Any missile or ballistic weapon hitting the head is basically the same as if you're inside a church bell that someone takes a sledgehammer to, even if you discount potential spalling. And a flamer, laser or PPC hit that almost penetrates is likely to get you some burns. Then add neural feedback being a bitch, and any fall taken by the Mech being a real risk of breaking bones even with the pilot strapped in. There's a reason these guys demand five-digit salaries and employer health coverage.

If I strapped you in a chair and threw you off of my roof you'd be in the hospital for a long rear end time, 60 ton robot or not. Also that 60 tons is for the WHOLE robot, only a fraction of it is armor, and even less of it is around the cockpit. Cockpit armor is also limited to the max that can be safely blown off should the pilot chose to eject. There are a small number of mechs that have cockpits in the torso, but no one uses them because if anything goes wrong you're trapped in a dying mech.

The issue with trying to out-armor your problems is that people can always just make a better way to get through your armor faster than you can make your armor thicker.

I get the better of him, blow one of his legs off, then "we just received word the target is escaping" a red "exit" zone appears right next to him, he walks into it (maybe 2 spaces away) and vanishes, mission failed (and 3 pilots dead)

No one shells out that kind of money to write the equivalent of 'Dan is a well adjusted person who drives his ancestral mech after his father had to retire'. That would be an absolutely insane waste of money since there are already a billion of those characters in the game.

2) Writing a good story is hard and most people are terrible at it.

Words are easy. See, I'm wording it up right now. I bet I could be a writer if I just tried.

I'm assuming there's something intentional going on. About three missions after finally getting out of medbay 160 days after getting punched in the face by the "3 years later" shadowhawk, my commander ate four damage in a single turn. (LRM head hit, both side torsos, knockdown) Back to the hospital for 91 days!

Absolutely addicted to this game, and so glad with the purchase.

The reinforcements bug has definitively screwed me a couple of times though, and it seems to be a recurring thing on some missions. I've had the reinforcements spawn before I even made first contact with the enemy, and when I reloaded the mission, the exact same thing happened.

I definitely would like to find more assault mechs, as it's fun to salvage the smaller mechs, but I need me some beef to take on harder missions.

If you overheat you take structural damage which will cause that.

Forgive me, I know this must have been asked a hundred times over, but can someone give tips for mech loadouts early on? I want to attach an extra missle launcher and auto cannon to my Shadowhawk, but then I took a look at how much armor I would need to reduce for that, and, well, it is not that simple, and I have serious decision paralysis.

More specifically, how much armor should I make sure I have on a mech, bare minimum? Also, how does the number of jump jets affect maneuverability?

Per Reddit, apparently number of save games affects performance (it's a Unity issue). So put them in another folder if you don't want to delete them, and turn off cloud saves.

I wouldn't go below 90% armour on centre and side torsos. Jump jets mean you can jump further and are all kinds of useful and fairly light. Autocannons are good, but heavy and require their own ammo so I'd tend to pick either missiles or guns and go large as you can, then flavour with lasers and support weapons.

For your average mech on the front line, I find it difficult to justify anything less than 90% front/arm armor, 25% back armor, and 60% leg armor. LRM boats and snipers can do with a bit less.

More jump jets lets you jump farther.

Armor gets replaced instantly and for free, overheating damages your structure which is what you have to pay to repair. The no armor thing is just a display bug caused by the overheat damage.

Yeah he's one of the Skirmish mode Ronins, they're also the ksbeta pilots.

And someone was wondering if you can add new pilots to skirmish mode. The answer is yes, yes you can. You can either edit the .json files that are already there, or you can add new files [you still need to update your VersionManifest.csv file for every new file or asset you're adding to the data folder], so long as you make sure they have the "pilot_release_skirmish" tag in their "items" category. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go check out the .json files for the pilots in the BattleTech_Data/StreamingAssets/data/pilot folder and see what's there.

Speaking of mods, this ought to help address some of the concerns about the constant escalation of difficulty as you progress a campaign:

Removed forced difficulty boosts + Planet difficulty variety

It's not quite a true sandbox mode (and I'm excited to see what Galaga Galaxian can whip up) but it's supposed give you a wide range of different difficulties to play around with on the star map so you aren't doomed to face an eternity of Assaults and Heavies when you've beaten the campaign.

Astroniomix posted:

That and the mechtechs can't repair the structure when there's armor all over it so they have to strip it off to get to work.

Every single part of a `Mech's structure takes damage when that mech overheats. Basically, manage your heat better.
