War. And lots of it.

Due to death, Takae Shimamura was promoted to the top brass of the navy. He takes over for the Imperial Fleet based in the Suez. He and Bukkoro Iwata sit together at the newly opened canal bar and talk shop. Iwata is Shimamura's senior, and the fleet with follow the JSNF, not the other way around. Shimamura begrudgingly agrees, as he yields to authority. During their talk, they receive a letter stamped OF UTMOST URGENCY: SUEZ COMMAND. They open it. It reveals that General Nozomashikunai Kamonohashi has been declared dead after a small skirmish with rebels in Borneo. This message was delivered by text rather than letter for reasons unknown like steam eating my screenshots as per usual. Iwata and Shimamura take a brief pause to ponder. Was Kamonohashi murdered? He would never sit close to the frontlines. They didn't dare ask anybody.

With the ending of the Chinese crisis, and Egypt comfortably in our sphere and not under threat from foreign powers, we decided to accept their proposal to an alliance. Any western intervention in Egypt would be very dangerous to the Suez canal, and Egypt staying their own masters while we control things behind the scene is the best case. When Egyptians shed blood, it will hopefully be to keep enemy forces away from the Suez. Attempts to sphere and court Australia and New Zealand result in our embassies being immediately banned by the United Kingdom.

All over Borneo, we begin to discover this new "oil" its energy properties were previously unknown to us, but scientific advances reveal that this "oil" has properties that allow for both the lubrication of surfaces, but to produce tremendous amounts of energy when detonated, hopefully providing even more energy than steam power. Global traders demand high sums for the black stuff, and we happily oblige while filling our wallets.

As people from Malaysia begin to walk, talk, and act Japanese, a growing movement recognizes that Malaysia is simply a long lost brother from Japan. Over the course of the next decade, official reports place that Johore is officially a part of Japan, and no longer a prefecture with a troubled history. It seems 40 years after the spilling of blood, we can all come to an agreement.

Although the automobile has yet to be invented...this has great uses for new ships.

Colonial friction continues in Borneo. A Japanese border guard was "interned" or more likely, kidnapped by Dutch authorities. Although the Dutch have had control over the majority of the island for far longer, Japan is both geographically closer and has done far more for the people of Borneo than the Dutch ever had. The factories that employ native labor provide for a growing market of Malaysian and Yue traders. Borneo will be ours. Perhaps if the Spanish are dragged into this war we can take the Philippines and Borneo in one fell swoop.

Urgently, Iwata and Shimamura make their way to the docks, the JSNF and Imperial Fleet make haste away from the Suez as fast as possible. They will be responsible for landings in the Philippines should Spain dare to join the war.

Spain likes us the least out of any country. Even with our constant battles with the Netherlands, they still respect us. Their alliance with Scandinavia is troubling, but I can guarantee that Scandinavia likes us more, and will not take a side in this conflict. Although a Scandinavian landing in Iberia would be welcome. Other countries are too busy in Europe to bother with our squabbles.

As we prepare for war, tragically, General Hikaru dies. Hikaru was supposed to be prepared to ship out at first opportunity to support Japanese landings in Borneo. Upon Hikaru's death, an official autopsy reveals some troubling facts about the general...but regardless, they are buried with full honors. We should have known that mustache was a fake.

General's Mojojojo and Iwata prepare for landings in the Philippines. They will quickly occupy, surround, and destroy the rather large Spanish garrison (it seems they have learned from the last war). The fleets will prevent Spanish reinforcement.

War begins, and through an arcane sequence of events, almost all of Europe intervenes on the Dutch behalf, including powers like France and Austria. Immediately, the war plan shifts. Russia has been a wounded bear in a state of civil war for almost twenty years, but the motherland has recovered, and she is very angry. Troops meant to guard Manchuria from Chinese aggression are immediately called north. Jules Brunet leads the charge into Siberia. South Africa and Egypt do not join the war, as they planned. The introduction of the French is too worrying for them. Some allies. Scandinavia declares neutrality as we hoped.

Pictured is the Japanese war plan in Siberia. It is simple, smash and grab close to the Chinese border, then dig in in the mountains to prevent Russian counterattack.

Although we expected a short war, adequate to be dealt with by our professional forces, the situation has changed with the entry of France and Russia into the war. Various farmers and laborers are called into war. The Emperor begins a recruitment drive all over Japan to bolster the ranks of highly trained professional soldiers as well.

As our troops prepare in the Philippines, bore through Borneo, and rush into Russia, China, realizing that we may have bit off more than we can chew at the present moment, declares war on us. An immediate general staff call is issued for troops entering Russia to retreat.

Not viewing the war in China as an extension of the war between the Dutch and Japan, the joint Scandinavian government votes 3/3 to send naval assistance to Japan. Oslo was the hardest to convince, but stating that China retaking Manchuria could be a net negative towards shipping in the Pacific, the Norwegian parliament agreed. (I imagine a united Scandinavia, especially one that was not founded through war with HM's Government to be essentially a functional Kalmar union)

Egypt offers us an alliance again. As long as this war is active, the Emperor refuses to work with Egypt, aware that his policy could put the Sinai at risk, he views the Egyptians as backstabbers.

