http://www.hrg-inc.com/reduce-speeding-with-speed-humps-and-other-traffic-control-techniques/

Enforcement is important, but human nature is that people are going to drive as fast as they feel comfortable. You can try to change human nature if you'd like, but if you want to actually make things safer you need to impact how people feel when driving at 50km/h through an area that you'd like to see 30km/h speeds.

Did you actually read your link? It said nothing about adding curves or impairing sightlines -- in fact, it pointed out that trees work as a traffic calming measure, but care must be taken to ensure they don't obstruct visibility.

Traffic calming measures absolutely work, but it should be done in ways that don't obstruct sightlines. If it must be done, then it should be in a way that appears to obstruct sightlines without actually doing so, so that people feel it would be unsafe to speed, but without actually reducing safety. You need to be able to see and identify potential hazards to drive safely -- anything that prevents that will eventually result in an incident.

No poo poo, this is exactly what I meant by imparing sightlines. Of course you want to ensure that signage etc is still visible, but by adding trees etc you create the impression that you dont have good visibility, and as a result people slow down.

There are obviously areas where this is a bad idea. See country roads, where cutting back the brush/forest/whatever allows for motorists to see things like deer at lot earlier.

Oh, okay, then we basically agree.

I still don't like artificially curving roads, especially in residential areas, because they're horrid for parking and visibility. My parents' suburb has wide, gently curving roads and it's no good -- it combines the worst parts of wide roads with the worst parts of curved roads, while having the benefits of neither one, and that's specifically what I think about when someone talks about introducing unnecessary curves. Things which artificially make the road narrower are the better way to go about that, IMO.

In fact, that second link specifically discusses why wide, curved streets don't work. It also mentions alternating diagonal parking with parallel parking to create a similar curving effect, whereas just plopping in a lovely, curved road is worse, because it doesn't work as well and it's also more difficult to park safely on.

I'm willing to believe this is a case of Calgary finding a good idea, and then loving up the implementation. In a similar vein, they also built a diverging diamond, but they hosed it up really bad and everyone hates it. There's a forced left turn immediately after the intersection in one direction, separated by dividers well ahead, so you have people scrambling to change lanes, and the lights aren't timed properly, so everything fucks up.

Counterpoint: restricted sight lines and pointless turns actually meaningfully reduce safety regardless of speed, so, no, they shouldn't be used to slow traffic down. Restricted speed should be accomplished through enforcement because, gently caress you, you're driving a car and you should be expected to follow the rules even when you don't want to.

I dont have sources handy, but i'm pretty sure it's actually the opposite. People tend to drive at speeds that feel natural for a given road, regardless of what the posted speed limits are. Narrowing roads does a much better job of reducing traffic speed than enforcement.

I agree... I didn't say gently caress all against narrowing roads or other traffic calming devices, which I approve of. I was talking specifically about restricting sight lines, and adding curves, which are both awful when done incorrectly (substantiated by all the links posted so far, no less) Why does everyone seem to respond to me like I'm saying we should build wide, straight roads with no traffic calming devices everywhere?

And regardless of what people want to do, there is a role for increased driver education and enforcement. When you're in command of a vehicle, you can't just do whatever the gently caress you like, or whatever you feel is correct. Our senses and our judgement betray us all the time.

EDIT: Okay, with regard to my original post, I can see how it might seem like I was against all traffic calming measures, but I'm really only against the ones I specifically mentioned, and I think there has to be a lot more enforcement regardless.

The idea is that buying a million dollar house is very expensive and they'll have to tap into family and other networks to get the downpayment, but a trades guy can easily pull 100k+ a year working up north in alberta or on the new pipeline, so once the pipeline starts up he can either work on it directly or up north in alberta when the oil boom starts up again due to the pipeline and quick make back his downpayment and not be financially crippled.

I felt bad for him because he was telling us all his plan and how the pipeline and a new alberta oil boom are 100% sure things and gearing up any moment now when another friend at the table just started reading outloud that exact news headline about the pipeline stopping all further development. "oh..." and sat down looking deflated.

Scorchy posted:

He makes fine money locally, just not living out of a work camp in northern Alberta while not getting into trucks or drugs money. He had a buddy just bank about 100k in a year by working hard and living cheap in northern alberta.

Alternately, I guess now Alberta is offering to invest in the pipeline for Kinder-Morgan, which some people on Twitter are aghast at because that would be GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP, so I guess they'll have to just buy KM their pipeline and let KM keep it for free.
