Echoing what a few others have said here, sleep and a sleep schedule where you see daylight for more than a few hours are huge. I fought with myself like hell during one particularly bad bout of SAD and just avoided a group of people dragging me down about the changes I was trying to make. The person that's given you access to their hearth and home after everything you've put yourself through is most likely the person that's best in your immediate life. Listen to Tremek.

Update: Dave has expressed interest in learning AutoCAD/CNC stuff, and while I'm pretty ignorant of the subject in general my gut says this could be a good compromise between using the spatially aware parts of his brain to make money, and being able to do it pretty much anywhere without abusing himself physically. In the interest of supporting this pursuit I have dug a Dell Precision M4500 out of the closet and am going to put an OS on it. I think this thing may have a Quadro card in it. With this known, are any of you CAD people? Can you guys help direct Dave to resources that will help him learn this stuff? We also discussed him going over to check out this joint tomorrow - less than 10 minutes away - and seeing what they may be able to help him with in terms of orienting on said goals.

Is there a makerspace or something in the area? Those guys usually love helping newbies figure out CAD basics, and then you get to play with the laser cutter.

Seconding makerspace, or if that fails, a decently-appointed public library may offer basic classes on such things. My local library is in possession of at least a 3D printer at this point, and hosts maker fair type events every so often.

Get him a copy of Fusion 360 and hit youtube. It is free for people making less than $100k per year with it so it is wildly popular with hobbyists and professionals alike so lots of instructional videos. Makerspaces are a good place to learn how to use it to make physical objects.

Fusion 360 is the professional tool that you can get for free, yes. Another option, is to start with TinkerCAD, which is literally made for children. It's a good way to be introduced to some CAD basics without having to dive head first into a full-blown professional CAD interface. There's also lots of tutorials for it and such. And it's less system-demanding than Fusion. I know some people who have worked at Autodesk, and have a friend who teaches CAD to kids, and my wife does some CAD stuff and 3d printing as part of her art practice, so if you have any specific questions I can get answers.

The package has been delivered to the payload. Or is it the payload has been delivered to the package. Idk. Either way - I could use your collective help in getting Dave to do Good Things w/ said equipment as I'm out of bandwidth for many reasons including surprise Europe travel in a few days and well a crazy life in general. Can you guys try to ensure he's getting guidance on how to use said device for learning and not becoming a shrine to furry porn? kthx

Honestly, you can learn CAD successfully from any full-blown CAD package. A lot of the concepts are pretty universal, it's just the interfaces that change. Fusion is a good choice. I'm a Solidworks guy myself, but that's because it's all I've used since I've been in Industry and everything else feels weird at this point. Whatever you do stay away from SketchUp. It's loving trash and anyone who has any CAD experience will be driven insane quickly while trying to do stuff.

If you want to design a 2x4 work bench and then hate yourself afterwards it is great for that. This stuff is easy enough to learn without paying for it. You got an A in 3d design so spend some time on youtube and get yourself up to speed and you will be drawing fully dimensioned dicks in no time. helno fucked around with this message at 04:35 on Mar 1, 2018 |

I pirated Solidworks four years ago and now it's all I know. I can whip something up fairly quickly, though I am also hitting the Q&A message boards if I ever need to do something with it that's slightly out of my scope. Plus side is, always learning. Don't pirate Solidworks 2017 (or 2014 if the computer is a bit slower/clogged with furry porn) or spend $30 on a year of educational version.

# ? Mar 1, 2018 04:45 |

I've gotten free access to Solidworks educational licenses through the school for the last 3 years, it's hard to believe at this point that I've only been doing CAD that long. Not sure what I'm gonna use once I graduate and my last license expires. Probably whatever package my eventual employer uses tbh. Actually that's a good point; like others have said, once you grok the basic concepts of how to make 2d drawings and turn them into 3d parts, it's a lot easier to switch between programs; you're doing the same basic operations in all of them, after all.

Ive got experience with solidworks and now NX Unigraphics with my current job. Both have quite a learning curve for those with no experience, but there are entire courses on YouTube for both. If you think Sketch Up is bad, try anything in 3D with AutoCAD.

um excuse me posted:If you think Sketch Up is bad, try anything in 3D with AutoCAD. Christ, I've never used it but I've heard stories. You have to draw elevations from all 3 axes and then manually pin together common elements to define the 3d shape, right? That's roughly what I've gathered.
