I guess I was late to the GDP discussion. Yeah, this thread is more level headed than the "When Chinar rules the world" and "We must be more like Chinar, look ho much they get donnnnnnne" choirs which are still popular in many western countries.

While the latter seems like straight ignorance, what's the former motivated by? I forget the word, something akin to 'I live there, therefore all the problems I know of come from there and thus the US must fall'. Envy? Unwarranted self-importance? One of those people Gilbert and Sullivan claim will not be missed?

It's a product of a combination of orientalism and racial theory that have colored Western views of China for centuries.

So a lady I know was telling me about how back in China she had a pet duck that was super smart and house trained and could follow some basic commands. She said it was a special type of duck they locally called a Canton duck. A red crown, red feet, and a blue and green body. Large, almost goose sized. Google is not helping me find any pictures of this bird. Searching for canton duck only gives food pictures, anything china and duck related generally only gives food pictures and info. Does anyone know what species of duck this was? This would have been in a rural-ish area outside of HK.

Sounds like not a duck at all, but a waterfowl called a Muscovy duck, I could be wrong. They come in various colours, are cantankerous, I think technically they are not ducks or waterfowl but in their own little section. Fairly big. There's a bird similar to that on this page: http://www.danheller.com/santa-barbara-zoo.html Scroll down for 'purple bird with red crown' Not sure if it's a duck though. You might have to ask pet island, if there's anyone left posting in PI. Otherwise it could be a mutated duck. Not a joke about pollution, that sort of thing happens.

I even joined a loving bird identification forum and that's their best guess. She kept saying it had a big red HAT and gestured to the top of her head, while muscovy ducks more have gross red flesh masks. We also have a lot of them at the petting zoo's duck area, and she knows it well and said she never saw her duck species there. It looks like they can vary a lot in colour though, the ones at our petting zoo are all white but they come in all sorts of colours and patterns.

You know people get cosmetic surgery for their expensive and rare Arowana fish. Maybe they were dyeing a duck with pigments to make it pretty and rare looking. Speaking of, how truthful is this book? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25987033-the-dragon-behind-the-glass It goes on about arowana's being collectors items and rich asian people showing them off. Is that really a thing? Or maybe it's more south asian than china.

Doomsday answer would be if the states became corporatist semi-nations vying for power

I would much prefer the EU take charge but that's not happening as they don't have remotely enough military muscle to do enable it to assert a "Policing" role to keep the seas international. But EU can be pretty effective economically. A big thing a lot of people forget about China Vs US is that China is alone. The US has the almost the entire western and technological powers it can potentially call on if it isn't some really stupid poo poo like the 2001 infinite war or Trump. The US can't be as big as it is without friends. Trump is the worse president based on this alone. The UN and State Department are easily the most powerful foreign policy tools they have. Oh god, no one should wish for a great power struggles of old. The US is hosed up but gently caress off about importing or bowing to Chinese governance. I don't even want their movies.

Yeah it's less the US and more the (relatively) functional alliance system the US created. China has no friends, it's just a giant screaming baby that someone allowed to get its hands on a knife and now you have a screaming knifebaby to deal with.

Why just memorising for the test might not be the best idea https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Northern_Airlines_Flight_6901?wprov=sfla1 quote:Another factor was the crew's lack of proficiency in English. When the GPWS issued an aural alarm, the captain asked his first officer what the words "Pull up" meant. The first officer replied that he did not know. Consequently, the pilots ignored the warnings and failed to correct their excessive rate of descent, causing the plane to strike power lines and a wall before coming down in a field.
