I finally managed to get my MY ANIMES lance by, uh, manually overwriting literally every ks backer and regular ronin file with my custom characters. The vast majority of which are dupes to maximize the chance I could fill my lance out early on.

And after that, I went into the simGameConstants.json file and changed DefaultRoninHiringChance from 0.08 (8% any given pilot in the hiring hall will be a special character) to 0.80. This only applies to new campaigns but thankfully someone on reddit figured out how to skip the tutorial battles.

It'd be nice to see HBS patch in a "customize mechwarrior/upload portait" feature. You know, after most of the actually-a-genuine-problem technical wrinkles get sorted out. After all this isn't a huge priority and, obviously, where there's a will there's a way when it comes to getting around the limitations.

Note that cheats like changing weapon files and shops .jsons to allow you to buy lostech also only applies to new campaigns too, but that's a slippery slope.

DEEP FRIED DIARRHEA
Gone through the SLDC Cache Raid and I'm enjoying the game quite a bit. I still pine for a game set during the Refusal War or the Invasion (that has you playing as the actual cool team instead of DURR SPACE FEUDALISM! like the last fifteen years of BTech games) but maybe Battletech: Operation Revival will come out in a year or two and then I'll be a happy clam.

I'm finding the difficulty curve for the game to be extremely choppy, although I suppose That's Battletech! 90% of the game is extremely easy (like surprisingly easy, I'm not the best tactical player in the world and I'm cruisin through this) and then everyone now and then it's Two lances turn two get ready for some ppPPC ppPPOUNDING! I have a suspicion that the generic missions have some bugs, the really noticeable one (that I'm 99% sure is a bug) is on Battle missions that have reinforcements, the reinforcements will spawn instantly when you engage the main force. And then at the end Darius will go "I just detected reinforcements" after you've killed everything. Thanks Darius! Let me tell you poking your head around a corner and facing down 3 heavies, 2 mediums, and 3 lights when you are rocking a 200 ton drop is pretty wild. Other than that the AI on Escort/Defense missions is pretty wonky and can just arbitrarily bone you, which hasn't cost me a mission yet but it's only a matter of time.

The story missions are really well done however. They've been a good challenge every time and have some neat set-pieces. This latest one wasn't very hard but it was really cool, my favorite so far.

I did some grinding after capturing Victoria and salvaged a trio of Thunderbolt SE's that I just adore, they are such workhorses. I've got two of them set up as brawlers and the third as a sniper and all three are running a LRM 15++ as well. With my new Assault acquisition (replacing an AC 20+++ Orion I was running) it's going to be a mean lance. I'm starting to hit enough of a critical mass of LRM's that consistent knockdowns are a very real thing. It really changes up strategy, it's a lot of fun. Most of my lance having at least one set of LRM tubes means I can play a really defensive game if I need to as well. Kinda sad I'm starting to transition to Assaults now and I still haven't seen a single Cataphract, I love those derpy dudes. The initiative system does give you a compelling reason to run non-Assaults though, so we'll see what I end up doing.

Yeah I wish they didn't constantly ramp up the skull count. Sometimes I want to just go stomp on some lights. My first mission with my highlander was humbling. It was a really mountain heavy polar map and I spawned in a valley with mountain walls on all sides and tons of ppcs srms and lrms outside waiting for me. I had medusa and behemoth get cored trying to break out and had to finish the mission with just glitch in a sniper jager and a me in my highlander. Managed it without any damage to the highlander but got poo poo for loot and medusa and behemoth are in med bay for 3 months.

So far the only mission I've noped out of was a two-skull mission. Normally, this means a mix of mediums and vehicles and maybe a heavy or two with shoddy armour. This mission saw me up against a full heavy lance with a medium lance as back-up, and since it was a Cappellan force that meant full armour. Screw that, I'm out.

An extremely useful thing that seems easy to overlook: The morale ability Precision Strike automatically knocks the target's initiative down a phase. Which can be incredibly valuable when you want to prevent a powerful enemy mech from wrecking your poo poo. For example, one time an enemy Hunchback ran in from out of hiding and ended within AC/20 range of my lance (which at the time was entirely mediums). Normally, he'd been able to get off at least one shot even if I focused all my fire on him, which obviously would have been incredibly dangerous. But by making my first shot against him a Precision Strike, his initiative was lowered, and my entire lance had the opportunity to unload into him before it was his turn to act.

