I want to manage what feels like people, not just balls of statistics. Not telling them how to do everything, and being able to delegate to sub-managers of varying ability. As I've said, something close to Football Manager, but I'll also just take bickering advisors as in Civ 2, or heck even King of Dragon Pass. I know finding the perfect game is a long shot until Burden of Command comes out, but I'd primarily love to hear about older titles like this.

Ok, you look like you need to play King of Dragon Pass then.

So for what it's worth, the standalone expansion to Nobunaga's Ambition:SoI (don't know the English name since I have it in Japanese where its title is Sengoku Risshiden) kind of has this. If you play as a Daimyo, you can designate individual retainers as Castle Lords, which creates their own little sub-clan. You can give sub-clans individual targets and they'll try to conquer them on their own, and at the beginning of every month they'll make requests of you that you can approve or deny. Things like "give me another castle to manage" or "I need X amount of Y resource." Approving them all can deplete your own resources rapidly but if you keep denying them it will anger them, especially if their outlook (every character is either progressive, moderate, or conservative) differs from yours.

But I wouldn't call it too deep, and the real appeal of the game is playing as a random grunt retainer and working your way up the pecking order rather than starting out the gate as a Daimyo so I'm not sure it matches what you're looking for entirely.

That sounds like a massive upgrade to standard SoI, so I might grab that when it's next on sale, thanks!

Trip report on Ogre Battle: My one annoyance is that seemingly, tight encirclements are either worthless or fiddly. Other than that, the formation/class systems are a wonderful abstraction of concepts like a force's doctrine. It even seems to have a great story, though that's to be expected considering Let us Cling Together.

Anything good out there for games where you upgrade your army?

I'm not looking for hero-based games with distinct squad members in a pseudo-RPG style, like Dawn of War 2.... but you know Global Conquest mode in Command and Conquer 3, where you could build / upgrade custom strike forces on the strategic layer and then take them into tactical battles? Or Raynor's campaign in Starcraft 2, where missions and bonus objectives rewarded you with money you could use between missions to buy permanent upgrades for your units? I really enjoy that feeling of investing in my army and seeing that investment pay off in concrete ways.

Would XCOM fit the bill here? Troops gain experience to learn new skills, and you can research and equip better gear to them. You're dealing with squads, not armies, though.

Endless Legend is a turn based 4x that plays similar to Civilization. You have heroes that can be army generals or city rulers, that attain experience and level up, picking skills from several options based on their class. The heroes AND normal units all have gear slots that you fill with weapons, armor, shields, rings etc, which add more abilities and raw power; each faction actually only has 3 base units (usually infantry, cavalry, and specialized), and fear upgrades is how you advance them as the game goes on.

The game is gorgeous, has an amazing soundtrack, loads of polish.

Here is the gear screen for a standard, non hero unit:

Are there any good successors to Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction? Something where gratuitous firepower is always an option, even if it's not an especially good / necessary one? I played the sequel for a few minutes and the changes to the airstrikes (and the load times) robbed a lot of the charm.

I always enjoy the little card games activities some RPGs have, like Triple Triad or Gwent and I'd like to play a full game of that but I'd rather it not be online and change it's balancing and meta every week. I've considered Heartstone several times but I keep seeing people - who actually enjoy playing the game - grumbling every time a patch comes and changes the meta and they gotta reshuffle their decks or scrap around to be able to buy new cards to be able to properly play again and that sounds like a pain.

Gwent got it's own spin off that you can just play against people, but shifting metal are important for people to want to keep playing / spending you won't be able to find a card game that will keep your deck emta forever but if you can build up a small core of key cards in eternal or hearth stone than new meta time can be fun.

I've played it, it's pretty good fun. It's a vast improvement over the first game, certainly; having both players on the same board does wonders for improving interactivity. You're not going to find the levels of depth and fine-tuning that you'd get from a game that was designed from the ground up for competitive play (it has PVP but I gather it's a little degenerate), but as a singleplayer experience I definitely got my money's worth.

Same thing will happen with any CCG. Download Hearthstone and play the Monster Hunt which is completely free and will give you a taste of Hearthstone. This and Slay the Spire are both forks of Dream Quest, which is also a really good game.

I played Battlefield 2 back in the day which is sorta what I'm going for, individual performance doesn't matter that much but you can still git gud. Is Battlefield 1 the latest in this series? Do people still play it? Any other similar games out there?

Yeah Hearthstone monster hunt and dungeon run is a good suggestion.

If you hang out in the Hearthstone thread the biggest single complaint is probably that it doesn't shake up the meta often enough, so it might be worth checking out the online part too.

My pedometer just told me I walk on average 11-13 miles a day. Is there any sort of RPG game, or just any real game at all that I can download for my Galaxy thing and use the pedometer in some kind of gamey way? I understand Pokemon Go does something like that, but I've never played it and I think it's too late to get into now. And I don't want to, also.

An RPG I am not aware of. However, there are two fitness apps you might be interested in - "Zombies, Run!" is a jogging app set against audio clips that play automatically as you move around, narrating the story of you surviving and serving as a "Runner" - think part reconnaissance specialist, part soldier, and part salvage expert - at a survivor settlement. You gradually figure out the story behind the outbreak itself, blah blah blah, etc. etc. etc. You can have it judge you on movement speed / time / distance if you want, or just walk / run at your own pace however you please. It has a few different modes and is several seasons in, so there's plenty of content. It's pure cheese and pretty dumb, but can make your exercise a bit more entertaining.

From the creators of that app, there's also The Walk - pretty much the same narrative style but specifically designed for a much more sedate pace, set against a backstory of international intrigue and spy / arms race stuff. I worked my way through that one a couple years ago while getting over a leg injury. It's much shorter.

Hope those suggestions help a bit!

It's an audio drama and a game based on how you run / how well you excercise.

I'm looking for a sandbox game about conquering/building an empire/becoming personally powerful with a variety of ways to do it. For example: Mount&Blade, Starsector, X3 with enough mods that you end up ordering around a fleet of trading ships, Pirates... I'm aware of Star Traders: Frontiers and Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare, but Early Access and all that.

I've played both Star Traders and Freeman. Star Traders might be early access but it's completely playable and enjoyable now. It really does feel like your own game of Rogue Trader and is very satisfying/crunchy. Lots of ways to advance/feel powerful, although it's not big on the fleet aspect, more powerful captain + experienced officers + loyal and trained crew as the method of growth. Freeman feels half-baked. There might be a cool modern/FPS version of Mount and Blade, but it doesn't feel ready yet. Wait on that.

Doesn't really have to be a survival horror or anything, but the closer to the PE format, the better.

This isn't exactly an action game, but horizon zero dawn does exactly this. All of the weapons aren't strict upgrades, but more tactical options for each encounter. Each individual weapon also has upgrade options, but the combat is super tactical and weapon choice is a big part of it. I even went as far as having multiple copies of some of the weapons, so I could outfit them in different ways and switch mid battle without having to spend time changing the mods around.
