Also, the plasma cutter setup ensures that the hole is exactly where he wants it, without any chance of skipping around or oval-ness due to a janky bit. It could also be an odd size that was between two common hole saw sizes. It's a pretty big hole. chances that the hole saw will gently caress off sideways are pretty big.

While I love watching Nick do his thing and his fab work is impeccable, the plasma cutter to make a hole thing seemed entirely too overcomplicated. Hole saws exist for a reason.

Hand held hole saws of that size dont really work as well as that trick Nick used, let alone arent something you usually have lying around.

That first still shot is a once in a lifetime shot right there. Not only was he able to follow it through the lens, but the autofocus did it's job too with a very shallow depth of field. I had a money shot like that once lined up and the autofocus let me down, talk about a total bummer.

I managed to photograph a motogp crash several years ago, it was a weird moment of clarity. I pulled zoom as I realized the rider was going down, tracked the bike as it cartwheeled through the gravel, and had a couple pretty good frames of the bike disintegrating. Nothing as career defining as that photo though, it was pretty much just a bike and nothing else.

But I'll assume that's how it went for this guy too. With the added bonus of a giant raging boner as he checked the preview on his camera.

The last few laps of that race were great fun, 2nd and 3rd place collided and they both went down, giving the podium away to the next two in line. Moto3 owns.

Does any professional photographer use autofocus? With enough training you're probably faster (and more reliable) with a manual focus.

Almost all of them do. With a pro body and say a decent L-Glass, you wont get close to the speed what AI-Servo(AI-Focus? gently caress been too long sicne I set the camera up, I just have a "Motorsport" setting) can do - it probably helped he woud have been likely been tracking the bikes already and the focus would have been close to begin with. Also I'm sure he would have had high speed capture on and I bet either side of that one there is a blurry shot. Also given you can set up your focus points to get the best results - I tend to use centre with four .... okay gently caress it's been so long since I dialled in the camera I forgot 3/4 the poo poo I did.

But to be honest, perfect clarity isnt always required for a great crash/action shot

Autofocus on professional SLRs is really really good.

Even if can nail the focus manually under normal conditions, you probably can’t at 14 frames per second with the mirror flapping up and down like a hummingbird’s wings.

Thanks for the rundown. I figured professional cameras would be better, but I was still prejudiced by lovely consumer cameras that take 5 seconds to focus and then changes it to be out of focus again just as you push the button.

Why wait? Just glance at any Birmingham badman is a C class and you can race the ring road every day!

I got chased by an old man who thought I was French (?) last week because I didn’t let him merge fast enough for his liking haha. The Coventry ring road is truly magical.

Almost every sport (especially motorsports) is going to be way too fast to even think about using auto focus, it's pretty much impossible. The only photographers that might use manual focus are portrait photographers, and even most of them just use autofocus because it's easier.

Cameras these days are much much better, back when i was shooting sports with a pair of 20Ds I was at the mercy of the autofocus working when it felt like it and that was incredibly frustrating, the guys using MkII's at the time weren't fairing much better either.

This shot right here could have made me a lot of money. Capital One Bowl, LSU vs Iowa, hail mary pass at the end of the game for the win with seconds left. I anticipated the play and was in perfect position, however my camera decided to gently caress off.

And in contrast, a good one where it worked perfectly.

So although cameras are much better these days, it's still about anticipating whats going to happen, being in the right spot and praying the autofocus pulls through at the right time.

Mercs and GTD drivers wanting to race my wheezy 30yr old Toyota is never not funny. I don't care, my poo poo's cooler looking. I drove Birmingham a couple of weeks back, the roads are all falling apart and the traffic is awful. I forgot how much I hated driving there.

No slicks, basically no aero, and the cars are actually quite hard to drive since you have to constantly manage the brake bias to account for regen. Di Grassi told me it’s way harder than WEC was, and every other driver I’ve talked to has said it’s a real challenge. Also, there isn’t a single pay driver on the grid—you can’t say that about any other professional series right now.

Well I've watched probably 15 and seen it live 3 times.

It's horrendous. poo poo cars on poo poo tires running on poo poo, narrow rear end street tracks does not make for good or exciting racing. The small bit of excitement that does happen is due to the narrow rear end tracks, and being unable to move.

It's like watching Macau and Monaco over and over, without even the visceral experience.

I would rather watch livestreams from Sarah Fischers go kart track than that series.
