That's true. I moved her from far northern Chicago suburbs and people here are shocked when I tell them that the cost of living in Oregon is LESS than it is in Illinois.

Fear is the glue that holds society together. It's what makes people suppress their worst impulses. Fear is power.

And at the end of fear, oblivion.

My place in the SW Chicago suburbs was about $1300/mo for a 2BR in 2015.
Current place in the couve is ~$1250/mo for a 2BR.

Prices here go up about 5% every year, so betting next time I need to re-up the lease it'll be equal.

No there isn't. Vacancy rates are still low.

Up zoning a lot of land and then letting the "market" dictate the housing that gets built will not solve the problem. We need public control of what is built.
It will absolutely help solve the problem, although yes, if you really want truly affordable housing, including for the poor and working class in a major city, you're gonna need a lot of public housing.

DevNull posted:

There are a lot of "YIMBY" types that think we just need more market rate housing.
Broadly speaking, most YIMBYs just want a shitton more housing, and are relatively agnostic as to where it comes from. The focus on market rate housing is just because that's much more politically achievable than large amounts of public housing (which has gotten a poor reputation in the US, often for good reason).

Now, trying to get a lot of affordable housing for free from otherwise market-rate developments is dumb. It's an attempt to get something for nothing so that we can feel like we're trying and then blame those drat greedy developers when it inevitably fails to create a significant number of affordable units.

It's kind of like if the government tried to get public roads by letting companies make toll roads, and then demanding that a portion of each toll road be reserved for free access. No you idiots, just use taxes and make the housing yourselves, you'll never get as much as you need by twisting the arms of developers.

They are "mom and pop" landlords or something.

"I am no longer taking chances on marginally qualified applicants" because of the relocation law, says a landlord whose name I believe was Marie. "Before, I knew a third of people I took chances on I’d be giving them a no-cause. Since this went into effect I’ve been raising rents I wouldn’t normally raise."

Another woman named Estelle speaks of "stinker" tenants who create problems and need to be evicted. "Sometimes I get a stinker an it’s just time to move on."

Another woman who rents out a property says: "Why would I continue operating in an area where there are unnecessary risks piled on by local government? I’m beginning to think that I don't [want to]."

Meanwhile, tenant activists are playing "Landlord Excuse Bingo."

Remember how we thought the Democrats were going to cut the car tabs funding ST3 without finding another funding source? Don't worry, everybody, Jessyn Farrell (in retrospect, so loving glad I didn't vote for her for mayor) and the Democratic party have come through! They're going to use funding for homeless children and education to make up for a bunch of it!

Just look at that poor, working-class family with three $45,000 cars that has to pay $500 apiece for them! Can you imagine that you're just going along with your three 2012 Range Rovers (fully loaded) on your blue-collar salary, and the state just performs an act of financial murder on you like that? That poor, working-class family will have to declare bankruptcy!

My loving senator voted for this poo poo, the previous ST3 car tab fee bill, and the state records act exemption, and I'm sure my loving reps are going to vote for it, too (going three for three as well). What loving universe am I living in where Tim loving Sheldon does the right thing and the useless assholes representing me just fall in loving line with the Republicans? Somebody needs to explain to me why the gently caress I'm bothering to vote for Democrats.

Inslee seems keen on where the winds are blowing, but at the same time he didn't support $15 an hour statewide.

I still think he's a centrist, playing to the non-economic issues farther than most dems in an effort to stave off an actual socialist challenger come 2020.

I don't think there's enough momentum to get an actual legit socialist challenger to topple Inslee. I'm sure someone will make an effort but he will cruise in.

The bigger question would be when he steps down and does Bob Ferguson run in that instance.

Did you know that no national grocery chain in Oregon will sell NA beer to a minor despite the fact that the prohibition requires the drink to have half a percent ABV? It's almost like retailers place age restrictions on things all of the drat time and it only really matters when it's murder machines.

Nah. "Under 18" is an exception to the law. I'm guessing the state laws wrt alcohol also carve out exceptions, though I haven't looked. There's no exception for "we're not selling this 20 year old something he can legally buy at 18 because we really don't wanna"

I invite you to look because there aren't any carve-outs. Similarly, until the state stepped up a year or two ago and fixed it, there was technically no age restriction on vape products, but most of the big national retailers wouldn't sell them to minors anyway, because they didn't want the negative press.

I mean - let's be honest, age restrictions on guns are pointless fell good measures that accomplish nothing beyond some nice press. But the sudden outcry of "Oh my god, these businesses sometimes have stronger age restrictions than the state law requires" is really silly.
