I tend to like troop models best for any army and seeing them take basic dudes but give them a ton of personality is great.

Handsome, sophisticated space elves.
Having identified some potential tactical relevance has persuaded me to finally getting around to painting the bonesinger I ordered 5 months ago in the heady rush of all the Eldar stuff coming out. It’s such a cool model and not being able to do it justice was one of the things that’s been causing me to out it off, but I have finally bitten the bullet and done it. I have even tried these strange new witchcrafts I have gradually been learning like WASHES and EDGE HIGHLIGHTING and NOT BEING IRREDEEMABLY TERRIBLE AT THIS ANY MORE:

Seriously, one of the nice side effects of going to an event at the weekend was that multiple people stopped to compliment how cool my army looked on the table, which is very edifying for someone who developed a crippling self doubt about their painting ability as a younger player. Even a year ago I would have listed “I can never paint anything good” as a reason not to get back into this game, so good job citadel paint system, with your alchemical witchcraft (and the SA thread for providing a nice positive space to post models in).

On the one hand, agreed the cardboard mats aren't as nice as the moulded boards or the textile mats they seem to have discontinued. On the other, holy poo poo a version of the Cities of Death board where every other dice roll isn't gonna get stuck in the gutters.

Prospect of EZ-build troop options for most armies via Kill Team aside, I’m actually hoping the Kill Team sprues are more like Necromunda sprues, presenting more dynamically posed and more customizable versions of existing army troop options. Ideally, at least semi-intercompatible with 40k plastics, so one might field existing 40k plastic kill teams for factions who haven’t gotten custom KT plastics yet, then turn around and loot the KT plastics to make a more visually varied 40k army.

Fallen Rib
Welp, got absolutely trounced by the Custodes:

– Swarmlord died to overwatch charging a Landraider turn 1. Landraider was under a reroll 1 aura and used the strategem that allows you to overwatch on 5s. Absolutely brutal. Did 17 damage, I made 5 of the feel no pains from Catalyst. Dead Swarmlord. According to the maths, this should have done 1.21 damage. Whoever here told me to watch out for that gets a gold star.
– Flyrant got minced by 3 Custodians with axes on his first turn that got teleported in from a Strategem; didn't make a single 4++ and he did exactly 12 damage, killing it.
– In about 200/250 Genestealer attacks made over the course of the game I think I made about 5 or 6 rends?
– We played the mission where each player starts on the board with 3 objectives and you have to burn the other player's objective by holding it till the end of the turn with objective secured. Guess what entire army has objective secured and is great at defending objectives?
– The Twist also gave +2" to movement and +1" to advance rolls, making his dudes much faster.
– AcidFex did great work. I forgot to fire the stinger salvos though.
– Was able to use the Swarmlord + Spore Mines gut punch once to nearly kill the landraider. It did pretty well and I think I'll try it again when I'm having better luck.

My takeaways:

– Charge poo poo units in to Landraiders if you can
– If you're fighting Custodes, keep a loving wide distance between your units and theirs.
– Extended Carapace Stealers seem kind of useless
– Not really much I could have done better. The scenario strongly favoured him and my luck was poo poo.

The key to beating Custodes is to deny their strengths and tarpit, tarpit, tarpit!

Your big killy units need to be screened by your smaller gribbleys, if custodes get a charge in, they are dead.

Weight of attacks or shots is the best way to beat them, it sounds like you had horrible rolls especially with your rends.

If you can, be the one to charge him and if you can, back it up with a chaff unit. If it means getting a unit of stealers or guants decimated, it's worth it to allow your carnifex/tyrant to get in and murder.

Again, custodes will murder you, but they suffer with each unit or model lost. Focus fire and weight of fire/attacks/smite is key.

I was doing my best to screen the entire game. Tyrannofex, the Biovores and Neurothropes made it to the end. The one thing I didn't screen was the Hive Tyrant and boy howdy did I get punished for it.

I feel like I went in with a strong list and just got super-duper unlucky. That's life I guess.

Also Custodes seems to me to be a genuine use-case for a double Tervigon + 60 termagants. Though for each Tervigon you could get another 50 gaunts.

I probably needed more units on the board. 30 Gaunts + 32 Stealers was not enough.

It does sound like bad luck.

What I found with Custodes is that they are killable (even the biker captain version), but they will murder gently caress your skull if you let them.

Bigger version of spore mines are good for the extra mortal wounds, useful for bringing down custodes.

Maybe if I'm busy it could keep me from you

My gaming group is getting a bit burnt out with the silliness and ludicrous sized armies of 8th, and I thought it would be fun to go back and play an earlier edition, specifically 4th. It's the edition we all started (some played a tiny amount of 3rd), and it would be fun to re-live the era of non-random charges, no overwatch, templates, and very customizable unit selection.

Now my question is, assuming it's not stepping into :filez: territory, does anyone have a good resource for downloading all of the older codexes from 3rd/4th? My group owns most of them, but we aren't sure where some of them are. It's been over a decade since they've been touched, and its not like we can just go out and buy new ones.

"Customize your team" and a heading in the video rulebook titled "Choosing Specialists" makes me feel pretty safe on that front.

EDIT: there's also a section on the scenario page shown that says "Each player chooses a faction keyword, and the players reveal their choices at the same time. Then each player chooses a battle-forged Kill Team (see page 62) that only includes models with the Faction keyword that they chose."
