Its so as oil becomes less valuable, the climate heats up, and things inevitably head south in SA, he can just cuts his losses, drop the King gig, and hop on a plan to New York. The inevitable end of SA is probably going to involve people getting religious and crazy, as people do in a societal collapse, and he'll get to be the Noble Failure Progressive Reformer that gets welcomed at all the right dinner parties (instead of just being some rich despot that fled a revolution).

The big organized mass rally that made news everywhere is done, but there's still protests all over the country from the same groups of people. White Wednesday's and the compulsory hijab protests are still going on, with one of the key figures from the large protest just getting sentenced to some absurd sentence for taking off her hijab and waving it around. There's been some big strikes in recent weeks as well, coming from these same demographics that were at the center of the big protest a while back, so it's a largely overlapping group. A lot of government employees who haven't been getting paid and blame corruption for it. The same dynamics are all still there, but things are relatively calm for the moment.

I do think Trump has reason to be annoyed that without his oversight people in his administration, some of whom he's since fired, tried to turn the war on ISIS into a permanent occupation to deny resources to the Syrian government. That said, it's his own fault for not taking an interest before now, and dramatic shifts in policy are bad even if the original policy was also a bigger commitment than he wanted. If we do draw down from our current presence in Syria, doing so in an orderly manner that involves coordination with the relevant stakeholders is a hell of a lot better than just suddenly announcing that we're out and creating the worst possible environment for future status negotiations, particularly with regard to any guarantees we might secure for the future safety of the groups that fought for us. Now they're left wondering if they need to scramble and see what they can get from the highest bidder without our assistance (though the YPG in particular doesn't really have a lot of options to choose from since Turkey is so clearly not an option).