As Mindoro is surrounded, Iwata and Mojojojo's troops move in for the kill. Due to exceedingly poor breaks in the chain of command, difficulty for the naval and army forces to communicate, and rather poor leadership under Mojojojo, Mindoro is taken at extreme loss of life. Although the large amounts of troops poured into the battle definitely caused a breakdown in communication. This part was on the Emperor, for which he apologized. Reports of survivors are erroneous. The Spanish were unable to retreat.

Siam allows the troops of Dai Viet through, who begin occupying Johore. As the army that was originally in charge of garrisoning Johore was destroyed in the previous uprising, and the unit bound for Singapore was diverted to Korea, Johore is surrendered as a lost cause. Upon conclusion of the war, the Emperor is heavily considering punishing Siam. The navy of Scandinavia arrived shortly after and destroyed the Chinese fleet pictured.

Two recent technological advancements have allowed for the production of a new ship known as the battleship. It is massive, has large guns, and that is all the Emperor wants to hear. He puts down three orders, although due to fuel shortages they are not expected to be battle ready anytime soon, they could turn the battle if so.

Withdrawing to the Yalu line of fortresses, an ill guided Chinese attack on fortifications in Kimchaek results in severe casualties. The Qing government is severely embarrassed, and already begins to start losing the will to fight. Russian troops do not stream through Manchuria as the General's feared, as a large host of communist rebels have risen in the Urals and have forced the Russian army to bog down.

Jules Brunet's army of the interior provides another killing blow at the Yalu line. For being a hired gun, he has turned out to be one of the best investments in the Japanese military. Brunet breaking the Chinese assault has allowed Japanese forces to roll the forces back in towards China.

These successes continue so many times at the Yalu, that the Chinese government's will is essentially broken. Chinese troops begin to flee back over the Manchuria-China line, and Japanese troops press up through Manchuria, retaking lost territory. The warscore is now -15% in favor of Japan.

A Dutch naval force runs through the picket line formed by the Emperor's Flotilla and the Imperial Navy, and drops off a rather large contingent of troops on Kyushu. The Japanese army is not stupid. They kept an extremely large amount of conscripts back from the front to deal with threats like this, and it is about to pay dividends.

A quick attack attempting to keep the Dutch in place so they could not flee back to their boats, works at a horrific loss of Japanese troops, the Dutch army is soon run down and destroyed, with the Emperor issuing a no prisoners order.

The most decisive battle of the war. The Japanese army completely smashes the armies of Guangxi and China. Surrender is imminent. The warscore is pushed to -32%, and the Japanese government agrees that a punitive action must be held against China.

Note: Kimchaek is an anachronism. The name of the city should be Sŏngjin.

A wargoal is added to tale the rich coastal province of Zhejiang. This will further divide China.

We catch the Dutch navy attempting to rescue its trapped comrades in Kyushu. Not going to happen.

In the Borneo theater, a rather large French force, fresh off of the defeats in Europe, lands in Borneo, they hit the Brunei Gendarmie unit, of Shirakawa's pride before his death, and destroy it. The Emperor's Guard unit prepares for a large fight.

As the Scandinavian navy sinks another Chinese flotilla containing many fresh combat forces meant to land in Borneo, the forces move from Korea to Manchuria and press the attack. Two more spectacular battles later, and the Chinese army is completely finished as a fighting force. We demand their surrender. As we demand their surrender, the United Kingdom joins the war.

The Chinese, with nothing left to fight for and Japanese troops beginning to enter Chinese territory, agree to surrender.

As another light Austrian force attempts to invade Japan, the Chinese ambassador to Edo agrees to a surrender. The hundreds of thousands of troops committed to the Chinese theater are immediately ordered south to smash the western allies. Brunet's army of the interior is sent north, as Russian troops begin to arrive.

While transiting the mountains, the army of the interior is caught in an ambush, it managed to retreat but General Brunet is killed in the chaos. On that same day, the large French and Austrian force that landed in Borneo is completely obliterated. The only men to retreat, a 2,000 strong unit, are deliberately surrounded by Mojojojo and Iwata's troops. They immediately surrender.

Our severely battered reformed police forces are caught in an ambush by Malaysian Anarcho-Liberals. They are smashed with extreme prejudice. As we dealt with the French in the south, the United Kingdom, who earlier had intervened hoping for the status quo on behalf of their friend, the Netherlands, lands in the north in an attempt to relieve the French. The police force, upon defeating the rebels, agrees to sacrifice themselves to the landing British units. The British are about thirty days too late, and a Japanese force almost twice the size is heading straight for their location.

The British relief force is completely wiped out by General Mojojojo's Emperor's Guards. As the JSNF go to work on occupying the rest of Borneo, the massive defeat of the British, results in a heavy swing in opinion at home. Many British citizens protest the intervention in the war, and the lost of their brothers, sons, husbands and fathers over an island in the Pacific ocean.

