I played against a Leviathan Dreadnought for the first time today. They’re, uh, pretty good it turns out. Turn 1 it killed my Sicaran from full health, turn 2 killed all of my Inceptors and a few Hellblasters, and then turn 3 with a single would remaining killed six Sanguinary Guard, a full squad of Company Vets and then merked a Librarian on overwatch after it failed to smite the last wound off.

Picked up Know No Fear today to convert all of the Primaris into Deathwatch mans. I didn't realize that some of the Easy-Build stuff had shoulder pads sculpted directly onto the bodies. That took a lot longer than I wanted to bother with it.

But in the end, I have a product that I'm reasonably happen enough with. Please forgive my lovely-rear end picture, I only took one while I was at the FLGS building and I didn't feel like getting all dozen of them back out when I got home. :v:

They're all cleaned up much better than that. Nine of them are still headless, though, since I hate the Primaris helmet and have about a million heads from other Marines that I like better. Hellblasters will be getting beakies, everybody else will be getting whatever I think looks coolest. Intercessor Sergeant got the Deathwatch Mk III helmet on the upgrade sprue.

With the completion of these guys from a modelling perspective, I'm up to:

1x Watch Master
1x Librarian
1x Watch Captain (Artemis, technically)
1x Gravis Captain
2x 5-man Killteams
1x 5-man Intercessor/Fortis Killteam
1x 5-man Hellblaster/Fortis supplemental
1x Inceptor for the Fortis Killteam
1x Venerable Dreadnought
and a few of the Paint-and-Take Speeders that this guy was unloading for cheap that I didn't have anything better to do with.

Question re: charge phase and the Custodian Stooping Dive stratagem-

If my opponent uses a Mind Worm ability on the unit during his psychic phase, would that override the "fight first" modifier in the counter-charge ability contained within stooping dive?

I want to say it applies through out his entire turn, but would the stratagem take precedent in a non rules as written way?

AFAIK, Mind Worm trumps all fight first abilities. I don't think there's an ambiguity in "...may only be chosen to fight in the Fight phase after all other eligible units have fought, even if they have charged or have an ability that would allow them to fight first."

It also says "This effect lasts until the end of your turn." So yes, it would last until his turn is done and your turn starts.

If a unit is already within 1 inch of an enemy unit, it it able to use its pistols to fire overwatch against a second charging unit? I played someone this week who swore it was so but I have never ever heard of this. He tried to show me in the rules but it was one of those edge cases at best.

"A model can fire a Pistol even if there are
enemy units within 1" of its own unit, but
it must target the closest enemy unit. In
such circumstances, the model can shoot
its Pistol even if other friendly units are
within 1" of the same enemy unit."

Pistols must target the closest enemy unit. If you have a model that is part of a unit that is in combat, but that model is technically closer to a model from the charging unit than they are to a model from the unit already in combat, then it can shoot overwatch at the charging model.

This criteria is evaluated per model, I'm pretty sure.

The rules for overwatch explicitly say not if there's something within 1" of you, completely unrelated to the usual rules about shooting if something is within 1" so no that guys a dumbass.

So is Deathwatch the type of thing you're gonna see 2,000 point armies of, or is it something people might use as like an auxiliary force, like bring 1200 points of some other Imperium chapter, then a detachment of say, 800 points of Deathwatch?

I've got these Dark Imperium Primaris marines waiting to be assembled and I'm really interested in Deathwatch since so much of my local scene is xenos

The issue becomes exacerbated the more elite the army is. I would expect mono deathwatch to work for friendlies just like mono ba, but that competitively it'll need to be the hammer for a guard anvil.

I bought my Deathwatch explicitly as a ally for my Imperial Guard. Mostly for Inquisitional Fluff and I'm going to enjoy the painting challenge of it. They really feel like the great "Ally" army as you can tune them to whatever you need. In my case, it is going to be deepstriked or Corvus deployed unit of Smash-Face Marines while my Guard shoot and tank it out with an Inquisitor "tut-tutting" in the background.

