The problem with little gadgets that would warn you if a child was left in the car, is that you'd start to naturally depend on it, and then you'd be much more likely to have a tragedy if it failed for some reason. Having it be a constant splinter in the minds of parents as their worst possible nightmare is probably the best prevention, honestly. As soon as you start to depend on only one thing then that swiss cheese model is reduced to just a single hole that could be passed through at any moment.

Maybe hospitals should show a video about not leaving your kid in the car. Works for not shaking babies.

My parents left me outside twice by mistake when I was a baby. Once on a beach where I got sunburnt and luckily once at night where I got pneumonia. So it cancels out. We didn't need baby sensors in my day and look at us. I'm wracked with sickness and malaise and pray for death that doesn't come every day. Instead I vote for awful policies that won't ruin the world until I'm dead. 💀 I post this a lot I think but I reread the Anna Stubblefield article today and just goddamn the whole thing is so hosed up. There's this thing called facilitated communication where trained facilitators help disabled people speak by helping them point to letters on a board. It's a total scam though and has failed pretty much every test that it's actually been put to, so practitioners refuse to be examined now. The most damning test being that when investigators secretly showed two different pictures to the facilitator and disabled person and asked them what they saw the disabled person didn't spell out what they could see but what the facilitator was seeing. A professor who was big into this was arrested and put on trial for having a sexual relationship with a guy who has the mental age of a toddler. She just convinced herself that he was her dream man and raped him because of course he couldn't give consent. Full article about it here Update on her succesful appeal Really good article about by FC is dangerous bullshit Started reading this and bookmarked it for tonight when I have time!

The Stubblefield article is one of the most things on Earth. Also her daughter showed up to yell at the court wearing a Tiny Rick t-shirt (really).

I remember the first time someone posted it thinking it was really funny and then I saw the pictures it was actually real That revisted article is only from a few days ago so she will be sentenced again in early May. I think she plead guilty after her initial appeal was successful so it's pretty unlikely she'll serve any more prison time. The even more troubling thing to me is that it seem FC as a practice will keep on being used.

Pick posted:She's loving crazy, but not in a defensible way. I mean she's just a narcissist, as big a narcissist as any serial killer. Agreed. She's just so oblivious, talking about how disabled black people are amongst the most vulnerable in society and liable to be preyed on by the wealthy white classes. Then basically imprints her ideal man on a literal toddler, good christ. It's just so messed up that it's hard to even belive it's real some times quote:A week later, Anna recalled, the couple tried to have sex in Anna’s office at Conklin Hall, with condoms, a blanket and an exercise mat. It didn’t work, and they ended up just sitting on the floor together, Anna talking and D.J. typing. Anna asked him if he might want to see some pornography, ‘‘to see what things looked like and different positions people used and that sort of thing.’’ She said she wouldn’t want to pay for porn or watch anything offensive, but that she would be O.K. with finding free clips on the Internet that depicted couples engaging in mutually pleasurable intercourse. He demurred, typing out that in his view the women in porn are being exploited, and that, besides, Anna was more beautiful than any porn star, and he really wanted to be thinking only about her when they finally made love. I think it might be in the slate article where they talk about the FC who kept getting called "fat ugly rosie" by the disabled girl she was helping. Then when Rosie (the FC) failed one of the tests from investigators it just meant she'd been saying all these horrible things about herself.

I saw facilitated communication in Grade 3, and even then it seemed sketchy - I specifically asked if the teacher wasn't just spelling out what she wanted the student to say. No molestation, though. That I knew of.

Like how can someone have deluded themselves to this point where they can say the following and then rape a disabled black person under the guise of "helping them"quote:Yet for all her work on behalf of African-Americans, she worried that she might be ambushed by the ‘‘habits of racism.’’ ‘‘Even in well-intentioned quests to be antiracist,’’ she wrote, ‘‘white people all too often invade or destroy the space of nonwhite people.’’ The same essay lays out what could be a thesis statement for her whole career: It is crucial, she wrote, for white philosophers ‘‘to wrestle with the horrors and conundrums of whiteness.’’

I think you have to be able to laugh and make jokes about the absurdity of these situations tbh. It's also different to taking joy in the pain and suffering caused. Rick (the old scientist) puts his mind in a young teenage clone of himself to go have fun hijinks with the kids. However he'll sing songs or draw pictures etc. that show his old man persona has been suppressed and is desperate to get out and be heard. Like he sings a song at a party "pleasee just let me out this isn't a metaphor in a song". loving christ what a piece of poo poo Pick posted:I think it says a lot about how demented she is that she fell in love with herself as projected onto the most noble thing to fall in love with she could imagine. It’s reminiscent of the recent case where the white moms adopted 6 children of color but didn’t want to feed them, then drove off a cliff. I’d say it’s a symptom of the gendered assumption that women are “designed” to nurture with a huge helping of white mans burden chucked in. I think it’s stronger as a crossover effect than either in isolation. A weird fringe effect of sexism and racism which entrenches both.

There's so many different things contributing to the hosed up nature of this case that it can be a textbook example of so many different problems in society and personality. A big one is that just because you want to help doesn't mean what you are doing is helpful and can often be actively harmful.

Perhaps the scariest thing is people still not understanding its textbook abuser logic and RAPE. So sad that the brother basically accepts justice is impossible under the circumstances. In part based on the ethics education he received. From her, a rapist.

Yeah that's another horrific aspect of the whole thing. How must that brother feel knowing he introduced DJ to Anna. Obviously he's blameless here but goddamn I can't imagine that isn't a immensely painful thing to deal with. Really curious to see what happens in May but it sounds like she's going to be free and clear. Also like you said it could not be more explicitly rape but people seem really hesitant to define it as that.

They are extremely difficult to get onto the market because if they fail and the "swiss cheese" of events comes together, the result is a dead baby. You really need multiple hurdles in place. Like the biggest one, which is you should only ever have a carseat in the car when there's a kid riding in it. That way you don't get used to the idea of seeing it in your rearview mirror when there's no baby to worry about and get complacent. Make a habit of stopping for a second and thinking about where the baby is every single morning when you first step into your workplace, even if you aren't responsible for the baby that morning. Keep a picture of the baby on your desk that's right in your face so that long periods of time can't go by without the baby entering your mind. Stuff like that.

Just invent a little wrist band for the baby to wear that sends you an alert on your phone when you are get a certain distance away.
