Listening to the soundtrack makes me want to find a copy of Unreal 1 and play through it again. Apparently there are community patches that brings the engine up to DX9 compatibility. e: It's on GoG.

Deus Ex is super loving clunky if you're comparing the gameplay to anything made in the last decade, but the story holds up 100%. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juMRdaHDxKw

Pretty much, yeah. But the clunkiness is lovable in a way unlike Invisible War. And the story is better than any of the sequels/prequels.

Even though I KNOW the graphics are low quality compared to nowadays I can't help but feel dissapointed. ^ Also why I refuse to watch Street Fighter, The Wizard and a few other movies. Don't want to ruin my childhood love. I'm on the shelf with watching 'Top Kids' - spent a long time trying to remember the title and eventually bought it on DVD, but nope it sits there in shrinkwrap unwatched.

It holds up with some video games I've tried to replay, but not with others. I replay Fallout 1 & 2 and the BG games every few years.

For the most part I don't actually mind the lovely graphics of old games, they still have a certain nostalgic feel that I like. The main problem for me with a lot of old games is the gameplay/controls. We're pretty spoiled these days with customisable controls and 20+ years of refining what works and what doesn't. A good example for me is early RTS games like the original Warcraft and Red Alert. I tried playing them not too long ago and it was just a slog because they have none of the conveniences of modern RTS games that I'm used to. Also early FPSs which were keyboard only, I'm way too used to mouselook now. If I replay something like Doom, I'll always use a modern source port.

I'm replaying the 3ds remake of Ocarina of Time, and it still holds up very, very well. Not having to play it on a 64 controller probably helps.

A while ago I picked up X-Wing and TIE Fighter from gog.com. I started the first mission, and before I even knew what was happening I had shunted weapon power to the shields, adjusted the recharge rates, gone to full throttle, targeted the nearest enemy fighter, and directed my wingmen to attack the others at will. I couldn't have told you what buttons I pressed to do this. I still can't. I just kind of... did it. Muscle memory from 20+ years ago kicked in. I guess flying an X-Wing is like riding a bike.

Maybe RTS didn't get it in the same way. The only problem I get with old late 90s /very early 2000s FPS games: they probably won't recognise controllers or extra mouse buttons. But if it's on the keyboard, it's fair game. If that happens now I feel blessed (and shouldn't, fully user defineable keys should be a solved problem) I bought the evil within a few years ago and it was a trainwreck of non defineable keys. F. RTSes avoided it by going extinct as a genre. Seriously though the attempts to make console RTSes have focused either on streamlined controls or stuff like voice commands. From what I've seen of it Halo Wars basically applies a FPS weapon selection wheel to unit commands and seems to work fluidly, while Tom Clancy's Endwar used voice commands that apparently worked okay. (There were promotional videos where they had trained a parrot to go "all tanks attack" and so on)

Lurking Haro posted:I put the blame for this mostly on Xinput. I'll take that over looking up the controls for a console version of a game then having to configure every button for every game like I did for games in the PS2 generation. Newer games just use Xbox controls at worst, and older games were usually made PC-first so it wasn't a problem. Japanese PC games from the early 2000s are a unique headache. I will agree that it's a vast improvement when the developer lets you choose what button icons you want, though.

Same with HL2, I made a serious attempt at beating it on 360 and got as far as the airboat level and just got completely lost/stuck. (I might be able to dig up what level I was on if Steam Cloud stored my save but, not sure)

Armacham posted:I guess FPS games with no map or objective markers are obsolete i mean it can work but the level design has to be really, really good to make it happen. in HL1 i was literally stuck in a cluster of rooms with no apparent exit and nothing triggering a cutscene or anything (I think there was supposed to be a ladder in a certain spot and it wasn't there for some reason?). in HL2 I ended up in a big open area with... no apparent exit except the place I came in from. meanwhile, Quake 1 has no map or objective markers, and I can navigate that game just fine because it's made by loving level design wizards who knew to put landmarks in places and have a reasonably obvious "flow" to their levels and executed that basically perfectly throughout the entire game

I definitely got lost a few times playing the first half-life again recently. I don't remember having that problem with Half-Life 2, which I thought had great level design, although I think I might remember the part you are actually talking about. I think you had to launch off a ramp to get to a new area.

It's typical lovely mid-90s FPS design - endlessly turning each corner just have have a bunch of enemies appear out of hidden cupboards.
