First off, I stand behind everything in my OP. I would still take even odds on Frank Mir over anyone else in MMA for a fight held tomorrow. Now, the aftermath... I think Frank Mir can benefit greatly from the loss. He disliked the idolization associated with his "perfect" Bellator record, and may be more likely to fight and train relaxed and happy now that expectations have been tempered. This may even loosen things up enough to get him some UFC fights after his Bellator deal is up, but that's a long shot, as it would almost certainly preclude him from fighting MMA for M-1. Mir wasn't overwhelmed or outclassed; he was outsmarted because he made a blatant error in judgment. He will learn to respect boxing more and move on. Prior to the sub he looked as sharp and quick as ever. I still expect big victories from him in the future. He was honorable in defeat, calm & collected, and stayed true to his principles (I ran into Forest Whitaker after the fight, and he said as much). Even Mir's collapse was measured; it wasn't a panicky flutter, just a single firm slump saying "checkmate." I respect him more than ever. Fight Notes Watching Frank Mir lose was an intense experience. When he was first hip tossed, I thought "this is the Frank Mir magic, he's going to roll out or rip out of it", but the second time he fell alarmed me, and as soon as Fedor secured position, my stomach started sinking. Every second of the knock out stole air from Frank and the entire arena. As the crowd grew quieter, Frank's head grew stiller, and a sense of shock began to build. Then, in one of my biggest "I don't believe my eyes" moments ever, he was stopped, and the heavily pro-Mir crowd roared a mix of disbelief, amazement, anguish. Fight Notes Etc. 1. Walking out, a lone voice wailed above the murmur: "Frank, why did you have to LOOOOOOOOSE?" It was cathartic, and permitted me the first full exhalation since Frank had fallen unconscious.

As someone who's fought both Fedor and Chael I've got to say that Chael just doesn't have the strength in his tiny body to muscle Fedor around. Props to the "original gangster" but I think "The Last Emperor" Takes this one.

Snowman_McK posted:There's already half a dozen unironic 'Fedor would murk the whole top 10' and 'it was great to witness greatness again' threads. One fight removed from losing to a guy who is objectively worse than Cheick Kongo. I was bored the other night and curious about the last time that Fedor had a good win. The last time he beat an opponent who was coming off of a win over someone with a wikipedia page was Pedro Rizzo in 2012, but Rizzo's win was over Ken Shamrock so gently caress counting that (Shamrock was coming off of a win which followed a 5-fight skid, but that win was against a fat guy who literally died of a heart attack in the next year, and Shamrock managed to test positive in a loving Fresno "War Gods" fight). The next most recent was Brett Rogers in 2009. The last time he beat an opponent coming off of two consecutive wins over opponents with wikipedia pages was Arlovski in 2009. Before that it was Nogueira in 2004. Cro cop in 2005 is an awkward case here, as he was on a long win streak when they fought. But Cro Cop was also crushing cans. If we admit Cro Cop, Fedor has in the last 14 years 3 wins over proper opponents, and I'm using a pretty generous definition to identify those opponents.

Heavyweight's such a statistical shitshow that its pointless to try and qualify the best of the bunch. root for who you like, they're all equally good and equally terrible. I like Fedor's patience in the pocket but I felt sometimes he's too content to ride it out instead of pushing the fight. That match against Monson where he did the bare minimum to secure a victory is a prime example. The Ishii fight would have been another decision fight but Ishii practically giftwrapped his chin.