Over the course of the action in Borneo, the French conduct a smaller landing in Johore and capture it. Although unfortunate, the navy patrols did not catch this in time. Johore is a tertiary objective though, and as Borneo remains under Japanese control, the Dutch and British will to fight for it begins to wane. In Yomi/Australia, the British do not move, as defense has been turned over to the Australians for the most part.

A few months pass, and the British surrender control of Borneo to Japan. What was meant to be a small colonial border war resulted in Japan having to fight off multiple great powers. The Emperor is proud of his victory, but knows that had his forces in Manchuria not been able to outrun Chinese forces and make it back to Korea, or had the Scandinavians not destroyed the Chinese navy that was bearing down on Borneo while troops were out of position, it could have just as easily been all over.

At long last, the Emperor orders his troops to stand down, and for the professional army to take the lead again. Those who return home come back changed men, and although many have suffered the horror of war, jingoism continues to rise in Japan.

Once again, the war was extremely hard on the Japanese economy. Even two more months of war could have possibly bankrupted the whole country. However, as men returned home from war, the economy suffered a massive boom as investments by Japanese businessmen skyrocketed. All would not be lost for the Japanese economy. All over Johore, precious rubber is found. This is demanded by many different industries, and with Japan in control of some of the few reserves of these trees in the world, the Japanese economy begins to receive an absolute postwar boom.

After a fiery socialist drives party support for the party through the roof, an election is to be held soon. Japan's extremely pro-military culture could be disrupted by a victory at the hands of the socialists, but of course, the Emperor can always remove the party in power. Many soldiers returning from war adopt socialist attitudes.

In 1889, Japanese scientists invent the airplane! And people balked at the talk of flying machines, pshaw!

Persia, a westernized nation, requests an alliance with us. We happily agree, with approaches into the Ottoman middle east, southern Russia, and towards British India, they lie in a precarious position, but also have the immense ability to project power. A working relationship with an oil producer and aggressive power is also not something to complain about.

Although the socialists nearly take power, an effort to placate them by making voting equal for the middle and upper classes now takes effect.

As we look upon our empire and smile, a horrifying realization begins. China has westernized. The Emperor immediately begins work for preparing a punitive mission into China, but as he prepares to mobilize, two warlord states of China ask Japan for an alliance, despite hundreds of thousands of their soldiers dying at the hands of the Japanese less than three years ago.

Although controversial in the cabinet, the alliance now gives Japan access to the fourth and ninth strongest armies in the world. This will provide a nice bulwark against China, should they make moves to reclaim any of their lost territory. The alliance also allows the extreme amounts of troops in Manchuria to withdraw back to the mainland, and to other areas. Egypt also asks for an alliance again. Although they had essentially backstabbed us against our war in the west, this is essentially a non aggression pact, one we need while we are occupied with China.

However, the resting cannot occur until China is taken down a step further. The Emperor is paranoid of a backstab, and needs the warlord states to attack the Qing state in order to have a standing chance of taking down the Chinese. A full mobilization is ordered, much to the shock of the lower class, who had just finished exiting the army.

The Dutch, strangely after our last war, ask for an alliance. Despite our constant wars, relations with the Dutch have been decent considering the wars between. We accept the alliance on the grounds that it does give us an ally in Europe who can soak up some attention, as France, considered the number 1 country in the world, is now starting to get hyper aggressive.

As forces begin to move in, a third crisis starts over Korea. Japan cannot ever risk again a two way war involving the west on one side and China on the other, and begrudgingly agrees to hold off on attacking the Chinese, even though his forces were in position. A war against France will be fought almost entirely on Japanese soil, as strong marine landings in Africa were vetoed as far too risky for the Japanese to pull off. However, Iwata's JNSF immediately steamed towards the Sinai. His troops would either fight to the death to keep the waterway out of French hands, or, if the situation allowed, strike at French assets in Africa, and possibly even Europe. The alliance with the Dutch is looking very smart now. As the crisis looms, Prussia forms Germany, and Two Sicillies forms Italy. Scandinavia, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom oppose France and Austria Hungary in this crisis.

Thus, on April 28, 1894, The First World War begins.

France and Austria Hungary
vs.
Japan, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, South Africa, Egypt, the Netherlands, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Persia

WE NEED LEADERS

The army has now been formed into a very cohesive fighting force as we prepare for war all over the globe.

Army units

Manchu Rapid Intervention Force-Yamagata Akihiro The MRIF is the same as it was under General Hikaru's leadership. Meant for speedy intervention in China or Russia, should the situation arise. This unit will not leave the Asian theater of operations. Hikaru gets first dibs.

Japanese Intervention Army-Rudogawa Oodoman The JIA is a bit of a misnomer, it is a small force meant for picking off islands as the elite JSNF and SFI are elsewhere.

Japanese Army of China-Berisariusu Furabiusu The JAoC is based out of our newly conquered area in coastal China. This is the heavier Japanese contingent in coastal China, meant for launching the counterattack should China attempt to intervene.

Okinawa Garrison- Self-explanatory. A very small unit to prevent from someone island hoping. Also serves as a look out for naval units. Will never leave Okinawa.

