I did consider that but then I thought that you might end up with both Ai's set too evasive and nothing even happening. But tweaking the settings for AI hilarity/insanity is also amazing. Maybe a rule where if the lances don't engage or it goes beyond a certain number of turns it counts as a loss for both players to disincentivise overly defensive settings?

I wouldn't even know how to set up a custom AI vs. AI skirmish.

It seems like a Shadow Hawk would be a good "scout" mech for a much heavier lance. It's strong enough to eat lights, fast enough to keep good evasion and sturdy enough to take punishment while still staying in the "medium" weight for initiative. As well as having a decent melee profile (and some support slots) if you really want to punch someone in the back.

Actually that's the Shadow Hawk's role in the official description:

Yeah, Sidestrafe got completely chewed up by Ecks because the Firestarter (the real MVP) and the Jenner were just loving impossible to hit at 5+ pips with his shooty lance, with the firestarter still being able to gently caress poo poo up with like <5 structure in its centre torso, as it still had a flamer + MG running. Yeah, I'm taking a master tac shadowhawk or something similar to punch the poo poo out of any lights in multiplayer.

While a bulwark swap would be a huge loving deal to how fragile your outnumbered lance is, I do wonder what would happen just because my insane twisty straw logic thinks about how much easier it could potentially make a lot of the early game too.

Something I was reminded of with what partial hunks of Beagle's streams I've sat down and watched so far. Not his Orion soaking fire in that big brawl against a ton of 1/4 armor mechs.

The overall multi mission trend of Beaglerush forgetting/having to be reminded of that enemies had guarded status. A big deal towards trying and failing to crack open a seemingly vulnerable section with precision shots.

If early low skull mission enemies couldn't ever get bulwark, would the benefits to your killing efficiency balance out the loss of using one of your pilots to bulwark tank in the early game? Or would the raw volume of enemies still make it a net loss rather than a sidegrade meta shake up?

Enemy skills seem to be a big loving deal, even their passive gains. But since so many people know literally 1,000 times more about Battletech than me? I just sort of naively assume nobody should be surprised by the results. Like when blowing all your moral to absolutely gently caress up heavy mech's pilot and then turn their ride weaponless Popsicle still doesn't kill the pilot :v:

I'm not sure how many AI pilots actually have bulwark, I think a lot of those examples you're looking at are because the AI almost always does a move-and-guard if it can't shoot directly at an enemy.

HBS are really keen for a competitive scene for the game, with Solaris Arena still on the cards and their recent hiring of network engineers to help them make sure that their multiplayer is cheatproof.

In preparation, lets smash some mechs into each other and learn the game.

Tournament Rules

1. Stock Mechs Only
2. 25 Million C-Bill Limit
3. This is a quickfire tournament, so you have 48 hours from the pairings being posted to organise and play your round.
4. Winner gets bragging rights

Also, I actually forgot to write the rest of this. So: old grogs etc, but it seems very likely that the BTech game and MechWarrior 5 are going to spur a lot of renewed interest in BattleTech tabletop, and so there'll probably be a lot of new players and/or returning non-grogs to play with, especially if you're in a larger metro area. So it'll probably be worth picking up the new box set, as the current BTech community is likely to represent only a chunk of that set's intended and likely audience.

Eh, I dunno about the new box set so much. The last one (and the one before it) were also all 3025 tech, minus a couple clan mechs that were added as a bonus as a make-good for the lovely quality control on the previous version.

Just a note that the new box isn't a new edition. It's a repackaging of the same Battletech that has existed for decades. The copy will be cleaner, but the rules are still very much rooted in old game design. That doesn't make it a bad game, it's just very slow and fiddly.

Actually, it's apparently just a 256x256 PNG with transparency, much like the pilot portraits. Probably best to make a version in both formats, though, until we know for sure on Tuesday.

Oh, for sure, it's still BattleTech, but the real point is that it's pretty obviously angled at releasing when the hype from BattleTech: Restoration and MechWarrior 5's releases will be at an absolute maximum. It's even using the new BTech logo debuting with this game. It's very likely to draw in a good number of new and returning folks, even if it's the same ol' BT, so it'll be a good time to jump in if folks want to give TT a shot.

Also, the BT thread in Trad fell into archives a while back. :ohdear:

Even though the new intro box is using Classic Battletech rules (for better or worse), it occurred to me while watching videos of the HBS game that Jordan and the team probably designed the game to work as a groundwork for establishing a streamlined version of the tabletop. Not fully modernized (because it's Battletech), but you can see the framework for a new edition there.

Stuff like the initiative phase system and the simplification of heat and what it does to the mech are both really good ideas that I could see translating to a tabletop game very well, yeah.

Overhead Arms quirk lets it blind-fire over cover. :pseudo:

It might just be the claw-to-mech ratio, but possibly in another way: The claw is huge compared to the Battle Armor, but a mech's hands (and hence fingers) tend to be rather small in comparison. I'm imagining the myomers of the hand just being torn out from the sheer force, or fingers snapping off and ruining their function that way if they're just those little bits found on some mechs.
