I'm not sure what the game even means in respect to any faction's navy since even in-game it clearly talks about how true warships are virtually extinct. Dropships like the Leopard do have weaponry but they are mostly for defensive purposes.
(Point 2)

Really, not even virtually extinct. They ARE extinct in the Inner Sphere other than ComStar's small fleet. Technically the Taurians have one, but it's basically inoperative (it got hidden in a nebula centuries ago during the SLDF assault, but they lost the facilities to maintain or repair it). None of the Great Houses, and none of the other Periphery factions, have even that much. Everyone just relies on Dropships and Aerospace fighters these days.

I do think it's a flaw that for all intents and purposes you don't see the war happening at all apart from the campaign missions. Which is really odd given that as a mercenary company the war is absolutely where you would want to be at.

I absolutely know why this is the case (the procgen system isn't developed enough to handle putting specific contract types in specific areas) but travelling to the frontline of the Restoration in order to take on some high-risk high-pay warfighting contracts is precisely the kind of thing that would add some life to the map and make you more connected to the story.

I love XCOM and this game has similarly crawled into my mind and taken over my life. I woke up at 5am today and instead of going back to sleep I decided to get a mission in before work. The gameplay isn’t as good (but is still great) as XCOM but building mechs is a lot more fun than managing the ranger or outfitting soldiers.

Also I wish I had known about how controversial this game was. Would’ve gone with a gender neutral Hillary Clinton callsign “Benghazi” leading the Antifa Brigade

Nope, there's only one point of no return and the game explicitly calls it out as one.

Cool cheers, with the lack of salvage and it being a briefing type, I wasn't too sure.

What are folks using for Orion ON1-K builds? I just got my first one and right now I've just got it with two SRM6++, a Large Laser, a few Mediums, JJs, Heat Sinks, and additional armor (I think). It's been effective enough, but it kind of feels undergunned. Maybe I just haven't used SRMs enough.

You could probably stand to plop off that Large Laser and replace it with something else, that thing runs way too hot for the damage it deals. Some people go pure brawling based around an AC/20 and some SRMs and it's hard to go wrong with that, season with MLs to taste.

That said I did mod the gently caress out of energy weapons in my second campaign so that would actually be a decent build for me.

You've done well, kiddo.
I'm not sure if I'm bad at the game or going slow or something?

I just did quite an early mission where my biggest mech is still the shadow hawk, although I also have a Treb, Griffin and Centurian. I came up against a Jaegermech and 3 Wolverines, supported by a Jenner and 3 more Wolverines. Even though the 2nd lance was supposed to be reinforcements, it wasn't a big map and they just all piled in at once.

On the 2nd reload I limped through it by basically hiding and abusing the fact that the Jaegar was the only mech without jump jets and just had a big slugging match against a load of Wolverines. My Centurian was cored and the Shadowhawk finished with only 1 half of the mech remaining.

It took so long I went through all of my ammo and was lucky I had a few lasers equipped on the Treb to finish off the Jaegar once everything else was dead.

Am I doing something wrong? The mission was only 2 skulls, I dread to think what anything higher will be like.

Currently I maxed out medium lasers and machine guns and dubbed it "Head Hunter". I'm tempted to ditch the lasers and heatsinks and fill it full of punching mods instead.

I've been using an Orion with 1 ppc++ and 2 LRM 15++s. It does a great job of maxing out a stability bar and provides excellent fire support. Just have to watch the heat gauge, but you can always fire the LRMs and you even cool off a little bit when you lay off the ppc.

I'm using mine as a 95 ton firestarter: 6 flamers, punch mods, jumpjets and armor. It is surprisingly effective if you can get it to close the distance.

Edit: What can I use the Victor or Battlemaster for?

Wouldn't MGs be more handy there? The punch of a 95 tonner should take out the armor and the MGs would critseek the gooey center.

Victors you can sell for money, Battlemasters I used semi-stock with a PPC, 6ML, an SRM6, and jets. Tear off the MGs, and the extra ton of SRM ammo, add 2 tons of armor, and take off as many of the SHS as you need to fit the jets/fill with DHS.

A thing to keep in mind is that "dropships" are a generalized term for any large spaceship that doesn't have a jump capability, regardless of whether or not they have atmospheric capability.

Hence why the Argo is considered a Dropship.

As far as naval power goes, even without proper Warships there's also a whole subcategory called Assault Dropships that are designed to be gunboats that hunt other dropships or act as air support and carry little if any ground units.

You know, as goofy as those are, they did help me identify what is bothering me about all the redesigns- the arms don't move anymore. If you look at the concept art for MWO battlemechs they're always posed really dynamically but the in-game models have the doot-doot robot arms that just stick straight out. HBS' battletech seems to have run with that. For BT2, assuming it happens, I'd really like to see mechs actually use their arms to aim, or drop them to their sides in idle animations.

Yeah that works too but it's not as hilarious as dumping 60+ heat into a target and crippling them. It's my go-to strategy for capturing mechs, now. And I'm doing a full pokemon run, gonna catch 'em all.
