To put the wayback machine a little bit, people in their late-20s/earlyish-30s spent their 8-18yo years in what? That window of about 1997-2004 or so? So, you would have maybe had South Park, anime and Adult Swim content out there that would be more appealing to that same demographic with little competition in their timeslots. Simpsons I thought had some counterprogramming competition around 15 years ago, too. If the parents were in control of the TV on Sunday nights, in the era of pretty much if you missed it on first run, you'd probably not see it again until reruns or if you were curious enough to pick up the DVDs, there was other stuff on that you were being told that was going to get watched, instead. I seemed to recall posting about something similar in this window a while back and found that post: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3808768&pagenumber=11&perpage=40#post469206506 JediTalentAgent fucked around with this message at 09:04 on Mar 26, 2018 |

The Simpsons was being heavily syndicated as early as 1995 on local Fox stations. That’s when, at 10 years old, I started getting into it. Before then, my parents didn’t like us watching it but never outright forbade it. Once it hit syndication I think all the outrage over it died out for most people.

Looking back at the Simpsons and South Park both of them have a clear moment where the creators told the audience they were done trying and it was just gonna be the established formula forever. In the Simpson's it was the Tamzarian episode. South Park had the You're Getting Old two parter. Now you have predictive texts writing better Simpsons pitches than actual episodes and the last time I watched South Park it was a Black Friday episode that literally ends with a commercial for the Stick of Truth.

Several of my friends including the woman I'm seeing right now all had parents that wouldn't allow them to watch The Simpsons lol.. It's really sad actually because they see all the memes and .. nothing registers. saddest thing i'd ever saw... My folks were a lot more lenient. aka my dad taped the original Hanky the Christmas Poo episode of South Park -- I was confused when he excitedly told me about it and didn't know what he was talking about until we watched it we laughed until we cried. good memory.

You could catch the Simpsons four times a night for awhile in the mid 90s in weekday syndication. Then a new episode on Sunday nights. I was always bummed that it wasn't on on Saturdays.

Stick of Truth would've been so much better if the plot wasn't just a collection of references to all their famous episodes.

Apparently there’s a new lovely flashback episode that people are mad about. I’m starting to think that they’re pulling stuff like this and gimmick sequel episodes just to get people talking online.

I had that season downloaded as an insomnia remedy. The gag is that Homer and Marge are curling in the Olympics and you think "broomwork" is a reference to that. The only reason I bring it up is that the joke is even in universe nobody watches the Simpsons anymore.

Caught up on the last couple weeks. Flashback episode where Homer and Marge lived in Capitol City along with every secondary character for some reason. Baby Bart cost Homer a job where he had a piece of a tooth whitening strip company that was destined to make billions, and then he cost Marge her job as a nightlife reporter. It was pretty bland, but it did have a Bill Plympton couch gag that I guess was interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEuT9sePcI4 It seems like they learned not to put a year on the flashback episodes, but the episode did look like a late 2000s pastiche. Also, Marge was impregnated by a homer sperm wearing a sweater, glasses and playing the saxophone. The next one Skinner retires. Ralph does a rap song. I dunno somehow the episode was about creepy clown sightings. Bart goes to rehab for pranks. For some reason, Ranier Wolfcastle is doing community theater. It sucked.

One of the things I hate most about the recent seasons is that they do these flashback episodes where everyone is the same age. What kind of town is populated almost entirely by people in their late 30's with a tiny sprinkling of old people/kids?? It's unnatural and creepy!

It's kind of weird how early on Barney was clearly Homer's best friend and eventually they just started moving away from that into even removing him from flashback episodes and now young Homer is constantly hanging out with Lenny and Karl instead.