Yomi Defense Force-Ikasu Hito As the United Kingdom is on our side in this war, threats to the colony of Yomi are extremely low. They are earmarked for deployment in Africa or the Suez as they have been deployed in the desert.

Special Force Ichi- An extremely small unit of guards that will be set to do hit and run tactics on French and Austrian positions. Not built for a standup fight, this unit will be tasked with drawing away troops from the main battle.

Emperor's Guard-Sebasu Mojojojo One of the most battle scarred units in the Imperial Japanese Army, the Emperor's Guard is under the keen eye of General Mojojojo. The EG is planned for home defense and shoring up defenses of our ally South Africa.

JEFIE-Kinzo Ushiromiya The Japanese Expeditionary Force in Europe. This unit will be sent to port in Copenhagen, Denmark, and join Scandinavian forces wherever they go. This will be our main unit in Europe until the situation changes elsewhere.

Chinese Defense Force- Made up of native Chinese citizens, this army is based out of a massive fort on the coast. Should China invade, their orders are to hold out as long as possible and then initiate a counter attack with the JAoC.

Central Honshu Garrison- An extremely large unit made up of laborers and farmers for the defense of Honshu, the middle island of Japan.

Farmer's Army- An extremely large unit made up entirely of farmers, numbering currently almost 300,000 soldiers, the FA will be split up eventually and sent to Europe, should losses in that theater mount. As we currently do not have the shipping capability, nor do we want the political damage of sending conscripts into battle.

Kuril Coastwatchers- A larger garrison, this unit is made up of the best conscripts available in the Kurile Islands. Should war begin with Russia, this unit will deploy into Siberia. Made up of Japanese and Ainu soldiers. This unit will also be sent to the Aleutians should war kick up between our allies and the USA.

North Honshu Garrison- Same as the CHG, also has responsibility for Hokkaido.

Home Guards- A large professional contingent to our conscript based home defense.

Army of the Rising Sun-Tariq al-Dhiib The AotRS is a large army meant to stay in Manchuria, similar to the MRIF. It's mission statement is a bit more flexible however.

It's very nice of the French to so willingly hand offer Madagascar to us like that with a convenient war. Who are we to refuse? Will work on a more suitable battle plan once am home for a more cohesive strategy.

You can set it up to capture screenshots in a bunch of different ways, save them all to a custom folder, and even do some light editing within the program itself. Also, stuff like batch conversions and edits is a life-saver for screenshot LPs.

Run Irfanview and hit "C", it will open the capture setup menu.

Capture area can be whatever you like, I tend to keep it to "Foreground Window - Client Area"

Capture method is whatever you bind it to. I have it set to "5" on my Numpad, so every time I hit 5, it takes a screenshot.

You can play around with the options on the right if you want to, but the last thing to configure is where/how you want to save the files. I keep the default name but pick a custom location. Choose "Save as - JPG" if you wanna go with Jpgs and then check the options for it on the right to at least bring up the quality to 100 (I think default is 80?)

Mercenary General Tariq al-Dhiib stands ready to lead the Army of the Rising Sun.

scavy131
Dec 21, 2017

Admiral Shimamura proposes the following plan for the Japanese Empire's offensive in this war.

In Summary, our most important interest is to properly cleanse our local regions from these far flung Frenchmen than it is to die on European soil. While the JEFIE will still go to Europe and aid our Scandinavian allies, my concern is the areas in between.

Due to the huge resolution of this map, I'll explain the five part plan.

1. All French Indian and Pacific Ocean territories are to be seized either by JIA or most local force, this is to be a combined Naval/Army effort. This portion of the campaign will not include Madagascar but will, provided the British do not seize it first, include the French possession of Pondicherry in India.

2.As the first stage will take up a sizable portion of our available transport that isn't earmarked for the JEFIE, naval combat forces will be stationed at crucial shipping chokepoints (indicated as the Suez, Cape of Good Hope, and Cape Horn) preventing French (or Austrian) intervention outside of the Atlantic. Portions of the three picket forces will be used to cleanse any remaining French shipping from the Pacific or Indian Oceans. This step is crucial, particularly holding the Suez from the French and Austrians as the Italians are the only other power that is helping us fight both Austria and France in the Mediterranean.

3.Advancement into Africa. The YDF and JIA will coordinate to make landings on Madagascar and, provided the area has not already been taken by Scandanavians or General Mojojojo's forces from the south already, French East Africa.

4.With the consolidation of East Africa, Naval forces making up the Suez picket shall advance to disrupt shipping along the French southern coast while any troops of the JIA, YDF, or General Mojojojo's forces may sweep up any remaining non-continental French holdings.

5.Once combat areas have been condensed to the European land theatre, the navy shall maintain a blockade of the French Coasts and and additional troops available may assist the continental allies.

Dispositions of other forces:

JEFIE: Sent to European theatre accordingly.

Taskforce Mojojojo:Sent either to Scandinavian Africa/South Africa or used to defend Djbouti and the Suez Canal depending on situation in each area.

YDF:Transported after initial 1st stage unless defense of Djbouti or Suez requires inordinate amount of manpower.

