My humble account still hasn't coughed up a key yet, hopefully my robopunching is not delayed, please don't make me reinstall Front Mission Evolved again, HBS.

Front Mission Evolved is heretically good, fight me

tl;dr Battletech borrowed some Robotech designs for some mechs, Harmony Gold feels they have rights to those robots (and in fact all fightin' robots apparently) the court case is currently in the process of convincing HG to accept they don't in fact own those robot images.

i only know the tl;dr version myself so someone can fill in the details if they want but there was a company called Harmony Gold in the mid 80's that bought the licenses to distribute some anime cartoons in the united states. as part of battletech's development, they paid harmony gold for the license to use some of their anime mech designs for their games. after a few years the license lapsed, and harmony gold, which had decided being a copyright troll was much more lucrative than this silly japanese cartoon business, decided to lawyer up over the designs ever showing up in battletech games and anywhere else.

Some of the early mech designs were from an anime called Macross (and a few others). They paid someone they thought was the western rights holder for the rights to use the designs. Then in the 90's it turned into a huge legal clusterfuck since someone else held the rights etc.

Then it got loving stupid and Harmony Gold, the company who claimed to actually hold the rights, went on a 20+ year copyright troll thing where they tried to claim ownership on the designs even as they were changed etc. None of the mechs Harmony Gold claims to own are in this game so their suit was dismissed with predjudice.

Goombatta!
HG Licenses anime rights to three anime series, creates "Robotech" from the three series.

FASA Creates Battletech, licenses the images of certain mechs from the Anime series from someone in Japan. They get a licensed cartoon, which HG says infringes on their rights

HG throws a poo poo fit, despite questionable legal rights, sues FASA. This basically threatens to drag the company down just from legal expenses,FASA says "We'll sign something just to make you go away."

FASA and its later owners, WizKids/Catalyst redraw the mechs, or just use the outline. The mechs in question are referred to as the Unseen.

MechWarrior Online starts up, and they redraw the mechs, they're referred to as the "Reseen".

HG: sees that people are making money off Battletech again, and wants to rerun their strategy, they say "That's all infringing on our rights", hoping to get a payment to go away. (Mostly because all their attempts to monetize it has failed miserably).

Catalyst/MWO/HBS say "Uh, we redrew them so they don't really look like yours anymore.. and besides, your legal rights are.. questionable"

HG: WE OWN ALL GIANT ROBITS! PAY US NOW! WE SUES YOU.

HBS has gotten out of the suit, as HG has dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice (meaning they can't bring the claims again). They're still trying to sue Catalyst/MWO..

So, until the lawsuits grind to an end, the Unseen/Reseen Mechs are not in Battletech.

So, I have a question or two. it may involve spoilers and/or questions for either people who have watched streams or background-logic about the game, but just in case, I figured I'd give it a heads up due to potential spoilers.

I've been trying to avoid having early bits ruined, but ended up poking into Coh's stream out of curiosity, at least for the tutorial mission, and poked around a bit for non-spoilery bits, the mechlab, interface, that sort of thing.

So, its left a few lingering curiosities.

1)At what point do you actually get the Argo to play around with? All my peeks just involved a leopard, and paying other people to ferry you around.

2) there was a little random event segment involving the banks that own/lease the dropships, and I really liked the discussion amongst the party about what to do about it.
It culminated in a choice about how to talk to/approach your loan agent, to sweet talk them or remind them of the law, or another option I forgot, but it sends a message back to your creditors and establishes a relationship about your loan status going forward.

But that decision point makes me wonder just how deep this game is going to be. So, I saw this happen and went 'huh'.

Is this event a trap option, in which the only right move is to remind the other party of their obligations, and the other two are worse?

Or Is this basically an easy/medium/hard mode check in disguise?

Is the logic tree behind the event savvy enough to handle a two-faced betrayal, where the banks go 'oh, someone is trying to sweet talk me, clearly they're desperate and about to default, lets play nice but assemble the repo party behind the scenes' and later, surprise visits?

How are the bounty hunter attacks handled? Obligatory missions, extra enemies? Random events? The clever player might go 'but I WANT extra enemies to shoot and salvage their stuff', making the challenge mode actually potentially more fun.

Are there follow up events that play off your previous decisions?

Tldr: is this a title that should be approached with real-world or video game know how? inquiring minds wish to know!

We might have to wait until the game is out - I'm guessing it's not the same result for a given choice each time, but who knows.

It probably is worth $10 to me but I backed the kickstarter back when I was poor and there doesn't look to be a way to upgrade. I would really like the artbook and soundtrack but I would have to pay $50 to get it, I hope I am missing something.

As an addendum, HG recently sued the creators of the designs, Big West, in Japan and lost; the Japanese court found that HG only ever had the right to display the show, they had no rights to the designs therein. Even after the courts found that HG did not have any rights to the designs, they went ahead and decided to sue Piranha and Harebrained, claiming effectively that all mech designs were their IP. The suit currently looks very good for Piranha and Catalyst Game Labs, and very bad for HG- but nothing is finished just yet. Most of HG's legal motions to this point have been delaying actions, and it seems their hope was to get PGI/HBS/CGL to just settle in exchange for money, but now that they are not backing down, things look dicey for them.

Most citizens like living there. A large majority of the Capellan Confederation's population are not citizens. :ssh:

Liao and Kurita are the most centralised of the Successor States, and are totalitarian as all gently caress. The other three are a hell of a lot more laissez-faire about planetary governance, with Davion having the most "feudal" structure with various march lords and dukes, Steiner's higher political scene being a lot about money and economic success (like, you can flat-out get a noble title for improving the local economy to a large enough degree, and the biggest hammer the elected Estates General holds over the Archon's head is that they're the ones writing the national budget) and the FWL being kind of a mess because the various smaller policies in parliament and the Captain-Generals have spent a lot of the last few centuries at each others' throats.

Basically anything. It's usually either NAME NOUN (Burr's Black Cobras, Storm's Metal Thunder, Ace Darwin's Whipits, Carson's Renegades) or RANDOM COOL THING (Dismal Disinherited, Fighting Urukhai, Stalwart Support, Kraken Unleashed). Some use actual military-eque names (7th Hell's Brigade, 32nd Recon Combat Group, 51st Dark Panzer Jaegers, 4th Illcian Lancers), but those are mostly descended from actual units that went rogue/merc.
