Does anyone think the Termite is going to be useful? Auto-inflicting a mortal to enemy units within 12" has got to be useful for something, right?

Uroboros posted:-1 as a modifier imparted by the occasional ability or power is cool. Having an army-wide ability is a different story. Especially when your army has ways to stack it. Yeah it's this. If your choice is -1 to hit on your whole army or anything else, you'll almost always take -1 to hit. Even more so if you can stack it on big chunks of the army (looking at you, Eldar). It's fine as an ability some units have, and the stratagem is ok because there's some cat and mouse involved, but as an army trait which immediately makes your opponent's shooting 16% worse for no cost it's obnoxious.

Alaitoc can stack them to pretty ridiculous levels using mostly free upgrades & powers. Rangers with Conceal can be -3 to hit on top of the cover benefit, as can advancing vehicles. Many other units can get to -2. Yet for some reason the Tyranid codex that came out at the same time ensured that you couldn't stack Venomthropes, Malanthropes or spore cysts that all require points invested to use.

If you're Guard its 33% reduction in effectiveness, and if you're Orks its a loving 50% drop... Even on armies with 2+ like Custodes, you're paying a huge points premium for models that hit on 2+ and to basically make them regular space marines is a huge kick to the teeth.

Schadenboner posted:Does anyone think the Termite is going to be useful? Auto-inflicting a mortal to enemy units within 12" has got to be useful for something, right? Default Chaos Termax is 106 points with two combi-bolters and the -4 AP 8 STR D6 damage Rock Eater (Pistol, 8" range), it can DS within 9 inches of enemies. It can transport 12 Chaos infantry, but it sucks for transporting characters obviously since it can randomly eat them when they disembark. However, when it does this and when it kills a model itself it can roll a dice and, on a 5+, heals a wound (of its 10). If you could find a way to relocate it as you need I could see a fun (although probably never competitive) army based around having a bunch of cheap Termax's that can pop up and devastate something, and then find a way to move popped Termax's around to continue using Rock Eater, while cheap cultists embark and disembark to intentionally get eaten and heal it. IDK if theres any teleports that work on vehicles though, I guess you could have a Chaos Knight throw them around? Anyways if it wasnt for its mobility it would be a pretty baller vehicle even without building around it.

Yeah the relative increase is obviously worse the worse place you start from. It's just such a boring mechanic; like Booley said, it's not in any way interactive, you just turn up and say "my dudes are harder to shoot at than other dudes, gently caress you." It wasn't so bad on Raven Guard/Alpha Legion where it only applied to some part of the army, and they want to close with you so the 12" thing is an actual limitation, but for Eldar and Ad Mech which get it universally and which will happily sit back at 48" it's not great design.

This is also a great point. A -1 to hit on an army that is short range or assault in design is a lot different than one that is about sitting back and has insane movement to begin with.

Other nice thing that might be worth considering; I think it's one of (if not the?) cheapest 3-wound explosion models.

Okay, so I'll open myself up to mockery, here: In this article on Spikey Bits, the following is said: https://spikeybits.com/2018/04/40k-champion-breaks-down-faq-changes.html quote:You can’t move after deep striking- This is so unbelievably huge. Gone are the days of deep striking 30 Tzangors and casting warp time on them to charge an army turn 1. Deep Strike quicken spears are a soon to be a distant memory. Competitive 40k as we know it is going to change fundamentally. ...but I can't find anything in the FAQ that says that you can't move after a deep strike. You can't deep strike on turn one anywhere but your own DZ by the new FAQ, I understand that. I don't have the rules on me right now, but I believe that the author of the article is flat-out wrong. Or am I just missing something?

It's in the main rulebook FAQ, you can't use abilities that grant movement after the movement phase on units that arrived that turn via deep strike.

Beer4TheBeerGod posted:Someone tell me I am dumb/smart for thinking about shelving my Primaris project to put together a Necron force for NOVA. Unless you have a particular reason you like Necrons I'd say stick with your Primaris. The meta is always shifting and unless you're a person who expects to go out and win tournaments there's really no point in chasing it. You've deservedly taken a lot of pride in your Primaris marines and I think it would be a shame to shelf them. I mean, that being said if you legitimately like Necrons absolutely go for it. They have reasonably interesting fluff these days and I certainly understand the appeal of an army that can potentially be very simple to paint.

While I am incredibly biased, grumpy robot skeletons that want you to get the gently caress of their lawn are cooler than space marines. I played six games with necrons against nids, T'au, guard, and deldar last week, and it's probably the most fun set of games I've had in 40k. Wraiths and tesla immortals are just great. E: also, borrow someone's Necron codex and read the fluff page for Nemesor Zandrekh and Vargard Obyron. It's fantastic.

I'm only taking a single relic, which is free. You can use the stratagem to take multiple. Aerotech Specialists. If you take 2 it's -1, and if you take 3 it's -3. Forgeworld doesn't matter for this one because the relic is good for any Adeptus Mechanicus Character, it's not forgeworld specific (even though the Relic is). Battalion (5) + Battalion (5) + Supreme Command (1) + Base (3) = 14.

Beer4TheBeerGod posted:Someone tell me I am dumb/smart for thinking about shelving my Primaris project to put together a Necron force for NOVA. Why do you need to look at forgeworld when the Tesseract Vault exists? I believe that one of the only ways to make pre-codex necrons tournament good was to run the forge world Pylon, so you could look at that, but to be honest the Vault is probably better at this point (to the point where im legitimately wondering if triple vaults is going to be the next meta boogeyman, given that the only thing that could reliably kill them off were obliterators and big custard bike sqauds, both of which take a huge hit from not being able to deep strike). Mind you, the pylon probably.also gets a big boost from the deep strike nerf with it’s 120 inch range.
