Koalas March posted:They should invite Tim Wise to go there and hold a town hall or something. White people tend to take the privilege pill a lot easier if they hear another folksy white guy explaining it to them. You could say this about any privileged group, tbh, but as a White Person (tm), I’ve found that the best way to explain it is that white people are given the benefit of the doubt. I’ve also made headway with asking “if everything is equal now, would you be okay with being black instead of white? Would you be okay with your child dating a black person? Why/why not?” I mean, this assumes that they’re earnest and just ignorant, not hateful, but you aren’t going to change the hateful ones without far more patience than I have. I’m also not country/outlaw enough to reach those people, so it’s time wasted for me. People don’t understand that the only way -that I’ve found at least- to change minds is with earnest, individual conversations over a period of time. It’s not an overnight or even a quick thing.

It's silly as hell but too many people think it's real life. The first episode of the reboot season had a van of Muslims driving around Los Angeles murdering veterans, and the only way to catch them was to use a satellite system that recorded all people at all times. Left a real bad taste in my mouth and I didn't watch any past that.

I'm a teacher (well student teaching) and our walkout today was cancelled because someone made a vague "we're gonna shoot the place up" threat that was later discredited. Instead, the students broadcasted live from the auditorium to every TV in every classroom and gave some moving speeches. About 60 students walked out anyway and had prayers and 17 minutes of silence on the football field, which caused some panic among the police that were out there monitoring. i've never been so proud to be a part of a movement, and it was really something to see students rise to the moment and totally own it. I don't know if I would have had the stones to do something like this when I was their age. Here's hoping they don't lose that energy as they get older

Vladimir Putin posted:Nobody loving remembers the 70’s when we had to fight off inflation and the interest rate to buy a house was like loving 20%? Yeah sure I’d like to relive those days of clinical depression on a national scale. Inflation in the 70's were super weird. Prices rise so employees push for raises. Raises put more money into the economy, devaluing the currency, and rising prices more. That's pretty standard boilerplate for how to gently caress up your monetary policy a la Venezuela. The Fed finally did the right thing and stopped printing more money and...well, inflation continued unchecked. People were so used to prices going up the cycle continued even without more currency being printed. Ends up inflation is as much perception as reality. Fast forward to 2010 and the government is dumping trillions of dollars into the economy and we should be seeing inflation, but we're barely staving off deflation. In part because there was no expectation of inflation. There are other factors too. Interest rates were so high in the 70's and 80's that banks created a lot of new money without needing the Fed.. A lot of those bailouts in 2008/2009 also got absorbed by banks because of all their terrible loan losses. But perception has an outsized impact. As for 20% interest rates, I don't know how much that actually hurt the housing market since higher interest rates push home prices lower. If interest rates were 10% today, people in Colorado wouldn't be selling bland homes for $500k. Adjusted for inflation you may end up paying the same thing for a home in 1979 as you would in 2018. It probably forced people to look at smaller homes and maybe pushed more towards renting, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
