Game doesn't appear to support ultrawide screen resolutions (3440x1440) in Fullscreen mode.

So it was supposedly preloaded on steam, but when I opened it I get a “preparing to launch Battletech” box that takes forever to load. I rebooted steam and it was still there. After an hour it finally completed, but now the bar is empty again telling me it will be ready to launch in 10 hours as if nothing happened

Well, so far my favourite bit of the game is where it crashed with an access violation after the tutorial mission, but before it saved that I'd finished the tutorial mission. Think I might wait a day or two before diving deeper.

"Service guarantees citizenship" is only textbook fascism if you've read bad blogs about Starship Troopers: neither Italy nor Spain nor Portugal nor Germany had that as a requirement.

"Total subservience of the individual to the state" is a classic dictatorship model regardless of political foundation. Long story short, the CapCon a command economy (unlike the other Houses), so broadly "socialist". that it also features a service = citizenship model is not a commentary on how socialist states (or any states) are now, but rather a fictional construct for a fictional state 1,000 years in the future, where no state has a 1:1 analogue with any modern political construct (remember, this is a universe where space feudalism is the predominant system).

1. command economies are not socialist

2. subservience of the individual to the state is distinct from deferring to state authority, and in context of how the Caps are presented it is fascist in that every individual's value correlates to their contribution military mobilization of the state

"complete mobilization of society under a totalitarian one-party state as necessary to prepare a nation for armed conflict and to respond effectively to economic difficulties."

The game downloads, then unpacks (which takes a while), then installs (which is usually fairly quick), but it will look like it's doing nothing while it's unpacking. Just let it do its thing, I made the mistake of interrupting it but it is doing something as long as the green 'disk space' line is showing.

Complaints about pacing are justified. There's so many tiny beats where it is like "why am I waiting an extra second here? And here too? Ugh, I can read what the date is way faster than this..." I'm only on the second tutorial mission and I can tell that this is going to annoy me quite a bit. :(

There are solid arguments for Marik, Davion, and Steiner. Outworlds and Canopus for periphery states maybe? Though Outworlds Alliance isn't really reflected at all in the origin story in-game.

(I hope this game doesn't need much, broadband-internet-wise, since my ping is such trash. I assume for the campaign it's just the standard Paradox "Please log in..." DRM stuff.)

Not for the entire duration of the setting. At this exact moment, Steiner/Lyran Commonwealth is probably the least morally repugnant state you could root for out of the major powers, on account of them not actively loving over their own people (Davion Outback; Liao's entire class system; Kurita's deeply entrenched misogyny), and also being a functional state that is not at all getting clowned all the gently caress over by random groups of mercenaries for shits and grins (Marik).

Outworlds Alliance is the next best thing to the platonic ideal of "Benevolent Neglect: Government Edition" for the Periphery so that could also work.

That's why I said "broadly" (and put socialist in quotes). They're obviously referring to the Cold War era mindset that the game was originally created in and to which to some degree holds today, where having a command economy was one of the hallmarks of a communist state. Whatever the term you wish to use for it, outside of wartime it's considered a far-left practice. The fascist states didn't even do command economies very well during times of war; hence their poo poo production capabilities.

"complete mobilization of society under a totalitarian one-party state as necessary to prepare a nation for armed conflict and to respond effectively to economic difficulties."

Without specifying what states and periods you're talking about, your contrasting of subservience vs. deference is not very meaningful. In terms of BT (which I'd prefer to focus on), it's worth noting that the CapCon is also the only clear loser in what has been a three-century war. They've lost more than half their territory in that period, and have resorted to increasingly draconian measures just to survive; I'm not sure that they've always been that way. All the Houses have had their nominally standard political structures warped to some degree to deal with the Succession Wars (see also the Free Worlds League, which doesn't have a permanent Captain-General as part of its standard political structure, but appointed one early on "for the duration of the emergency", which has just happened to have lasted 300 years, to the regular ire of its Parliament).

this is actually a really good thing, to sort of take this on a tangent. Space Goodpeople vs Space Badpeople can work in the short term but it's superficial and will expire pretty fast - but complicated factions make for a better setting to actually engage with. BT does not always succeed here, but there's at least the attempt being made.

as far as this game is concerned, which is to say ignoring almost all of that, the only faction that I'd even consider for background is Steiner because they believe 100-ton assaults make the best lance. For every purpose. And that's obviously correct :colbert:
