Is there no way to speed the game up? Having to watch every ponderous animation and wait for every attack to resolved is a huge amount of time. I already turned everything I could in settings down or off.

Turn on Debug Mode. There's a 'speed up animations' button that doesn't have any gameplay effects, so you get all the challenge without waiting five minutes for enemy attacks to finish.

Edit: It may turn off steam Achievements, though.

yeah, it works pretty well (at 1680x1000 resolution and lowered graphical settings). i had severe framerate stutter on the second tutorial mission, but only on that misson and no crashes.

I am on the Internet.
Just finished a mission where the first heavy I've ever seen, a Grasshopper, spawned on top of a building and couldn't move. my lights outranged almost everything it had and I plinked it for about 25 turns till I managed by pure luck to take the head off. No arms, no sides, everything else in the red.

I could only choose 2 salvage.

So is there a list of good stock mechs I should be keeping my eye out for?

Best mediums appear to be the Centurion CN9-A (great LRM boat, equal-highest max tonnage medium), either model of Hunchback (silly damage potential, equal-highest max tonnage medium), and either model of Shadow Hawk (fast, great melee, good overall performance). Best heavies are the Grasshopper (bonkers in melee), Black Knight (loads of energy hardpoints, good in melee, equal-highest max tonnage heavy) and either model of Orion (good hardpoints, equal-highest max tonnage heavy). The Cata, Jager, and Thunderbolt are more common and are competent. I dunno about assaults yet, but stats suggest the Awesome, Stalker, Highlander, Atlas, and King Crab are all good. The initiative system generally biases towards mechs at the top of their weigh class; there's not much separating, say, an Orion and Victor, but the Orion will get to move earlier. Straight max tonnage is good for sniper or LRM boat builds since you generally won't care about speed or melee as much as the sheer amount of hardware you can fit in.

The way Argo’s hab pods fold in to provide gravity under thrust is a tiny detail that I love and really shows some good attention to detail on the devs part.

I will say this, Glitch was the pilot I lost in the jabroni savescum I mentioned earlier. I can't lose Glitch.

And watching The Expanse has given me a whole new appreciation for artifical gravity in sci-fi.

So is there any reason to ever mount a PPC if your mech can mount an AC5 instead? Is the PPC debuff really worth it? I don't really notice it when I get hit by one.

Is this better?
Anyone figured out how to skip the splash screens at launch and skipping the opening movie automatically? Bad enough that the gameplay is roughly 18% wasted time waiting for things to move/blowup/interpolate, but I have to wait a good 25 seconds just to get to the front end. Give me my seconds/minutes/hours back!

ACs get a penalty to hit if you fired them the previous round, I believe.

The "only fits energy weapons" Awesome variant isn't so great, either you run with longer ranged energy weapons and have to dedicate an absurd amount of weight to heatsinks or you go full medium laser boat and have to slowly crawl into range to actually do a decent amount of damage.

This game's progression is kinda weird. As you get farther along, you start fielding heavier mechs with more weapons. Your enemies also field heavier mechs, so the extra damage is kinda balanced out by the higher durability all around. The main difference is that now everything moves agonizingly slowly. I miss the days when even my front-line tank mechs could zip around reasonably well.

The opportunity to chump on stupid Clanners by leading them into melee ambushes? Sign me up.

Though no rush, it's still amusing to see the hardcore BT players whine about not having their EZ win Clan tech while still squawking about how much better players they are.

You forgot the worst part - no heat mechanics. Double heatsinks utterly ruined BT making a sharp divide between 'must pay attention to heat' and 'lol, heat?'. See the rotting abortion that MWO has become. They went straight to DHS mechs and then clan shite, rapidly realised it was all broken to hell and back so they invented new terrible mechanics to try and paper the cracks.

If people want BT-lite (clan tech) I'm sure there'll be mods for than soon enough. Some people do love the easy mode life.

I remember watching clan vs IS at a TT Con a few times in the 90s before people stopped accepting fight invites. They brought less mechs sure but it's so one sided even an excited teen would be embarressed to play it. The pilots are better, the weapon rolls lower, no heat concerns, more armour, faster and so on ad nauseam. The awful books might let the IS underdogs win now and again but given roughly equivalent players in the Cons (and by extension in computer games pvp) that just ain't happening.
