Rules are unchanged. The only real change are the new miniatures, and I assume some of the rulebooks/record sheets will have a new layout. Maps are probably the same?

I also don't remember if the old core set included Alpha Strike stuff, but this one apparently does alongside normal Classic Battletech rules.

If you wanted to start out on the game though and don't want to wait for the official box, you could always just buy some legal-grey-area sculpts based on MWO models, print out your own hex maps, and use the free Quick Start Rules PDF (or just pick up a copy of Total Warfare, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're already familiar with the quickstart rules or have played MegaMek).

Is Alpha Strike where those pilot cards come from?

Sorry to ask here, but I couldn't find an active TG thread

Yep.

The old Battletech TG thread dipped off into archives last fall, unfortunately.

Hoping to God that Jordan and CGL hash something out to adapt the HBS system over to tabletop as a new edition though. It totally feels like it's something HBS kept in mind when designing this game.

I feel like repairs and especially refits shouldn't take as long, or they should be on separate timers. I have this SHD I'm refitting for the last 4 financial periods, cause I keep having to repair 1-2 mechs every mission and bumping down the refit in the schedule. If I get a particularly tough mission, I have to fast forward for a month before I can take the next one, and the Shadowhawk falls further behind.

Is it just a case of git gud(er) ?

you need max armor and play it slow ith guts 5 on your guys, you basically need a few missions that pay out cbills without any taking internal damage

I'm still not real sure how I should be leveling my mechwarriors. My default is that gunnery is the only tree that seems genuinely useful in all situations, but that's probably the wrong approach.

Does anyone have a rundown of what skills synergize with which types of mechs and/or weapons?

Locusts die if literally anything looks at them funny but Firestarters are still my favourite lights and it's not even close. As long as you can keep your evasion high or stick to flanking mechs that are already engaged, all those flamethrowers can ruin a hostile's day (especially if that hostile went energy-heavy), make the rest of your lance's life a lot easier, and even help with racking up the pilot injuries for more efficient salvage.

Tactics 2, good for a dedicated scout who runs around in a lighter mech than the rest of the crew or anyone in a heavy or Assault.

Piloting 2, extremely good for anyone piloting a mech with huge alpha struoe potential but not a lot of armor

Guts 1, the go to skill for anyone who is going to be piloting a mid-range tanky mech since it lets them shoot and get a defensive buff

Heres my builds including a Dragon that have worked well for me so far. Though don't be like me and put the ammo with the guns, I just put it opposite to aesthetically balance the mech in the lab but its 100% mechanically a bad idea.

quote:

So I figured I'd show off some of my builds, both to help people who are new and to get feedback from some more experienced people.

First the builds that carried me in the early game

1) Shadowhawk

I switched between using it like this or with a Large Laser, another SRM6 and more armor. Both designs were workhorses for the early game, I don't think I ever had a Shadowhawk go down.

2) Hunchback

Basically vanilla, but with some added Jumpjets. Solid performer overall.

3) Centurion

Absolute MVP of the early game for me. It taught me how good a dedicated LRM unit is and it was the last Medium I was actively using before I managed to cobble together a full team of Heavies.

And now Mid-game (3-3.5skull missions)

1) Black Knight

My First Heavy and a mainstay on my team because of it. I made it a little more heat neutral and increased the DPS by dropping the large lasers for mediums.

2) Dragon

Not the greatest Heavy mech, but you can get a guaranteed one pretty early on. I use it as a spotter for the rest of the squad with its slightly above average movement, and it packs an okay punch.

3) Jagermech

Much like the Centurion, the new MVP of my lance. Its hilariously deadly and never even gets scratched in battle. A++ would always recommend an LRM boat

4) Thunderbolt

Easily the most deadly of my Heavies, I like this little dude quite a bit. Basically just use it like an upgraded Hunchback.

nah, clan stuff was nice because it was a fundamentally different play style altogether and that's good

the problem is that tabletop battletech is such a math game of moving a specific amount of hexes to have the highest evade percent you can get without losing accuracy that the faction group all about moving fast with good weapons and paper armor is, in fact, to good.

They'd be hot garbo in this, though, as even with all the evasion pips in the world you aren't regularly going to be rolling 9% to hit.

edit: (well, some of the clan variants were stupid, but the only outright op one was the clan pulse laser)

Were you on a desert map by any chance? It highlights in red where the drop ship is going to land but it's hard to see on desert planets I think. It think it also says something like your mech may be in danger when it means destroyed utterly.

Apparently I lucked into the god strat for this fight which is bringing 3 LRM boats and a bulwark frontliner with JJs, jump up onto the little ridge right in front of you for vision on turn 1 and then you can immediately drop LRMs on one of the ammo crates in the main base area, destroying 2 turrets and 1 mech and crippling a second mech. Then you park all your LRM boats in the water and blow everything up.
