I'm out of town until Thursday with a laptop that is definitely under spec  It will probably be able to run the game but it will be at an atrocious framerate unless this game is really well optimized

You may want to check your notification emails to see if there's something fancy you have to do on Steam with the pre-loads. I got early review code and had to jump through a few hoops before I started downloading the actual game.

I never did much with megamek but one of my favorite memories from it was having a scout skid on wet asphalt and fly off the edge of the map and vanish into the mists forever

Fusion engines don't catastophically explode, but IIRC one of the stories by major BT author Mike Stackpole (the same guy who's writing the HBS novellas) had this occur, and it's been called stackpoling in the BT community ever since. They even put out an optional rule in one of the BT rulebooks to allow players to say "physics be damned: I want everything to go boom".

My first complaint: The description of the Capellan Confederation says it is a "socialist police state" however in the hover text for Capellan Confederation, it says that citizens have "total subservience of the individual to the state" and literally "service guarantees citizenship" which are textbook foundational philosophies of fascism, not socialism

Am I just crazy, but is every selectable character portrait an Asian woman? I tried to choose the closest thing I could find to a hard-rear end, scarred black dude, but even loving around with options, she/he still looks like an Asian woman. They all look like hot girls.

So, some tips if you want to use a custom crest: The only way I've found so far is to replace an existing logo, so be sure to save a back-up just in case you want to revert. The game seems to hang on launch if you add a crest with a number one higher than the currently existing crests. There's probably a list of available crests that tells the game what to pick but I wasn't able to find it. Crests also need to be upside-down but not reversed.
