OK this one might require an explanation. You see there was this video game called Splatoon. It became quite popular on the internet, do to it's fun, unique gameplay and cute anime squids. Like anything popular on the internet, it spawned memes. The most popular is probably Splat Tim

Splat Tim is obviously hilarious, no explanation needed.

Splatoon was not just popular on the internet, it was also a big commercial success, bigger than some established Nintendo series like The Metroid or Kirby. There was a sequel, Splatoon 2, which was even better and more successful than Splatoon.

Today Nintendo had one of their Direct Videos, which are promotional videos announcing and showing off their future products. Today's Direct spent some time on new content planned for Splatoon 2, followed by this video.