I'm a completely casual player but I imagine that Deathwatch is going to have some hard counters, particularly against lots of tanks. I played a few games against Index Deathwatch and the running theme were my guardfolk were slaughtered wholesale while my Leman Russes and Hellhounds ran havoc over his army.

I guess because they're specialists against Xenos, so running against anything Imperial or Chaos might be wasting their speciality? I dunno. They seem lore-wise like some sort of elite force, too. I'm just speculating.

Deathwatch will be called in to fight non-Xenos threats in a pinch. A Marine is still a Marine and a Bolter loaded with Vengence rounds will gently caress up a Traitor Legionaire something royal, it's just not often, usually at an Inquisitor's behest.

And rules-wise it seems like they're doing the smart thing and having most of the <alien army> specialization stuff in stratagems, so a Deathwatch army/detachment shouldn't be too gimped against armies outside their focus.

Hero of hormagaunts everywhere!
Buglord
Played in a LGS 1500pt tournament with ITC rules/missions and managed to take top place with my bugs with two major victories and one minor victory.

First match was against a solid Mephrit/Novohk Necron netlist played by someone who was admittedly new and it showed a bit. It was a bad match for him generally as my Exocrines outranged everything he had and the Harpies were able to harass the Warriors and characters for the first turn, which really slowed their advance and made the pace of their arrival manageable. Pathogenic Slime once again was the star stratagem, as it wiped an entire large unit of Destroyers in a single volley. He conceded at the bottom of four, as he was looking to be tabled.

Next game was against Orks, which I rarely get to fight currently so I was happy to get the chance. It was the ITC kill point mission that award points based on PL, which really hurt him since his list was character-driven and made it easy to rack up points.

Almost immediately I decided to ignore his Gorkanaut as best I could and focus-fire down the rest of his army. He had a really solid deployment and first turn, driving his giant walker into the heart of my land-bound army. His second turn he followed up and managed to get into combat with an Exocrine, but in his eagerness to get his bikers in as well he exposed his character bikers (Warboss, Big Mek, and Painboy) on the back-end, which my reserved Hive Tyrants took full advantage of and cored out the armies leadership.

After that (and some incredible whiffs from his Gorkanaught) I played keepaway and killed everything but his walker by the end. His walker killed one Exocrine and a Malanthrope, and two units of Termagants. It was something like 76-20 at the end.

Last game was again another solid player using Tau. He takes full advantage of drones for ablative wounds on his suits and Riptides, which made them nearly impossible to kill as he made almost all his armor saves and/or FNP rolls.

I took first turn and managed, with all the shooting I had, to take down his Forgeworld flyer before it would get any shots in. We were at a distance that a lot of his first turn was repositioning, with the exception of his two Coldstars, which jumped behind my lines and managed to kill my Malanthrope and an Exocrine with their fusion blasters. My Hive Tyrants arrived and promptly killed them both, but the loss of the -1 to hit debuff really hurt me for the rest of the game.

The remainder of the match was a tight back-and-forth as we could barely wound each other. By the end of it it was a Riptide and it’s drones shooting into a Termagant unit on the “superior” objective, which killed 10/12 and then charging in and whiffing all attacks. He was super pleased with himself that he managed to scrape out the win by outnumbering my models 3-to-2 until I reminded him that my models were Troops and thus I’d won it outright.

It was a fun time and I think it convinced people to make a similar format a monthly event (perhaps a little shorter for time).

I tried both at once point or another. Cutting off just the shoulder pad was really tedious, but I think it's the easier option for the Inceptors and Gravis Captain. Replacing the shoulder entirely worked much easier on the rest of them.

In particular, where it was possible I assembled the arms after cutting off the original parts but before gluing on the new shoulder. When I put the new shoulders on, they're lined up with the arms, but the arms and shoulder are not actually connected by anything. I get the feeling that trying to attach the shoulder to the arms before attaching it to the body would suck.
