I have this idea now, as a finalized Black Mesa approaches, that I'm going to play through Black Mesa, Half-Life 2, and Episodes 1 & 2 in one big binge. Is anybody else planning to do this?

I did this last year (haven't played EP1 + 2 since 2007) last year, and burned out near the middle of EP2. Haven't gone back and finished it yet.

If you never beat episode 2 it's worth going back and doing so, the final encounter is very different from anything else in the series (plus you'll get to witness the cliffhanger that has inspired more than a decade of resentment).

IIRC Ep2 did a way better job than 1 (or the base game for that matter) of introducing new things or changing up what you were doing at a decent pace, nothing really outstayed its welcome or involved long periods of downtime or repetition.

episode 1 definitely isn't bad in its own right and more half life 2 to play is always nice, but episode 2 really did knock it out of the park in terms of shaking things up. also the gnome achievement is one of the most actually interesting things i've done in a game in recent-ish memory.

I've never played Opposing Forces or Blue Shift, which makes me feel like a bad FPS fan :(

I just didn't care for Half life 1's combat (a can of worms I don't want to particularly dive into) and never got back to it.

That explains why most of it feels like a level pack for HL2.

A really good level pack to be fair.

No idea, but the console version (made by a different studio) is a grand old time. Agent Under Fire/Nightfire/Everything or Nothing form a nice little "James Bond batshit set pieces" trilogy.

Shame that Casino Royale and Blood Stone were both rear end though.

I forgot about those console games! They were great. Definitely still lived in the shadow of Goldeneye somewhat but they were pretty inventive in their set pieces, as you mentioned.

The World is Not Enough was really good too, but definitely inferior (although it did boast bots!)

Perhaps I wasn't clear; HL and HL2 are two of my favorite games ever, and I have indeed beaten EP1 and EP2 before. Last year I got on the Black Mesa>HL2>EP1>EP2 kick, but just kinda sputtered out in the middle of EP2.

Yeah I've posted comparisons showing how Quake's grenade launcher--which is basically just an oval--is significantly more readable, competent, and "complete" looking (and arguably just better looking) than Dusk's mortar. Dusk's mortar looks like...well it doesn't really look like anything to me. It looks like somebody made a few mistakes in a modelling program and then saved it.

The Mark V Quake engine has a new stable release with expanded limits to allow playing ad_sepulcher, XInput gamepad support (with the -joystick argument), touchscreen support, co-op savegames, and other goodies. The developer has also started making builds for Android devices if you roll like that. :toot:

==========

With a new Mark V release also cometh a refresh of the Quake Singleplayer Starter Pack.

quote:

**** v1.8 (May 2018)

- Added mod uninstall support in the installer utility.

- Cosmetic improvements to the installer menus.

- Included version 1.99 of Mark V.

- Note that mark_v.exe is now the DirectX variant; the OpenGL variant is gone. This means you will need the DirectX 9 Runtime (see "readmes\basic\1_setup.txt"). And if you have an older version of dx9_mark_v.exe laying around you can delete it.

- The installer utility has been rewritten to take advantage of improvements in Mark V's "install" feature. One side effect of this change is that you do not need .Net Framework 4.5 for the installer functionality now. (It is still required if you use Simple Quake Launcher 2.) This does however also mean that the new installer WILL NOT work with the older versions of Mark V.

Both Opposing Force and Blue Shift are noticeably worse than Half-Life 1 in terms of level design. I'd say you didn't miss much, these expansions really aren't up to the quality standard of the main game. Really shows they weren't made by Valve.

Rage had a lot of tacked on chaff that brought down the game but you can see a direct line from the gunplay in it to what we got in Doom 2016 so I’m glad it happened and the setting is neat enough that if they make a Rage 2 taking what they learned and refined from the first Rage thru the Doom 2016 lens we’d get an awesome FPS out of it

Yeah RAGE had tons of potential. The combat (even the car combat) was great, especially all the weird ammo types (your starting revolver is a peashooter, a sniper rifle, a shotgun and a magnum) and guns and consumables (like the robot buddies). It was just stuffed into a bad open world with short samey dungeons instead of proper full blown iterated on handcrafted levels.

Op4 does have some the best weird weapons in the franchise, though, including:
- Alien bug that spits lightning
- Alien fish that throws up bouncy acid grenades
- Pet barnacle you can use as a grappling hook and/or feed enemies to
- Teleporter gun

and I have a lot of fondness for the bits that let you use the Displacer to teleport yourself between Black Mesa and Xen to find secrets (including a chunk of the HL1 Hazard Course).

Opposing Force was incredible in 1999 when you managed to get 3-4 marine buddies to tag with you, keep them alive, and then see them engaged Block Ops dudes/ Race-X troopers. I used to reload save points and watch those battles play out over and over again. I don't think any other FPS of the time had that.

Also in regards to HL: Episode 3 chat. I found this summary someone wrote up of the story that Laidlaw wrote.

quote:

After the funeral of Eli Vance, Gordon and Alex fly to the Antarctic in search of the Borealis, with members of the Resistance in tow. Gordon and Alex’s plane is shot down, but they manage reach the research vessel, only to discover the Combine have erected a massive base around the Borealis. The Borealis phasing in and out of existence. The Combine are studying it whenever it materializes.

Gordon and Alex encounter Dr. Breen, whose consciousness has been implanted into a giant slug-like creature by the Combine. Breen begs the two to end his grotesque existence. The two also rescue Dr. Judith Mossman from a Combine prison and board the Borealis. The ship continues to shift through time and space, and the trio witness the Seven Hour War and travel to alien worlds.

Mossman and Alex argue over what to do with the Borealis. Mossman believes the ship should be delivered to the Resistance where it can be studied. Alex wants to destroy it, per her father Eli’s wishes. Alex kills Mossman and arms the Borealis to self-destruct, with the intention of destroying the heart of the Combine’s invasion nexus.

The G-Man appears. Alex recognizes him from her childhood and the two depart this reality together, leaving Gordon behind. As the Borealis approaches its target, Gordon sees the Combine world protected by a Dyson sphere and realizes the futility of their attempt.

The Vortigaunts appear and once again rescue Gordon from imminent doom, returning him to Earth.

As another goon pointed out, this still leaves a cliffhanger, but it does tie up the Half-Life 2 arc. I assume the plan was then for all of this to lead to Half-Life 3: Finish the Fight. :j:

That said, what a shame, fighting the Combine on a ship as it phases in and out of multiple universes sounds rad as hell.