Highlander owns holy poo poo. That thing almost does too much damage and can make it hard to not kill things sometimes. I find myself turning off all but one of my weapons just so I don't accidentally core the bastard I am trying to capture.

Helps if you strip some M lasers off the starting blackjack to add some more armor I've found.

The Blackjack wants two AC/5s and basically nothing else. Maybe a pair of JJs for maneuvering to firing positions, and/or maybe a pair of MLas for extra close-range firepower, but I've had great success just using it as a ballistics turret with legs.

I don't know why Glitch is consistently a monster for everyone in this thread, but she totally just saved my rear end with a complete bullshit of a headshot on an undamaged Jenner with 4 pips of evasion. I was in a situation where I was just barely hanging on and was super close to failure cascading.

Then I failed a defense mission because 3 lances of lights spawned at once from three different directions and I didn't have the firepower to flyswat them fast enough.

6R Wolverine or either Shadow Hawk with an AC/5, 2 SRM4s, 1 Heat Sink, 5 Jump Jets. MLaser or extra armor with the last ton. The Wolverine can mount the AC/5 on the arm for the extra accuracy.

I wonder if it's possible to bypass the "needs a 3d portrait" flag by flagging a starter pilot as a Ronin, as all the pilots with custom art portraits seem to be labelled Ronin in their json files. That would be an easier way to put a few extra custom pilots on the roster without having to do a great big overwrite rigamarole.

You'll still need to change the version registry file to get the game to recognize a new asset or json file though.

Progress the story till you get the Argo, then the upgrades that boost your Tech rating. In the starter ship you only have 3 tech points, which is agonizingly slow.

Still takes a few weeks for major overhauls though.

E: you can also mess around with the skirmish mechlab and make a lance of customs to play against an AI team of stock models. That way you don't have to commit campaign time to experimenting.

Due in 3rd Quarter of this year, unfortunately. But there will be two "starter boxes", which is a pretty smart decision I think... a cheap one and a normal one:

https://bg.battletech.com/books/upcoming-releases/

Cheap one is gonna be $19.99 and includes:

quote:

  • 2 high-quality, fully assembled (unpainted) miniatures:
  • Griffin
  • Wolverine

  • 24-page Quick Start Rulebook
  • 8 Quick Start Record Sheets
  • 48 page fiction novella by William H. Keith, Jr., a prequel to the Gray Death Legion saga featuring Carlyle’s Commandos and Durant Carlyle; only available in the Beginner Box.
  • 4-page Instant Guide to the Inner Sphere
  • 4 Pilot Cards
  • One all-new full-color paper map (hexed, double-sided)
  • Punchboard of additional BattleMechs
  • 2 dice

And the more expensive one is:

quote:

  • 8 high-quality, fully assembled (unpainted) miniatures:
  • Awesome
  • BattleMaster
  • Catapult
  • Commando
  • Locust
  • Shadow Hawk
  • Thunderbolt
  • Wolverine

  • 48-page Rulebook
  • 16-page Record Sheet Booklet
  • 48 page fiction novella by William H. Keith, Jr., a prequel to the Gray Death Legion saga featuring Carlyle’s Commandos and Durant Carlyle; only available in the A Game of Armored Combat box.
  • 16-page Universe Primer
  • 8 Pilot Cards
  • 8 Alpha Strike Cards
  • 2 heavy-stock reference sheets
  • Two all-new 18” x 22” full-color paper maps (hexed, double-sided)
  • Punchboard of additional BattleMechs and terrain
  • 2 dice

The new minis look quite good (for CGL, anyway).

Rules are unchanged. The only real change are the new miniatures, and I assume some of the rulebooks/record sheets will have a new layout. Maps are probably the same?

I also don't remember if the old core set included Alpha Strike stuff, but this one apparently does alongside normal Classic Battletech rules.

If you wanted to start out on the game though and don't want to wait for the official box, you could always just buy some legal-grey-area sculpts based on MWO models, print out your own hex maps, and use the free Quick Start Rules PDF (or just pick up a copy of Total Warfare, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're already familiar with the quickstart rules or have played MegaMek).

Could also get the old minis from the Alpha Strike lance packs or direct from Iron Wind Metals/Ral Partha Europe. Quality on both of those are mediocre at best though.
