I guess if you publish a super inofficial game guide you have to cover your rear end but come on

I always liked stuff that seemed to be boasting about it being “UNOFFICIAL!” as if that meant it was actually going to be a better product.

EL BROMANCE posted:I always liked stuff that seemed to be boasting about it being “UNOFFICIAL!” as if that meant it was actually going to be a better product. for strategy guides and whatnot, it kind of made sense- the idea was that the unofficial guide would have stuff that the official guide didn't necessarily want to spill the beans on, or that might be potentially embarrassing to the dev/publisher (like glitches and version differences and whatnot). I remember having an unofficial guide for Primal Rage that had separate movelists for every version of the game, outlines of how all the home versions differ from the arcade, a little blurb about the piss fatality getting censored, and all sorts of neat stuff that you probably wouldn't see in the real guide.

That’s fair, I don’t think I’ve ever owned a strategy guide for a game. I’m remembering things like band calendars and magazines about them. I’m sure they legally have to state they’re not official products to just about get away with existing, and they try use it as a selling point. The current ones I found all look a bit more subtle than the ones I grew up with.

EL BROMANCE posted:I always liked stuff that seemed to be boasting about it being “UNOFFICIAL!” as if that meant it was actually going to be a better product. The unofficial Final Fantasy VII strategy guide was fantastic, if only because it gave you the strategy for fighting the boss following Aerith's death in vague terms without referencing the event itself, whereas Square's official guide gave you a full-page spread of clips of the death cutscene on the right-side page with absolutely no warning. It also includes a random debug enemy that was only in the JP version of the game, which opened up a whole new realm of speculation back in the day.

It had an obscene amount of items and things listed that never existed in the game, with absurd stats. I spent so much time trying to find those things that weren't actually there. edit: man, that sword would be really uncomfortable to hold

Some other issues with it were that it didn't have any information on the Man in Kalm that you could trade the items from the Weapon fights to for stuff you probably didn't need if you could already beat the Weapons, and then that treasure map you only got from morphing a specific enemy in the underwater reactor that when you gave it to him he gave you the materia that took away the time limit fighting emerald. I also had This Gem which is an awful, awful guide. The author hand draws all the illustrations (quite poorly) instead of taking screen shots, she constantly interjects personal opinion and unfunny jokes, and often she just plain is wrong about a lot of the facts of the game due to using a Japanese copy. Also, it spoils a ton of the plot. It might be the worst guide I've ever seen.

I believe this is probably because the Weapons weren't in JP 1.0, so those quests weren't even included.
