Some anime animators are actual full time hires at various studios, but a lot are freelancers that get paid by the frame, and the rates can be pretty dire. Getting 500 yen per frame on an order for 30 frames with nothing else coming in that week is not a very good situation to be in. (note these numbers are made up to illustrate the point, actual rates and frequency of work varies wildly)

So the whole movie is about Chief unknowingly going on a journey to find himself.

Peter Rabbit was an absolute shitheap, especially in a post-Paddington universe. It actually had some stuff I liked in there though. I really enjoyed everything involving both of the McGregors. Young McGregor was a shockingly well conceived character. Peter himself actually developed in ways I wouldn't have expected too. Essentially I got the impression that someone had a decent script - or at least a solid vision - for a Beatrix Potter movie, and made the awful mistake of pitching it to Sony Animation, who proceeded to stuff it with inappropriate dated pop music, "attitude" and winks. And James Corden.

I should have pushed James Cordon off that bridge when I had the chance.[1] [1] I once saw him leaning on Hungerford Bridge in London late at night. I could have pushed him over into the Thames and no one would have been any the wiser.

It saddens me that the script people at Sony seem to have such bad taste when they have such a badass animation studio that can run the gamut from Cloudy to Spiderman Spiderverse to composited creature VFX.

I'm still in a wait and see mode for both of those. I'm more optimistic about Mario. Miyamoto spent a year shooting the poo poo with the Illumination guy, so I doubt that they're just going to reskin Minions into Toads.

Toads are usually so inoffensive and bland that I'm not even sure how you could minion-ize them without making them feel like a completely different species. That's sorta a part of the whole Mario series, though; the mainline games tend to focus entirely on being fun and charming, with nearly no outright jokes outside of the occasional goofy enemy design. While those games made me happy constantly, they didn't really make me laugh very much, and I can't imagine Illumination giving us a movie without a ton of jokes. That said, Odyssey kinda changed all that. Mario finally got some cartoony and funny animations, and the game is really goofy overall, so there's clearly some potential there.

You don't need to change them visually edit: Until we see something from the movie I have absolutely zero faith in Illumination making it good. I'm not saying they WON'T do that, I'm just saying it'd be absurdly offputting and I can't imagine Nintendo would be okay with mutating the pure and innocent Captain Toad into a rude, gibbering jokeboy. the correct answer is to reverse the roles of the lead and the cute little thing that there are a millions of. Give the Toads their own voices and personalities (ala the Smurfs, which is a much better comparison right down to the goofy hats) and have Mario be the silent character who gets laughs via physical comedy. If you put in him scenes with the Toads as well as Luigi and Peach, the fact that he doesn't talk would be less of an issue.

The Sonic games have all had him interacting with pretty realistically modeled humans though. Eggman is like the one cartoony looking human character in that franchise. I can't really figure out how the Sonic world is supposed to work. In some of the TV shows he comes from an alternate reality to the regular human world which they could do in the movie. In others he just seem to exist alongside regular humans and gets kissed by one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk6cgp7RcL8 Ccs fucked around with this message at 04:32 on Mar 23, 2018 |

The setting's traditionally been a total mess, yes. The setting is basically totally different across every single separate Sonic game/comic/TV show, and sometimes between the US and Japan, too. I believe Sonic Forces marked the Sonic world becoming officially animal-person-only except for Eggman, and Sega is supposedly having enough creative control over the new comic to keep it from become the mess it did at Archie.

In the games at least I believe they've always taken place on an alternate Earth (as even some of the areas from the early games such as South Island and Angel Island are based off real world locations). Outside of a few US manuals the planet Mobius never existed in the games and came from a misunderstanding of something Yuji Naka said in an early interview regarding Sonic 2 (he referred to the zones as "Mobius Worlds", probably referencing the corkscrews you travel on in stages like Emerald Hill and Chemical Plant). But yeah, as has been mentioned pretty much every incarnation of Sonic (including the two Japan-produced anime) does something different with the setting and are all completely unrelated to each other aside from some familiar characters/locations.

You're correct in that "Mobius" wasn't really a thing outside of the Sonic CD manual (which referred to Amy Rose as "Princess Sally", who was already established as a separate character at this point, so it can safely be disregarded) or Spinball and Mean Bean Machine (which were cartoon tie-ins to begin with and thus aren't really in the same universe). That said, I don't believe it was due to a mistranslation of something Naka said; there were internal documents at Sega of America around 1991 that mention "Mobius" by name. That stuff just didn't make it to the manuals for some reason. Which is just as well, since Sonic Adventure 2 then came out and retconned everything as "Earth". Nowadays they just sidestep it entirely and call it "the planet", "the world" or "Sonic's world". Not helping matters is that apparently the internal documentation at Sega says the current games take place on two worlds - one all-animal, one wot has humans on it - without anything in-game to actually corroborate this beyond "man, they are woefully inconsistent on whether Sonic's world has humans or not". They're also really bad about time travel and alternate dimensions being interchangable. Like, Blaze was from an alternate dimension in Rush, but then she's from THE FUTURE! in 2006 (though it's implied she winds up in an alternate dimension at the end of Silver's story, I think?); likewise, Classic Sonic was from the past in Generations, only to suddenly be considered as from an alternate dimension in Forces/Mania (even though it's still implied that he's the same Sonic as Modern but younger, which begs the question of why they changed his origin from "the past" to "an alternate dimension" to begin with). Really, the film being a pile of poo poo may be certain with Sony Animation involved, but it's not like the games were exactly gold-standard writing either with all this crap going on.

# ? Mar 23, 2018 18:04 |

The thing about Blaze in 2006 is that I believe 2006 was intended to be like a soft reboot of sorts, which also explains Eggman's design. As you can tell, this didn't work out.

I remember a comic in Disney Adventures magazine from when I was like 7 years old that had Sonic meet a friendly scientist named Dr. Kintobor who wanted to help research his speed, and then he spilled soda on the treadmill attached to a supercomputer, and it hosed Kintobor up and reversed his name and turned him into the evil Dr. Robotnik This is still canon to me

Where did the name Robotnik originate anyway? Was it from that one promo comic or some internal documents at Sega? Of course it doesn't matter since both names are now equally canon as of Sonic Adventure 2 (his grandfather is referred to as Gerald Robotnik in both the Japanese and English versions of the game). I don't really mind the name Eggman as much as some though as the Sonic series kind of has a habit of using names for their characters that also describe their appearance/gimmick (Eggman because he's shaped like an egg, Sonic because he runs fast, Tails because he's got two of them, etc). But yeah, the games can't even stay consistent with themselves half the time (the example of Classic Sonic in Forces actually contradicts itself in the same scene as Tails recognizes Chaos from Sonic Adventure, a game that heavily references Sonic 3. The characters also talk about the Death Egg as if they've encountered it before) so whatever they do in the upcoming movie is just going to be par for the course (no guarantee it'll be good of course). I think the same internal document renames Eggman to Robotnik, probably because Sega of America feared the jolly, goofy mad scientist with an entire factory city polluting the place and an army of robots to his name wouldn't come off as a threat with a name like "Eggman". Also, maybe they wanted to evoke a bit of lingering Cold War sentiment, with the vaguely Slavic "-nik" suffix. I always thought it weird that the snow stage in Sonic Triple Trouble is "Robotnik Winter Zone". Even in the Japanese version Sonic & Tails 2, they kept it as-is instead of naming it "Eggman Winter Zone" or something.
