Yes, but those guys hiss at you and then write an angry 20 page diatribe any time they hear the word "digital", this is why I referred to it as "the answer to a question no one asked". Golden ears audiophiles will scoff at how they're made and regular people will go "I can get that for way less money".

hexwren posted:Are MFSL records really that much better? The only one I have is the only copy of that particular record I've heard that wasn't 25 years old and played to death, so there's not much point in trying to compare that way. The Mofi brand has a good average when it comes to stellar mastering work than the regular run of the mill pressing of the same record, but they've also had some dudes in their decades of business. So basically like any other purchasing decision, do your homework, try out a pressing (the Weezer - Blue and REM - Document for affordable, but clearly noticeable boosts in quality, you can snag both Weezer Blue/Pinkerton under $30, usually around $25, where as I purchased my copy of Document at $30) and compare. If you can't do that just read a bunch of reviews and thoughts on different pressings. I read a lot of forums and scour discogs for thoughts on pressings and I keep in mind that not all vinyl manufacturers are alike and some of them can do great manufacturing work (QRP, RTI, PALLAS) while others are known for less than great work. and at the end of the day it comes down to your ears. if you've got hearing damage you ain't gunna notice poo poo most likely. You'll probably be all over the board because your ear is trying to make up for what you can't hear by reproducing to the best of its ability what it's receiving and how to transmit that to your brain. So I wouldn't worry too much about it for the most part. As long as you trust the person doing the mastering work and it is being manufactured by a credible brand you're probably getting something good.

I think we're are all making a lot of assumptions. This may not be a premium, so acting like it's going to be as expensive as a mo-fi pressing is unwarranted until we have more information. It could be really cool. Let's not be luddites (I say in a thread dedicated to purchasing music on plastic discs in an analog format).

I personally only listen to records made by companies that still use analog balances to weigh their shipments, digital scales just ruin everything. If the address isn't hand written on the box out may as well be trash.

MoFi talk: I have the Live/Dead and Skull & Roses LPs, and in addition to the records sounding phenomenal they did a great job recreating the gatefolds even within the confines of their design aesthetic (the uniformity of which I happen to like anyway). I also have Elvis Costello's Armed Forces and that one is nice as well. I had a copy of Beck's Sea Change that I sold to some dude in NYC for $250. He bought it through Discogs and since I lived there at the time I suggested meeting up to save him the cost of shipping and any potential shipping damage. When I handed it to him he said, "Is it true?? Everything they say about this pressing??" I just smiled and shrugged. It sounded fine to my ears, but a +$210 ROI toward moving expenses was more exciting at the time.

Yeah, that’s a tape of Telelog stuck on the front, PIAPTK like to be jerks about your record not fitting in with the rest of the collection. Nice orange sherbet-y vinyl Jim White - Waffles, Triangles, and Jesus. Another PIAPTK beauty, translucent maple syrup double LP King Gizzard - Polygondwanaland (Needlejuice Records pressing.) The second variant of NJR’s inaugural release, a red and blue split Mother 2 (Earthbound) OST repress. I bought it for myself, and received the Meteor Splatter, nice. Then I realized it would be a perfect gift for a friend’s birthday and ordered a second copy. When he opened it, we discovered he got a variant, Ghost of Starman Starburst. We agreed it would be Totally Cool and Kickass to swap discs and now we both have both And an oldie (Wooden) Wand/Golden Boots split 7”. My first taste of Golden Boots, found in a St Paul record store some 8-ish years past. Also one of my first color records. It's not exactly "colorfull" but i really love the grimy look of the Dustforce ost. It's hard to get a real good picture with my lighting setup but it's transparent grey with black smoke swirl. Similarly not colourful, the "starfield" color varient on the Super Time Force soundtrack looks super slick imo. SeXReX fucked around with this message at 04:12 on Apr 20, 2018 |

Oh here's something that's loving hilarious: that I Am a Resident tribute album ended up getting about 200 entries, so the band decided they're going to remix everything, add their own music on top of it and release it as a proper album under The Residents' name. Some of the bands are furious they're not going to be credited.

I think if you put everything together including live albums, outtake albums and the like, I think they're at about 140 total? At the height of it they were releasing 8+ albums a year. They've currently got two on the way: I Am a Resident and Intruders. Hardy Fox has already released three albums this year already with his own version of The Ghost of Hope coming next, which is loving crazy. Are any of the current Residents the original guys?

my dad was getting rid of an old set of Sony stereo equipment and tower speakers, so I bought an entry level record player (AP60) and am very very very much enjoying listening to music in this format. I forgot the fun of buying an album. My question is, is it usual for the arm to need to move around a lot during play? It's constantly moving side to side a bit and up and down to adjust for slight warps in the records - even the new ones I've bought. my burgeoning collection:

Up and down is normal but not side to side. I'm not familiar with the TT does it have anti skate? As long as the weight is set correctly and it's not skipping around on the record I wouldn't worry about it.
|
# ? Apr 21, 2018 15:33 |

Side to side is from the record being slightly off center, which almost all of them are. As long as it’s not a crazy amount causing skips that’s probably all it is.
