The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes, look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
I know I SHOULD have just lived with the consequences of getting Dekker and his Spider one-shotted by a DFA from the Shadow Hawk on Three Years Later (or, for that matter, losing my protag and his mech to an ammo explosion cascade after the turrets indirect-fired him to gently caress) but that felt like a death spiral waiting to happen. I at least want to start the "real game" before going in a hole - hope there's a skip tutorial option implemented soon.

(it probably wouldn't have felt so tedious if I hadn't watched so many pre-release streams and seen all that already.)

Anyway, liking things so far now that they've gotten rolling and I'm really excited to come to grips with this game. As soon as I figure out how to keep it from threatening to melt my video card, yikes. Vsync time I guess?

Also, are Locusts, like, worth bothering to field at all? I got one shot up on my first contract (deployed it to replace the Blackjack that was in the shop after the timeskip mission) and now I'm staring at it in the Mechlab going ehhhhh do I even want to repair this just as a spare machine or should I just sell it as a scrap heap and save time?

Locusts are hooot garbage and have no redeemable qualities. Especially the MG version.

So, this really isn't a campaign for Spiders. Dekker got his ride pretty badly shot up, and the three enemy Spiders I met so far all died instantly. Number one got a PPC to the dome from Glitch, number two got its center torso punched out by Behemoth and number three got focus-fired by my lance hard enough in one turn that there was basically just a smoking pair of legs left when the dust settled. :stonklol:

He managed to get a leg shot off and his center torso opened in mine, because loving everybody focus-fired him.

I slapped an LRM-20++ and two LRM-5s into that Centurion and the very first thing it did was straight-up kill two 'Mechs (and in the next mission blew the hunch straight off a Hunchback and stability-killed an Orion by letting me knock it on its rear end until the pilot died). LRMs good.

I mean, it helps that I found a g2/p2/guts2/tactics8 ex-ComStar pilot named "Wolfman" in the Mechwarrior Shop. It took me all of one mission to get her other stats up to reasonable levels.

edit: I named that Centurion "Stumpy" because it doesn't have anything at all in the autocannon arm.

You want a Tactics Gunner to reduce indirect fire penalty and increase chance to hit and a mech that can boat enough LRMs to be scary like a Catapult. The accuracy dropoff at medium range on LRMs is pretty bad and really apparent on the default bracket build mechs so I don't think just tossing an LRM10 onto a medium range loadout is worthwhile.

I find a dedicated LRM mech to be really effective because of how good stability damage is for ensuring that you can kill or seriously cripple something in a turn when you need to. Massed lrms, a punch or AC for guaranteed knockdown, and called shots from your last two Mechs goes a hell of a long way.

The game will just go real savage real quick if you're more of a yolo GOTTA GO FAST type of player (which is what I usually am with lights). Once you get used to abusing init to limit who can shoot you + bracing/showing only left or right side if you're not in cover you can soak up vast amounts of damage usually.

Well, just had my first tactical withdrawal when I was put up against 2 full, fully armored lances at once in week 19 - 2 heavies, 1 light, rest mediums. When the terrain was a bowl with my guys starting at the bottom.

The difficulty of missions seems super variable, since this was a 2 1/2 skull contract and I'd just done another 2 1/2 that was just 3 quarter armor heavies, total cakewalk. I kinda like that actually - always have to be wary.

This is a steam thing, it might be faster to delete your pre-load and install fresh from a new download than it is to wait for the pre-load to decrypt.

I’m only up to the moon mission that’s supposed to get you the Argo, but I’m finding the Spider (and even the Locust really) okay as long as I can keep them at four chevrons and dance around near other light mechs—sometimes popping in to get the last melee hit in on a medium. Got a Panther though so maybe that’ll be my light from now on? It doesn’t fill the same battlefield role, so I’ll have to change my doctrine.

I hope the tutorial is skippable somehow in future playthroughs.

Took me a bit to realize that destroyed components stick around on your mech, even after you rebuild the limb, and aren’t replaced automatically—I thought rebuilding the limb would also buy new components from the store and fit them and was confused why my Blackjack had one red ML and AC/2 after getting the arm blown off and rebuilt.

So who else missed twelve shots and four melee and death from aboves in a row on that lovely little light mech and Shadow Hawk in the first mission of the game and hosed a pilot and all their mechs up trying to kill them on endless 80%+ attacks

Honestly, for the Moon mission Quickdraw I just first separated them from their medium weight teammate (they split around one of the large pieces of terrain) and proceeded to core the medium with a center torso called shot, then withdrew behind cover and set up an ambush. Reserved all my mechs until they'd moved, then DFA'd on top of them to max out their stability bar. Proceeded to knock it over with the next mech, and then had the remainder of that round plus the entirety of the next to just shoot its legs off.

Advice generally depends on what you find fun. When fighting greater numbers it's really helpful to either engage them in small groups or force the bigger group to come to you. Take advantage of hills and try to keep one between you and the advancing enemy, so that they'll skyline themselves in 2s-3s rather than letting 8 'Mechs shoot your four.

Knocking a 'Mech down makes them easy to eliminate so having someone with Sensor Lock and a second person with a big LRM launcher to floor their stability is extremely helpful, especially if you can follow it up with an SRM or autocannon attack to knock them down. Then your last 'Mech can blow off a leg or a dangerous side torso or just core them if you need them dead now.

If they've got heavy enough armor to survive a couple of turns of being knocked on their asses you can kill the pilot with knockdown damage and salvage the machine.

LRMs are no joke, but I'd say the LRM-10 specifically is the worst launcher. Two LRM-5s weigh less and give you two chances to shoot the enemy in the head (which is what you want light launchers for), while the -15 and -20 are much better at making targets unstable and costing them their evasion bonuses / setting them up for knockdown and murder.

evilmiera posted:

If it's the -4G, use your morale ability to blow off the left torso (the one without the Hunch) because that's where all the ammo is. That completely neuters the Hunchback without risking damage to its big, expensive gun. If it's the -4P blow off the right torso because those medium lasers are just going to clutter up your salvage screen anyway.