SFI:Recommended to potentially make a beeline to try and snag French territories in the Caribbean, or will continue to make minor landings along the French Atlantic coast to draw French forces away from the battlelines to the east.

I humbly submit this plan for the Emperor's consideration.

FOR HIGH COMMAND
Distribute to General Staff at Kōkyo

Manchurian Rapid Intervention Force
Commander: Yamagata Akihiro
Objectives: Protection of the Manchurian Frontier/Punitive Attacks on Russia. Should China enter the war, the MRIF should use commander discretion on whether offensive or defensive orders are required. Although Russia is not expected to take a side in the war, the army is prepared to launch a punitive operation in Siberia in order to draw Russian forces away from the sensitive battlelines in Europe.
Offensive Orders:
“Chinese Thrust” With Guangxi and Yunnan attacking the southern part of the Qing, forces drawn away from the Manchurian front should allow the MRIF to assault Beijing.
“Russian Intervention” Should the Emperor decide to intervene in Russia, the MRIF will swing north and occupy as much land as possible, theoretically up to the Ural Mountains if the situation allows.
Defensive Orders:
“Chinese Invasion” The MRIF shall fall back to the Yalu fortress line and await for reinforcements from Japan proper. Attacks should not be carried out except if in overwhelming numbers.
“Russian Assault” The MRIF should fall back only when necessary and attempt to keep the Russian armies at bay.

Japanese Intervention Army
Commander: Rudogawa Oodoman
Objectives: Seizure of French assets in Asia is the mission of the JIA. Oodoman is given large amounts of freedom to conduct operations. The JIA should avoid direct conflict as possible, as the unit is quite light.
Offensive Orders: First, after naval scouting, the capture of Pondicherry in India is a must. We do not have official treaties with the British over basing rights, so even though it is wartime we may not be able to refuel and rearm. Capture of Pondicherry is a must. After Pondicherry is taken, the JIA will move to Africa for the capture of Madagascar with the JSNF. Should the JSNF and EG units be unavailable, the JIA will conduct scouting raids. French islands near Australia will be blockaded out by the navy.
Defensive orders: Immediate retreat if the forces are equal or larger than the JIA. Should the JIA not be in a position to escape the enemy, they will stand and fight as possible retreat locations are worked out. There is no retreat from Madagascar if naval forces are not available, as our shipping is spread thin.

Japanese Army of China
Commander: Berisariusu Furabiusu
Objectives: Defense of coastal China, assist Guangxi and Yunnan in striking back at China. As the majority of our ground forces are being shuffled out of far east Asia, our professional land units in China, Korea, and Japan are rather limited. The JAoC will be tasked with invading China should hostilities break out. They will operate independently of Guangxi and Yunnan, but consulting our colleagues from the warlord states will be required.
Offensive orders: Drive up the coast towards Manchuria to force Chinese forces in towards Guangxi and Yunnan. By doing so, the Chinese army will become encircled and lose a great deal of supply. If fully successful, the JAoC will meet up with the MRIF, where they will then continue to squeeze the Chinese pocket into submission.
Defensive orders: If unable to attack, withdrawing to the coast for defense along with the Chinese Defense Force is preferable. If shipping can be spared, the JAoC will be shipped to Korea for defense, while the CDF will stay behind and fight to the last man.

Okinawa Garrison
Commander: Kazuma Kiryu
Objectives: Defense of Okinawa, scouting shipping that approaches the home islands.
Offensive orders: N/A
Defensive Orders: Defend Okinawa for as long as possible. This is a no retreat order.

Yomi Defense Force
Commander: Ikasu Hito
Objectives: The YDF’s main responsibility is Japanese assets in Africa. As we have a temporary alliance with the United Kingdom, we will not worry about the British at this moment. The YDF will be deployed to Djibouti, where they will operate as a mixed force of both a garrison and invading army through French Somalia.
Offensive Orders: Swallow up as much of French Africa as possible if the situation allows. Due to American colonization, we find ourselves unable to support Egyptian operations, and they will not be able to come to us. If Somalia is successfully taken, the YDF will be moved to Italy for combat operations near Venice.
Defensive Orders: The YDF will defend the Suez for as long as possible should the Suez come under attack. If the position is lost, the YDF will withdraw to Cairo. A military access agreement with the Ottoman Empire or the United States will allow YDF troops to withdraw out of the continent safely if Egypt is lost. If attacked in Djibouti, the force will have to fight its way out and move down French Africa, dodging attacks, before linking up in Scandinavian Africa.

Special Force Ichi
Commander: Vanilla Aishito
Objectives: SFI will be deployed against French islands, and French colonial possessions outside of Europe. Depending on commander preference, these targets include but are not limited to Guadeloupe, St. Pierre and Miquelon, and French Guiana.
Offensive orders: Operating where the French will have extremely light defense, the SFI will conduct marine landings. Although it will take a very long time to occupy as they have only light artillery, the goal is to draw French forces away from the critical European and African theaters. Should objectives in North and South America be captured, SFI will conduct hit and run raids along the French coast.
Defensive orders: The SFI is not expected to be able to survive stand up combat against an enemy. Retreat where possible, and withdraw. Should the force be destroyed it will be reconstituted in Edo.

Emperor’s Guard
Commander: Sebasu Mojojojo
Objectives: The Emperor’s Guard will be first tasked with defending South Africa from French or Austro-Hungarian marine landings. If the threat is reduced or nullified, the Emperor's Guard will be tasked with engaging and destroying French threats in Africa. Eventual deployment to Europe is a possibility.
Offensive orders: If South Africa is secure, the Emperor’s Guard will be linked up with the JIA for the capture of Madagascar. Once Madagascar is secure, the Emperor’s Guard will work their way up the coast until all of French Africa is pacified. Once complete, the Emperor’s Guard will assist in the southern European theater of operations.
Defensive orders: The EG, should it come under overwhelming marine landings in South Africa, will conduct a fighting retreat into central Africa. Should the fighting spread, the EG will fight its way to the coast for evacuation.

Japanese Expeditionary Force In Europe
Commander: Kinzo Ushiromiya
Objectives: Ushiromiya will deploy to one of the three capitals of Scandinavia and support operations in the Franco-Dutch theater. Advisor Løkke is the Scandinavian attaché. JEFIE should not operate alone, as interoperability standards between Scandinavia and Japan are only on army support, not full combined arms.
Offensive Orders: Not straying from Scandinavian Field Armies, the JEFIE is on army support. Commander initiative should only be taken if the combined French and Austro-Hungarian armies are routed. If Russia joins the war and the situation is handled in France, then the armies will move through St. Petersburg.
Defensive Orders: Should France and Austria-Hungary push the attack past Hamburg, the JEFIE is ordered to fall back to Copenhagen. Should Russia attack Sweden, forces will withdraw to Stockholm to prevent a naval invasion. If the situation continues to collapse, JEFIE will evacuate to the Suez via Bergen, Norway.

Chinese Defense Force
Commander: Tatsuya Kowareta
Objectives: The defense of coastal China is the number one priority of the CDF. It is made up entirely of Chinese soldiers, as we hope this will give them encouragement to join in our defense as we have provided them jobs. High command understands the fear of the CDF defecting, but according to informants very little nationalism exists in the forces.
Offensive Orders: Should the Chinese offensive stall, the CDF will join the JAoC to help close the Chinese pocket up completely. Once the pocket is crushed, the CDF will be in charge of garrison duty to prevent rebellion.
Defensive Orders: Hold coastal provinces until the JAoC can evacuate. Hopefully, relief will come from Guangxi and Yunnan and prevent the CDF’s utter destruction, if not, the CDF will fight until completely destroyed.

Central Honshu Garrison
Commander: Yamashiro Megane
Objectives: Defense of Honshu, particularly the capital and surrounding industrial regions.
Offensive Orders: None
Defensive Orders: Defend the capital until utterly destroyed.

Farmer’s Army
Commander: Jeremy Corbyn
Objectives: As our largest army by manpower alone, but our least equipped, the Farmer’s Army will remain on garrison duty in Japan until the threat to Japan and our colonies is rendered low by either the capture of Africa, or if China enters the war and we are forced to respond. This unit will be shadowed by the home guards for possible sedition.
Offensive orders: Presuming the entry of China into the war, the FA will deploy to Korea and Manchuria as fast as possible to assist forces in that theater with the capture of China. Should China either not enter the war, or be knocked out entirely by the combined allies, the FA will be deployed upon the Russian border, and a punitive mission will be initiated.
Defensive orders: If Japan is being invaded, the Farmer’s Army will march directly to the threat and fight for as long as possible. Rally points are Hiroshima, Edo, and Sapporo. Should China be invading, the FA will deploy to coastal China to give manpower to the smaller garrisons there.

Kuril Coastwatchers:
Commander: Hiro Sullat
Objectives: Defense of the Kuril Islands is of utmost security importance to Japan. Loss of the Kuril Islands will result in the door to Hokkaido being opened wide, and forcing our garrisons in the south to come up. If the islands are deemed safe after an indeterminate period of time, the KC unit will remain in place, unless war with Russia or the United States breaks out.
Offensive orders: Presuming a war against Russia, the KC will invade Petropavlovsk and await further instructions. If the situation in Siberia is good, they will continue the march towards the Ural Mountains.
Defensive orders: The KC will defend the Kuril Islands for as long as possible. If forced to retreat, they will join the garrisons in Japan and defend against aggression pointed at Hokkaido from the north.

Central Honshu Garrison
Commander: Sukoshi Aka
Objectives: Defense of northern Honshu, with regards to the pathways from Hokkaido to Honshu.
Offensive Orders: None
Defensive Orders: Defend Honshu until completely unable. Once that happens, retreat to Edo for the final defense of Japan.

Home Guards
Commander: Segata Sanshiro
Objectives: Assist conscript armies in Japan with defense. As the HG is armed with heavy artillery and professional soldiers, the HG will rush to any landing in Japan and respond accordingly.
Offensive Orders: None
Defensive Orders: The HG will be the first to fight any attempts landings in Japan. Should months pass without threats from France or Austria, the HG will deploy into South East Asia and provide defense for the Johore-Borneo-Yomi theater.

