I'm surprised too. I don't know what you mean about the bible literalist thing, I haven't heard anything about that before.

When Brad sent out the first call for free labor to work on Pantheon, the writing team consisted of some chick known for nothing more than a bunch of bible themed young adult novels or some poo poo.

I totally forgot about this launching, despite looking at this very thread saying this very thing not a week ago. A sad tale indeed. What irritated me most wasn't the actual game. It's the very first video on the steam store page. Worst voice over I have ever experienced in media. Even if I didn't know what I do about this lump of poo poo, that video would be enough to make me pass on this game.

Still the top review on steam:

Steam posted:

It is very very sad, but it appears as if Richard Garriott, a man I held in very high regard for creating half a dozen excellent role playing games and Ultima Online, has gone the way of the Molyneux.

This game is insanely bad. It's "incomplete because it is in early access", as the developers claim, but that's not why it's terrible. Some of the basic design ideas are interesting (I like level-less systems, and a lot of world interaction), as was expected, but everything else is just sad. Game design, art direction, execution: pretty much everything in this game is a spectacular failure that has no hope of being fixed at any point.

Occasionally, you'll be able to see another player, grinding away. Grinding is the only thing you can do. Almost every quest I tried (there aren't many) is badly written, boring, annoying, AND broken beyond any reasonable measure for early access. The quest log is a very bad joke. The whole UI looks like they hired the most unqualified person to design it. It all feels sterile, empty, life- and loveless, outdated by decades, clunky and janky. If all that is because it's in early access, they apparently haven't gone past the prototyping phase. The progress they make is snail-paced, and according to the change logs, often in the wrong direction.

After underwhelming in every respect, it then gives you the feeling that the only content - besides the insanely steep and grindy core loop - is gated off with crazy whalehunting prices in the P2W shop. Which this game shouldn't have, because it's about 80% overpriced. It also appears that the community is toxic as hell, and the developer interaction catastrophic. Even some of the prominent white knights are jumping ship at this point.

This is made by one of those development teams who are so deluded about the state of their game that they need to clamp down hard on any kind of critique to preserve the consistency of their world view. It's either that, or simple dishonesty.

Remember the name Portalarium and stay VERY far away.

Sorry if this is a bit convoluted. The game sucked all motivation out of me to put more effort into this review.

For being a space king, I would think Dick British would have a better cosplay outfit. (Or at least more than one.) Then again, all it takes for some whales to make it rain is spotting their idol in that same old getup. As an embarrassingly big Ultima fan, seeing him in that stupid outfit makes me sad as hell.

Steamdb says 162 online and 227 is the peak int he last 24 hours, which seems pretty grim for an MMO's launch day.

the top reason I hate this title is because now Lum the mad hates us because of it, like we're to blame, we the SA users and not the reddit users etc.

I mean I always wanted to know how richard garriott dick and cum taste like, ever since the early ultima days, and now Lum gets to suck old garriotts dick for a living and when he's called out for it in sincerity out of 100% genuine interest on how good/bad the balls and cum of richard garriot smell and taste, he dislikes being asked about it and openly proclaims that he hates us!!!

there is no consolation at this point, not even in the form of a $700 air balloon

So did this thing actually launch? If so its had absolutely no marketing. I dont think Ive seen a single ad or any other form of promotion for it. Im honestly not certain if that video from the "launch party" isnt actually the intro of some kind of bizzare porn being pawned off as related to the game by a cruel prankster.

First I heard of it was seeing it today at the SXSW gaming expo, with the booth manned by none other than Lord British himself. It was cool to meet him, none of my friends had any idea who he was.

Sad to hear the new game is not that good, when he explained it was basically Ultima Online 2 I was excited, but man these steam reviews are not pleasant.

It is totally Ultima Online 2 in these ways:

You can buy $30,000 in-game properties with real life money up front
You can buy emojis that let your character smoke a pipe or go in a hot tub that you also had to buy with real life money
You can't ride a horse but everyone gets "coconuts" that let you hear a horsey riding sound when you run
PVP is flagged only in the few zones that are pvp
People have wings, outhouses, floating airships and various steampunk accessories they bought with real money
Mining and harvesting nodes are scattered around hard to find

I don’t think he’s a bad guy, I just recognize that “The spiritual successor to Ultima Online” is never going to be good, because part of what made UO good was the year it was released and the competition it faced (none). The market has moved on.

IncredibleIgloo
Feb 17, 2011

A lot of what made UO interesting was the choices that needed to be made in game design. Instead of designing one game for one player, or a team game for two groups of players, it was totally different. Design choices needed to make it fun for one person, but without that fun compromising the thousands of other players. I think they got a lot of it wrong, too. It was very formative and paved the way forward for games to come. But it was never a particularly good game, although fun could be had playing it.

Ultima Online was a terrible game but I have to give it credit for paving the way for the MMORPG genre. Plenty more really bad MMORPGs would come after it (read: all of them).
