Wouldn't SA closing trade with us just encourage us to trade with Iran more to compensate? I don't get that "threat". I mean we can always start selling tanks to the Iranian instead, i think they will use their more efficiently.

I'm pretty sure Iran is still under an arms embargo. The sanctions were to be lifted gradually, and I believe arms sales were the very last to go.

Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, east Libya strong man, is rumored to have suffered a heart attack but according to the East Libya government it's just rumors from "Islamists trying to weaken us and he is in Lebanon!"
He is getting treated in Paris according to Le Monde's "confidential sources". I will trust Le Monde on this rumor.

This is not actually incompatible with the position that there's been no chemical attack though. I mean, it could also be the Americans destroying evidence that would exonerate Assad.

Has Russia made similar threats to repeal American aggression against Syria towards Israel? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Israel seems to continue to strike Syria whenever it pleases without much consequence. If so, why different for the US?

Netanyahu's talked to Putin multiple times, and presumably has made it clear that he's targeting weapons transfers to Hezbollah and Iranian forces in the country more than the regime. Russia complains sometimes, but in some ways they might even be happy to have Israel limiting Iranian influence to some extent so they can remain the dominant partner in influencing the regime. Trump, on the other hand, is raving like a maniac and careening wildly between full withdrawal and openly taunting Russia while calling Assad an animal, so he's less predictable and causes more alarm.

In general, Trump's temperament is something worth keeping in mind any time anyone wants the US to engage in military action anywhere. Even when it's justified, this is the moron in charge who's going to be making the call.

I'm genuinely starting to think Turkey's going to be the only country that ends up in a better place by the end of this war than they were at the start. You can make a case for Iran too, but they were already pretty friendly with Assad, and depending on how things play out they might be biting off more than they can chew by provoking all their enemies.

there's reports now that there are more houthi missiles either intercepted or landed in Riyadh.

also, just as I suspected, trump's bluster + his inaction so far had given time for assad to move his aircraft into russian airbases, I now think the war if it comes will either be very limp strikes on empty buildings or not happen at all.

I think he's too committed and needs the distraction from domestic problems too badly to do nothing, plus he doesn't even have a Secretary of State to make a deal to try to save some face here. Yeah. Obama looked foolish for not enforcing his (stupid) red line.

Trump, having already done the cruise missile thing, would look even more foolish if he didn't do something this time, especially after loving taunting Russia about it on twitter.

I guess I'm on board for limited strikes that don't really do much, though more than last time.
