I skimmed the last few pages, so sorry if I missed someone posting about this, but I have a late-game question. I've seen pretty much every Assault variant in random merc contract missions by now, except the Atlas. Has anyone seen one in randomly generated missions in the campaign? I'd like to finish playing Mech-pokemon and go do my victory lap, but the Atlas has eluded me so far.

I was thinking it might have something to do with faction rep, maybe the rep-locked 5 skull missions have rarer mechs or something, but I've gotten Liao to allied and I'm still getting "Faction rep too low" for the 5 skull stuff, so I'm just sort of aimlessly wandering around doing missions for reputation at this point hoping something changes. Any tips?

I'm kind of starting to feel like some other people in the thread do, medium mechs are really where this game feels its best. I think once I've finished the campaign and gotten at least one atlas, I'll start over, get the Argo and just medium it up forever.

Another thing I'm disliking about the heavy/assault stages of the game is that every single loving mech, tank, or turret in existence is packing at least a few LRMs since there's so much spare tonnage going around. Regardless of how much you use the terrain to minimize the enemies you're up against at once, you're still going to be taking a few hundred missiles every single round no matter what. It sucks.

This game missed some serious QA.

The trick to this kind of thing is to stay close to your starting point and just waste time with seeking good defensive positions, then waste some more time methodically dismantling everything except your target.

This way, your target has to run all the way back from your starting point when it finally shows up, notices the battle is now 4:1 and goes "nope".

Man story missions are cray. I filled my entire second bay from doing Panzyr. Could really use a combat log, knocked the Dragon out and didn't even realize it. Spent like thirty seconds looking for it and then kept my fingers crossed it wasn't just a los thing.

I'm so superstitious about moving on from my Blackjack. The first time I swapped my Commander into a heavy they ended up getting knocked unconscious and the Blackjack was cored. But I've got this fancy new Dragon and I've had a second Shadowhawk just sitting here and as far as I can tell the Shadowhawk is just flat out better in every way.

You can change the effect of faction reputation in SimGameConstants.json, by default they're pretty low. something like +1/+2/+3 half-skulls over your current global max? Ctrl+F your way through SimGameConstants and look for [rep level name: loathed, indifferent, friendly, etc.] "MaxContractDifficulty" to find the values you should change. ... I have no idea if it works in an ongoing campaign. Maybe?

Goons, I have another nth number of "help me build a decent lance/build" question. I've got a few mechs now and can touch wood easily handle 2 skull missions but still don't have any proper heavy mechs. I've got three mainstays in the lance but it's the forth spot that I'm trying to work out. Further, which should be the next on the list to replace. I'm currently running the following

A 4x ML and slightly up armoured Jenner (with an ace pilot)
A LRM (1x LRM 20++, 1x LRM 15++ & a LRM 5+) boat centurion (PC boat - going up tactics tree)
A melee/brawler shadowhawk (SHD-2H) model (2x SRM6s, 1x SRM4, 1 LL+ & 1 SL+)

The fourth spot has the following contenders.

Wolverine (WVR -6R - 55t)
Another Shadowhawk (SHD - 2D)
Starting blackjack (not really a contender honestly)
Vindicator
Enforcer.

I feel like it should definitely be between the wolverine and shadowhawk but I have no idea how to build mechs. Any thoughts guys?

This is very true. Slowing your roll on missions turns things into easy mode basically. You need to trigger the enemy to come at you and then they will as fast as they can, which means they get strung out and you can pick them off easily. I can only assume no one at HBS ever tried to play the campaign at all, anyone from HBS Confirm/Deny?

Avoid all escort missions and convoy missions if you can, you can straight up fail these through no fault of your own. The assassination ones you can game enough to win. I was close to losing on Weldry with 4 basically undamaged mechs because your protection target just runs in and gets shot from every angle straight away.

I saw the Cent chat a few pages back. It's a great LRM boat, I go for 3xLRM10's and a Large Laser. I don't get as much ammo but the LL gives you a bit of utility I'm finding.

When they put a patch out I hope the stop my PC from trying to burn it's way to the centre of the earth whilst animating the Argo travelling.

I completed Weldry with a

Vindicator (VND-1R)
Shadowhawk (SHD-2H)
Centurion (3xLRM10 + Large Laser)
Blackjack (BJ-1)

Don't underestimate the Blackjacks raw alpha damage, yeah it overheats something chronic but not until after the 3rd alpha strike really. I'm running basically stock mechs for my own perverse reasons, but they all seem capable enough. The Blackjack is not great but it'll carry you through.

The Wolverine will help you capitalise on the stability damage that you're LRM boat can cause. Having all your mechs able to do stability damage can really help, the Shadowhawk is very similar in this regard. I'm a big fan of the Vindicator but that's because I love PPC's, You can try to punch some holes in with the PPC then crit seek with your LRM's etc. I think the Enforcer is just too short range really, you've really only got 2 weapons, the AC10 and LL which means you're not that comfortable at any range. I would say to fit into the Lance you've got the Wolverine would be best.

Newbie questions. I've skimmed the last 5 pages and the OP, apologies if it's already answered.

- Does the game reward specialising your mechs in brawl/medium/long range/indirect fire? Should I go hard on optimising ASAP, or is it better to have several options in the same mech?
- Is there any kind of time limit or can I do as many non-plot contracts as I want?
- Speaking of contracts, how does the savage negotiation slider works? I think that if I settle in X/Y, is X the number of picks and Y is the number of random poo poo I get, but I'm not sure.
- Do I have to pay for Ammo once installed?
- Does my lance weight matter at all? Heavier=Better or should I keep some lights around.
- Any online mechlab I can use to tinker with my designs without having to buy stuff from the store first?

Thats correct.

No you're paying for the ammo box. Ammunition itself is magic.

- Does my lance weight matter at all? Heavier=Better or should I keep some lights around.
Again mission dependent. Some require a fast speedy mech, i.e. convoy intercepts.

1: It doesn't give any specific reward for specialising, but it gives you full ability to optimise your mechs as you like. If you create super organised specialisations you'll likely get a tactical advantage just from doing that.

2: There's no time limit.

3: X salvage represents slots that you can use to specifically choose parts/equipment/mechs out of the salvage pot. Y represents salvage designated to you randomly from the pot. Ideally you want to have 2/3 of X so you can get mech parts quickly.

4: You have to pay for ammo as an equipment in stores, but then its replenished automagically and you don't have to pay for every single bullet.

5: Lance weight does matter as a way of matching difficulty. If the difficulty of the scenario is 1 and your lance weight is 3 you're probably sending down a lance that's overkill and maybe could swap in a light mech or two instead while leaving your heavier mechs for trickier scenarios.

6: Nothing that I know of.

Thanks for this. It's just puzzling to be at "max" rep (allied) and still have "Faction rep too low" blocking me out of missions.

If you don't want to waste time refitting it then the WVR-6R is fine for this really. The AC/5 and SRM's all add up. I'm not a huge AC20 fan myself because of the range, but certainly the AC5+++ and you could see if you could squeeze in the LRM15 but that might mean sacrificing too much.
