the parts that let you hire/buy the support teams and items themselves. It probably got thrown out when the simplified the finance simulation. Best moment of the stream was when someone asked them how long you could operate just above bankruptcy and there was genuine confusion on whether they question referred to the game or HBS themselves.

Arty and airstrikes were rubbish in MC1 and 2. And in a turn based game they'll either be 'incoming damage you can do nothing about, gently caress you' or 'I guess everyone moves out of this circle before the next turn'.

My instinct is that deployable aoe abilities that force a 'move from here or take damage' work really well in cover based games like XCOM where they force a real dilemma, but don't really make any sense in a game like battletech where the concept is 'knights jousting' and the default is that movement is life and standing still is mostly a bad idea.

I'm actually disappointed about the offmap assets, I like feeling like I'm bigger than One Lance On The Map. Those were a bit of a help to feel that way, but... probably was hard to balance.

I think they have sat down and, led by Mitch who seems to be quite the realist, they have brutally cut everything that was holding them back from release. If the game does well I fully expect an add-on of some kind that brings a lot of this stuff back in.
