I'm pretty sure there's also something to do with hard disk drives not being too common in home computers back in the 80s, so saving your work was mostly done on floppies.

Internal drives are harder to visualize but by the prevalence of 3.5 the whole OS on one 5.25, programs on the other dual drive thing was very much in the past.