Army of the Rising Sun
Commander: Tariq al-Dhiib
Objectives: As a component of the defense of Manchuria, the AotRS is currently based in Japan awaiting shipment. Their priority will come lower than the combat forces heading for Europe and Africa. Once deployed however, they will carry out missions side by side with the MRIF. They will also be expected to be the first into Russia should war break out.
Offensive Orders: Offensive orders are the same as the MRIF.
Defensive Orders: Defensive orders are same as the MRIF.

Japanese Special Naval Force
Commander: Bukkoro Iwata
Objectives: Iwata will operate in a support role in the Mediterranean theater of operations. His responsibilities include the capture of French North Africa, and operations against colonies of the French in west Africa, including the puppet kingdom of Senegal
Offensive Orders: TBD
Defensive Orders: TBD

Pondicherry need to be occupied before the British do it. As stated there is uncertainty whether we will be able to refuel at their ports, which means we need to take it sooner rather than later. As such I implore our Emperor to allow an occupation of it before the JIA moves on to occupy French Polynesia and French Indonesia, not to mention the joint operation to Madagascar with the JSNF.

The Admiralty seconds this motion, or requests that in lieu of Pondicherry (due to the possibility of it being overrun by British Indian troops, that we ensure the JIA has secured at least one of the Mid-Indian Ocean islands from the French such as Reunion or Isle Tromelin. As this will be a vital stepping point for our deployment into the African and European theatres.

The Great War 1894-1901, as well as following conflicts

Personal notes from Takae Shimamura

British attack on Pondicherry came far earlier than we expected. We assumed that British forces were out of step. We must immediately reroute the flotilla towards Djibouti. Reports of French colonial troops invading soon. I had hoped we could get away with not sending our boys into combat early, but we must move with haste.

From Bukkoro Iwata's Memoir Ten Thousand Miles

From the helm of the Sakura II I met with Admiral Shimamura. We shared tea and prepared for the biggest fight of our lives. I knew Shimamura, as well as his father. Both were masters of the sea, and quiet men. I could never hope to understand it. Whenever I wasn't at war I had always wanted to go out and get into a bar fight, or instigate a brawl at the barbershop. However, as we passed the coast of Oman, for the first time I felt a sick feeling. I had never been out of the far Pacific before, I had always wanted to travel. But not travel like this.

Newspaper article from American war correspondent Lee Perry

JAPAN LEADS FROM FRONT May 10 1894-The Japanese marines landed in the colony of Djibouti today with the express goal of protecting the naval bases capture from French troops. The French soldiers, made up mainly of troops from the colonies, broke and routed at the sight of a force that dwarf them in size. According to a soldier after the battle "This is only the beginning". May God help them all.

Poem of a Colonial Soldier

The shelling never stops.
My brother in arms drops.
Who sent us to this fray?
We shall make them pay.

Communique from General Løkke

Dutch, German, and Italian forces caught out of position. Need immediate backup. We await General Ushiromiya in Copenhagen desperately. We were the only ones prepared for war. Combined forces of France and Austria-Hungary could be in Denmark in only a month. British ground forces attempting to lure away French troops from the Netherlands

The Untold Story of Madgascar by G. Pinchot

The large JNSF landed in northern Madagascar to no resistance. Although attrition was high due to relatively low supply, the army suspected that perhaps the French had evacuated Madagascar for a large thrust in Europe. How wrong General Iwata was.

Last message to be sent from embassy STOP Communist rebels beginning to ransack city STOP French troops closing in evacuating on civilian ship to London STOP

Ten Thousand Miles

We knew after that titanic battle that we had won Madagascar. Or so I had thought. The French successes in Europe meant that soldiers would keep pouring into Madagascar, forcing us to put down soldier after soldier, hoping our luck would change. It was not until the British arrived many months later that we could successfully put all of Madagascar under our thumb. Strange, really. It has been the most beautiful place I have ever visited, and yet so full of devastation.

Quote from General Ushiromiya

We are the only thing standing between the frogs and all of Europe! Move out!

Diary of Konrad Eisner

The Japanese tactics are astounding. They moved in flawlessly behind our army, which broke relatively quickly under the attack. If I had to take our Emperor and the Emperor of Japan and put them in a fight, I think I would know who I would bet to win...

History of the Great War 1894-1901 by Jack Steiner

Although the raid into English territory would be quickly put down by militias that sprung up over the nation, the massive British losses incurred near Dunkirk would severely damage the national prestige. Leadership in the UK suddenly had to deal with angry communists, who felt that the war with the French would turn into just another imperialist war that would lead to the occupation of the UK. In Leeds, the British army turned their guns on peaceful protesters, killing at least 300, and wounding far many more.

General Ushiromiya

"That's it--I'm ordering the retreat. We need to live so we can fight again rather than die over this strip of German clay. Retreat back towards Jutland. God dammit!"

