I was in McCormack's electorate for a while, he has it by default because his predecessor was popular and respected and because none of the other parties really ever bothered to contest the seat, not that anyone who's not born and bred in electorates like his ever stood a chance anyway.

Staff in pubs owned by Woolworths are secretly recording and sharing detailed personal information - such as gambling habits or even favourite football teams - about high-turnover gamblers to encourage them to stay in the venues longer and increase their losses. The data is being shared on a Google drive among all 400 pubs in Woolworths' network across the country in a bid to increase the chain’s poker machine revenue, which accounts for 10 per cent of Woolworths’ annual revenue. I miss the old hospitality, which was more about serving food and drinks and less about collecting personal details in the gambling area to upload to a massive Woolworths spreadsheet.

A former Melbourne school principal wanted on 74 charges of child abuse will remain in custody under psychiatric care in Israel, after two hearings on Tuesday saw her extradition trial postponed again. In an hour-long hearing in the Jerusalem District Court on Tuesday, Malka Leifer's lawyer dramatically threw his client's medications on a table to prove that the 54-year-old was not mentally fit to face trial and that a new report on her mental health was "rubbish". Leifer's case marks the first time in Israel that a criminal matter has been revived over claims of mental illness, after being frozen for almost three years. Israeli police re-arrested Leifer earlier this month, accusing her of faking mental illness to avoid extradition to Australia after new surveillance footage from an undercover operation in December showed her going about her daily life in the ultra-Orthodox West Bank settlement of Emmanuel. Leifer had been living there freely since her case was frozen in 2016, when a Jerusalem judge determined she was unfit to stand trial. Yet an Israeli state attorney said on Tuesday that a new in-depth psychiatric assessment, ordered at the last court hearing on February 14, found that she is well enough to face criminal proceedings. Prosecutor Matan Atikva told the court that the report is long and detailed, and “more than enough to prove she must face trial". However, the report was never signed by the city’s chief psychiatrist, leading Leifer’s lawyer to say he did not have enough time to view the report written by two court-appointed doctors who have been observing Leifer since her arrest two weeks ago. He accused the prosecution of failing to provide him with all the evidence collected by the police, evidence that they say show Leifer was faking her illness. “Everything that was presented in court today has no legal value whatsoever,” defence lawyer Yehuda Fried said, telling the judge that he also had not been shown other investigative materials, including the video surveillance footage that led to Leifer’s arrest on February 12. The District Court judge agreed, ordering the prosecution to supply the defence with all investigative materials, including new video surveillance footage, by March 28. Arriving shackled and handcuffed to court, flanked by Israeli police, Leifer’s red-velvet turban was the only thing visible above the dock for the court’s hour-long proceedings as she kept her head bowed the entire time. Leifer fled Australia the same night accusations first arose in 2008, with several allegations of abuse during her time as principal of the Adass Israel girls school in Melbourne. The defence is demanding to see all evidence and material regarding the case and is seeking to bring in a long list of experts involved in the case since 2014 to prove she is unfit for trial. Ridiculing the prosecution’s claims, Fried asked a family member of Leifer to produce her medications, which he tossed on the table, saying the defence had falsely argued that she was not taking medications by “going to the wrong pharmacy” and that the new report on her mental health was “rubbish”. He also argued that the new report does not mean earlier conclusions on her mental state were invalid, and must be considered as part of any new trial as they were previously upheld by the former judge. Speaking outside court, Fried said he expected the case to be lengthy and it could take years to see its conclusion. But the prosecution said that, although it will be a long and unprecedented process with the potential for several appeals, the case is stronger than it was six months ago. Leifer will reappear before a judge on March 7 when the court will re-examine the terms of her detention.
