In my continuing activity where I play increasingly lovely RPGmaker horror games while my friends watch I just played one where the twist was that the whole thing was just a haunted house made for fun...but by actual monsters with actual magic, and also the protagonist is a pumpkin homunculus and the other main character is a witch so this leaves them completely unfazed. The witch even goes "yeah your puzzles and jump scares were fun for me but my friend is really ditzy so she'll definitely be in trouble" and then it turned out that when you thought a spell was taking hold of her or something it was just that she has a bad habit of falling asleep in random places It was kind of incredible. Ib and Witch's House were better but this is my third favorite RPGmaker horror game (though "horror" goes in scare quotes for this one)

Do any of you mess around with sous vide cooking? Is it as useful as it seems to be? I imagine we'd use it to just prepare a bunch of meals ahead of time. Meh.com has a cooker for $49 and we're tempted to order it.

How do you make a horror game in RPGmaker? EDIT: Though I'm forgetting that RPGmaker can be used to make more than your traditional turn-based FF style RPGs. I was trying to figure out how you'd make one of those scary.

You plop the cuts in, get it near the right temperature, then sear it on high heat to brown. Also it is exceptionally good for eggs. If you don't eat of lot of those two things it might not get enough use though

Internet Kraken posted:How do you make a horror game in RPGmaker? Generally a combination of gore (corpse party, mad father), being stalked (ao oni, from next door), or just surreal imagery (yume nikki, ib). Think of it less as "an rpg maker title that is a horror game" and more as "a top down adventure game" since a majority of them are just adventure games where you walk around to gather key items or hit specific plot triggers or solve puzzles while getting spooked. Also consider that one of, if not the, first horror games was a top down rpg called Sweet Home. CharlieFoxtrot posted:Sous vide makes preparing cuts of meat like steaks a snap. We don't use a lot of steak but we go through chicken and fish like nobody's business.

I could make some recommendations depending on the ones you've played. I really like "From Next Door" but that game is literally just a video game version of Junji Ito's The Window Next Door so if you aren't up for Junji Ito-style horror but as a short RPG maker game then it probably isn't gonna be for you.

Witch's House, Mad Father, Hello Hell...o, Ib, and Trick&Treat. I thought it was more but I guess I haven't played that many. I think our group is kinda tired of them though and we'll be moving to other things to do as a group. Probably a mystery game we can try to solve together.

I don't always like it and sometimes I think it suffers from everything being overexplained but the dude does good art and I think he's one of the better horror manga people out there, especially when compared to something like, say, Franken Fran where it just kinda feels overly mean spirited. I guess I'd compare Junji Ito to Stephen King where they both are pretty good with the horror and some of their best works are just short one-offs and some of their longer works suffer from going too in-depth into the weirdness and the horror.

I don't recall Ib being super scary outside of one super tense sequence where you play as Garry (you probably know what I'm talking about) but, imo, Ib is probably the best of that bunch since it provides an all-around spooky, surreal, dreamlike world to play through and doesn't force a gutpunch ending on you where it's like "haha you wasted your time, everything's bad, nothing's good" like a couple of the other games you mentioned. What ending did you get in Ib? That sucker's got a bunch of them based on choices you make throughout so I'm curious which one you ended up with.

We played through twice and then looked up an all ending video on youtube. I got the one where you escape with Garry but don't have enough points for him to remember you on the first one Ib owns incredibly hard for how simplistic it is. Apparently there's a corner of the internet that will (or did) argue endlessly on Garry vs Mary. I'm firmly on team Mary, myself. e: the gutpunch ending of Mad Father was the only remotely good part. I really did not like that game.

Maybe we'll pick up the Meh one since it seems to be the cheapest available one (and it is discounted to $49 from $88) Hey cheetah7071, if you want, I know of an rpgmaker horror game you could play if you want something funny-bad. It's called Creepypasta Land. Basically, some kid from Brazil made an rpgmaker game where all the creepypasta characters come together for a HUGE party and you're a kid going through and helping your friends and collecting special custom yugioh cards and it's just kind of adorable and endearing in its badness. Alternatively, if you are curious about a free rpgmaker title fangame that has a lot of love and effort put into it, there is the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure rpgmaker title. That game has a lot of love put into it, like, crazy amounts of dedication to making a game that suffers from difficulty (so imo just do what I did and cheat your level to max from the start) but it just has so many details and so much love put into it and its plot is really good too (the original parts of the plot, not the parts where you're just following what happened in Part 3 of JJBA).

The former sounds kinda funny, maybe I'll check it out. Looking for things mostly in the 60-120 minute range since that's what works for my group to play through a game together so the jojo one doesn't sound so good for that.

For Mad Father, I didn't mind the leadup since the whole game was basically "girl learns that her beloved father is actually a monster and that he is the cause of so much pain for so many people" but then the ending is just "oh well I guess the girl grew up and decided to be just like her dad even though she hates what he did to people" and it just annoys me to no end.

The problems with Mad Father were mostly gameplay related not story related. I mostly like the twist ending because I was able to call it from hints throughout the game. e: I'm not also sure your read on the ending is completely right. There's bits and pieces throughout that say that what she didn't like about her dad wasn't the evil stuff he did, it was forcing her mom away and trying to murder her, personally. Murdering everyone else was A-OK Mary is a sweet child and it's not her fault she's a painting golem thing

Yeah, the jojo one is neat and you could probably do it in 60 to 120 minutes but a lot of the game is gonna be spent exploring due to how the game is set up (you have X number of days to get to your destination, if you're following a guide then you'll want to be at certain hub areas before certain days so that you can trigger certain events, some events are tied to triggering events in previous hubs, and there are various character events spread throughout the hubs that are based around having a specific character in your party when you go to interact with something). Enough of your time is gonna be spent exploring the hubs probably that you'll end up going over that 120 mark. The first one is relatively short though, it can definitely fit into that mark. That's about how long the LP on youtube I watched took to complete it.
