There is a rental chain here that buys old rental cars after other rental agencies have used them up, hires an actual mechanic to fix them, and rents them out for basically half price. I've always been happy with their cars, and once in awhile they have a manual transmission because they found a good deal on it at auction.

bmw took full advantage of the inherent reliability of a straight 6 to introduce failure points everywhere else in the engine bay
