There's not even anything to debate in those posts, when someone thinks that all gun control advocates must be fascists that's way past the point of reasoned debate

I like the idea that a simple change of law turns otherwise normal people into Purge villains.

The idea of criminality being a trait and not a consequence is so stupid.

Separate thought:

Right wing gun fetishists are so concerned about jackbooted gun grabbers because in their heart of hearts they dream of enacting their own decrepit mores by that exact method.

It's projection turtles, all the way down.

It's interesting that the NYS gun laws and people ITT are super concerned about "criminals." What is it about "criminals" that liberals seem to love to bring up when passing gun control laws? I wonder if they are using "criminal" to refer to something else, maybe a trait that would be shared by the type of people most impacted by "common sense" laws?

In order to not be anymore obnoxious then you deserve I'll just say it. Gun Control is racist. It has racist roots, and only racists support it. Further there is no way to pass any kind of "may-issue" gun control licensing or registration without relying on racism to keep guns away from "criminals."

Listen, I've been around a bit, you know, and I thought I'd seen some creepy things go on in the movie business, but I really have to say this is the most disgusting thing that's ever happened to me.
I sort of have to wonder how many of the more fervently gun-grabber people ITT have spent much time talking with "average" gun owners. I've talked a lot of fellow shooters, in NYS, VA and VT. Of course up here in VT it's easier to find granola-green gun people who basically support the entire democratic agenda (background checks, class bans on some guns, etc). But, I met a lot of those people in NYS and VA as well. I'm not just talking about basically liberal friends who enjoy blowing stuff up, but lots of randos at the range as well.

Within those demographics I have encountered a wide spectrum of opinions, and people who just think, full stop, status quo is fine and any effort to curtail it is THE UN BLUE HATS WANT MAH GUNS are a significant minority. A very vocal one, who are parroted ad infinium by NRA ads, but a minority none the less.

My point is that "LOL WE'RE COMING FOR YOUR GUNS NOW" posts strike me as obvious flamebait. That's fine, venting is fine. But, if you want to effect policy change, I'd encourage you to be a bit more nuanced and actually talk to people, because I think it would be surprisingly easy to come up with a coaltion of gun owners in favor of procedural, evidence-based progressive reduction in gun availability and the number of guns in the wild.

Granted, the most fervent gun owners in this thread are idiots, but, this is the internet.

disclaimer: I personally support nearly any law change that seems likely for fact-driven reasons to reduce the number of guns in circulation in America, second amendment be damned, and if guns were ever banned for civilians I'd be on board with that provided it was in lockstep with actual measures to disarm and demilitarize the police. So, this puts me significantly to the left of most gun owners even here in VT, and I'm not trying to play it off as though my particular position is well represented. But, like I said, it's a spectrum, and I am not alone.

There's no such thing as "average gun owners". Average people by definition do not have guns when gun owners are such a small minority.

It's not 1955 anymore, gun ownership is not a typical thing, and thank God for that.

Also protip: if you have ever voted in favor of guns over anything else, you ain't left. You're just a conservative idiot who's lying to themselves and others.

Ah so you believe there's a massive conspiracy among 200 million or so Americans to lie that they don't have guns but secretly do while only 70 million or so tell the truth that they do have guns. That's what you'd need after all for the ownership rate to stay the same from over 60 years ago to now, but for the ownership rates reported in multiple sorts of surveys over the years to go down.

Well that's certainly something you can choose to believe, but it also isn't true.
