Actually I realized I do have one loving huge complaint.

Mechs stomping on vehicles dont stomp anywhere near them. This is UNACCEPTABLE

HEAVYARMS
Oh I hit my first wall for Merc missions. 3 skull convoy assault where the defenders are 4 mediums (zzz) in the bottom of a valley and the convoy had a PPC tank, LRM carrier making GBS threads out 80 missiles a turn and a Demolisher preventing me from just running in and stepping on things.

Needless to say after losing all my poo poo and trying it again and still losing all my poo poo I'm gonna avoid that until I can run at least a full Heavy lance.

16 hours in and I realized that if I don't like the missions a system has, I can just move to a different one, with different difficulty levels too.

Don't be me and slowly grind yourself to death on missions that are out of your league :smith:

Did the moon mission and salvaged the Quickdraw, went in all stock swapping out the Spider for a LCT-1M. The Shadowhawk, Vindicator and Blackjack are plenty to do most of the missions up to that point. I dropped in 3 mechs in to a bunch of missions because Decker was in medbay for a week again. The Blackjack is really good for it's weight in this game, like it does overheat but it can put out a tremendous amount of damage with the changes to AC2's. Just don't just mash alpha strike over and over again.

Trying to decide if stop the convoy or destroy the base missions are the worst. In the convoy missions you kind need to take 2 lights just just run down the tanks as they flee and a couple of heavy-ish med to kill the defender. Just feels 1 missed shot from failure all the time. However the level the base ones are just 5 or 6 turns of clicking buildings standing around doing nothing.

For what it's worth Multi-shot is the clutch skill of the game so far. Glitch in the Vindicator has murdered so many people so far. The threat at every range thing which is traditionally quite poor works fine here when there are vehicles cutting about, 1 PPC shot into that tank, LRM's at that stripped light, laserss on the other tank etc.

A loving LRM tank somehow managed to annihilate my Blackjack in a single volley, destroying both arms, both side torsos, the center torso and nailing a leg's jump jet. Commander's out for 109 days and refitting that trash can will cost 300k and take 68 days.

it's good for you
Generally I haven't found the game difficult at all, I lost my main character on the first mission and just now on another story mission and those are the only losses so far. I think it's the third story mission. You have to destroy two lances worth of mechs while assaulting a base full of turrets and kill escaping vehicles that are carrying ammunition. I brought a bad setup and I refused to blow up any ammo stashes. The setup was an almost entirely melee Dragon, a Jager with too many guns, a random medium with too many guns, and a Kintaro with no armor and 3 LRMs.

I tried it three times and finally beat it on the third try. Bunch of time wasted on those two failures. It came down to the wire with my character getting his dragon cored out against the last two enemy mechs, and everyone was just meleeing each other with barely alive chassis. The armorless LRM boat ran in at the end to help with the brawl.

It feels like you can get pretty far in this game even with terrible setups.

Got a Quickdraw as my first Heavy (Not the one from the Argo as Glitch blew its torso off by shooting it through the legs when it was downed. At this point I have 1-2 pieces of 5 different heavies). Trying to work out a good build for it, fluctuating between 3 large lasers as a sniping platform, or SRMs and 4MLs to brawl with along with max armour.

So if the goal is to capture a mech, is it better/easier to go for destroying both legs instead of going for hard-to-hit headshots?

I've just completed the Newgrange Dropship assault mission and I still only have one heavy, the Dragon. I have lots of pieces of other ones including 2 Jaegermech pieces, 2 Quickdraw pieces, and 2 Cataphract pieces. From what I've heard from others they just come slowly unless you luckout and headshot something big I guess. Also where are you guys getting melee modifications I haven't seen any in the store so far :(. My current "A team" lance is A Dragon, 2x Centurions and a Trebuchet. It's starting to feel a little light though I think I might spend 1.2 mil on Assembling another Dragon since you can purchase pieces for it on Smithon. At least I've got about 6 mil in the bank.

Headshots are largely a matter of luck, even a called shot just raises the chance from 1% to 2%. Most of the time I go for legging, unless the target already ate a pilot wound from a random headshot. In those cases it can be worth it to fish for extra knockdowns and side torso destructions for additional wounds to kill the pilot entirely.

headshots are unreliable at the best of times.
what i usually do is try to pilot-kill it by a combination of three or four instances of:
1. lucky headshot
2. destroy left/right torso
3. ammo explosion
4. knockdown

or you could just leg the 'mech and hope you run into one later to complete the set.

I'm currently running a hunting team dedicated to bringing in all those delicious heavy pieces and knockdowns are your friend. 2 LRM platforms, 1 SRM platform and an AC20 Called Shot master to pop right and left torsos. Sandpapering with missiles is the best way to knock someone down without blowing out their center and has the benefit of frequently hitting the head thanks to the volume of missiles shat out. If you accidentally core a heavy you want and run into it again, go for the legs instead of trying to get all 3 pieces of salvage again. The difference between 3 and 4 pieces is minimal, while the difference between 2 and 3 is huge.

Yeah it's pretty straight forwards I thought. For my Glitch and Behemoth both took a wound but the Mechs were light damage really. I sounds like people are over extending themselves so when the Quickdraw comes in they can't just alpha the Shadowhawk that's with it, then it in turn.

Do story missions until you get the argo.

Also, protip if you want to guarantee getting more mech salvage is to destroy as many components as possible. If you are getting 14 pieces of salvage and there are 14 or less pieces of total salvage, you get all of it, even if it is all high value mech pieces.

kiva did a twitter post on that: assassinations are harder, and there's a variant as well, so you probably got a bad roll.