Notes from staff meeting in Edo, August 1895

Italian alps line has folded (SEND REINFORCEMENTS?). Reports of French atrocities in Alsace-Lorraine. Austro-Hungarian thrust dividing Germany in half. Contact Ushriomiya to prepare for a retreat. Evacuate Japanese citizens from Germany with the army if possible.

Ten Thousand Miles

I so desperately pleaded with the Emperor to be sent to Europe. When he demanded I stay to fight off the repeated French incursions, I snapped at him and questioned his royal status. If it was not for my excellent service record for many years, and if I was a lesser man, I would have been rounded up and shot on the spot. I'm surprised I've made it this far, truth be told.

History of the Great War 1894-1901

Although the attempted German recapture of Berlin would fail at this phase in the war, the monument to the Japanese Expeditionary Force standing in Berlin today is a testament to the bravery shown by the Japanese forces, who threw themselves into the melee without bothering about the large French and Austro-Hungarian armies that would be nearby.

Diary of Konrad Eisner

The cowardice that was on display by our fellow German adversaries near Berlin is honestly unbelievable. Every general in Europe knows that if Germany would have just entered combat instead of retreating away, they would have smashed the front wide open. Maybe its for the best they are so incompetent.

Popular historical fiction novel Grave of Innocence

General Ushiromiya only sounded the retreat when he had to. We might have lost the battle in Berlin, and I lost six of my friends from school in the Nagoya battalion, but we took over 200,000 of those bastards with us. That's all that counts.

Emperor's personal note to Tariq al-Dhiib

Orders have changed. Italy is collapsing into rebellion and has nearly been lost. Deploy to Sicily at once. Success in the Italian theater will result in a larger paycheck for you.

Diplomatic complaint from Ross III

Your Imperial Highness, as the reigning King of the Cocos Islands, I must protest your special forces that have landed on the island with the express intent of burning down infrastructure. The French steamers that refueled here were only here for humanitarian reasons, and would not ever dare carry arms [editors note, the French flotilla was sunk one day after this complaint, with a loss of all hands and 8,000 soldiers]

Clipping from communist underground paper "The Red Post"

These Japanese soldiers come all the way from Asia to Europe with the ideal of "liberating" us from French occupation. I was told that we were all in this together by our monarch. Evidently not. The Japanese landed and proceeded to slaughter our brothers in arms. Do not let them get away with this. Resist!

Ten Thousand Miles

I finally got my wish. With the complete pacification of French Africa, it was time we helped our allies. We landed in the French city of Marseilles. I even joined the landing party. Had the other generals found out about my conduct in leading from the front, I probably would have been sent back to Japan. Luckily, they didn't know. Our troops, despite hard fighting in Madagascar, were some of the freshest troops in Europe, and we would show Europe the power of Japan.

Note attached to Vanilla Aishito's grave

Your small force in Europe was the bravest the world has ever seen. The people of Germany thank you.

Last words of General Ushiromiya

"YOU WILL NEVER REACH COPENHAGEN, NOT IF I HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT IT" Ushiromiya was last seen firing a revolver before a massive explosion tore through the battle line.

History of the Great War 1894-1901

The legendary Ichi unit had bought the JSNF valuable time in their offensive through southern France. By holding up the French army for a few precious more days, the final capture of French Mediterranean ports led to high amounts of supply flowing in from the Suez. For Japan and their allies, they were now on the attack.

Bukochosho award citation

For actions on January 29 1898, General al-Dhiib successfully fought his way through Italy to link up with Japanese forces operating in France, saving the front.

Ten Thousand Miles

Orders changed. The JNSF was merged with fresh units from Japan and renamed "the European Liberation Army". After we knocked out resistance in France, our orders were simple. Capture the coast near the Bay of Biscay, then take Paris. French resolve was wavering, and it was our turn. Special Force Ichi was destroyed covering our advance. Vanilla was among the dead. He was too young.

Diary from unknown French soldier in Germany

As we marched to the border of Germany and Austria, I laughed hysterically. The fact that I am alive is nothing short of a miracle. We fought communists, anarchists, reactionaries, Scandinavians, Germans, and even a few Brits before we made it to the border. I abandoned my post as soon as we entered Austria. I'm going to try to make it to Greece, and live off my spoils there.

Emperor's message to fellow allied heads of state

I write to you about our only request during this war is that we take Pondicherry away from the French. We believe the war, already too long and brutal, would be prolonged by asking much more. This request is one the French will consent to.

Ten Thousand Miles

As al-Dhiib captured Paris and marched down the Champs-Élysées, we cleaned up the rest of the French army near the Dutch border. We knew the war was won. All I wanted at this point was to retire. The Emperor had other plans...

Lee Perry

May 7 1901-The war in Europe it seems is over. The French have offered no more serious military opposition, although harsh fighting continues through out Austria-Hungary. Italian, Dutch, and German soldiers work to free their countries. The war will end soon. But at what cost was this worth? Millions have died. Europe is completely burnt out. Many colonial subjects have suffered at the hands of the imperial powers warring. At least it is all over.

Sorry I didn't get as much focus on individual armies as I wanted. This war was extremely brutal and I had to abandon literally all of my plans because of the absolutely terrible performance of our European allies. At least it is over.
