I have literally sat in a room full of booze and guns and survival supplies with a bunch of deluded assholes who thought TEOTWAWKI was going to happen that very night. I have seen the lengths that delusion can drive an individual too and have also seen how some people become so desperate for TETOWAWKI to start that they convince themselves that they are firing its first shots e.g. Dylann Roof.

Also quite a few people do enjoy my posts in this thread and my posts in this thread (and its earlier USPOL incarnations) have generated interesting discussions for years now, Its only been the last few months where every time I post a vocal few lose their minds over it and make the thread more about me than even I am trying to. I am trying to contribute my experiences and perspectives to this discussion because they are quite relevant.

Calvin and Hobbes is quite literally the only actually-funny newspaper comic I've ever read. I've seen some that are occasionally "kinda witty" or make accurate political points, but not very consistently or at the same level.

edit: Like I remember some years back I thought "I bet Calvin and Hobbes actually wasn't as good as I thought it was as a child" and went and read some of the strips and was surprised to find out that it actually was that good.

Wallace The Brave is probably the closest anyone’s come to recapturing that magic:

http://www.gocomics.com/wallace-the-brave

It’s still not quite as good as C&H, but literally nothing is.

Fake Edit: Spirit of the Staircase isn’t bad either.

He is supposedly good friends with Berkeley Breathed, so I keep hoping that B.B. coming out of retirement will bring Waterston out too.

edit: now that I think about it, Waterston might have done something for the BC revival. There was a C&H based strip where Opus and Calvin traded cats, but idk if Waterston did any of the art.

Yeah, people always say this poo poo about various children's media, and they're usually just referring to things that aren't particularly funny or interesting and more or less amount to dumb "lol marriage amirite?!" type jokes, but C&H actually has a lot of genuinely good stuff in retrospect. I've been truly shocked to reread some of these and see how good they were. I'm honestly not sure how they ever managed to get published in a newspaper alongside all the other dreck that ends up on the funny pages.

Is there some specific reason he stopped making cartoons? I seem to remember this being the case, and his reason being something that was good and made sense.

Eh, it's mostly "truisms about parenting/life that make parents reading nod their heads and think 'haha yes this is certainly a thing that reminds me of the common teenage/parenting experience.'" It's better than most comics, but that isn't saying much.

I think Watterson didn't want C&H to end up being just another comic page zombie series like Garfield or Marmaduke.

He ran out of ideas, and figured that's the time to stop.

Which is astounding given comic strip creators.

the only time he's really done anything comics related since is I think an Opus strip and I believe he did something for the ended-too-soon (because the creator got Parkinson's) strip Cul-de-Sac, which he basically considered the spiritual successor to C&H.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Watterson really hates capitalism in general and how comics turn into merch zombies like Peanuts and Garfield, iirc. He apparently stopped signing C&H books because they kept showing up on Ebay.

I'd had the complete Calvin and Hobbes in an Amazon wishlist for a while and this thread reminded me to look at it and it was less than $50 for the paperback version so I grabbed it. I had all the books when I was a kid but I have no idea where they are now.

Somebody made a comics documentary and somehow managed to persuade him to do a short phone interview. It’s an OK watch if you enjoy enough webcomics to have an idea of who the other people they talk to are.
