I enjoyed Ultimate Spider-man but it's true that binging through it, the cumulative amount of misery heaped upon Peter gets a bit much. Almost every story is the worst thing that's ever happened to him, with very few "relief" stories in between. JM Dematteis is often accused of having taken Spider-man to overly dark places, but those stories usually had a catharsis or growth at the end of them, and few of Bendis' stories even have that. Then it the end it kind of started to lose cohesion, and we got the usual dissatisfying payoffs to long running threads that I consider a Bendis trademark (Such as Roxxon, which had been built up for about a hundred issues, being taken down when one bi-polar business man gets beat up). Overall it's still a very good comic and I'd recommend it to most fans of Spider-man.

Oh yeah, there was that one issue where Spider-Man and Wolverine switched bodies. That was the loving worst. "Hey, I know we've been unrelentingly grim and depressing for awhile, so here's a fun one-off adventure where Wolverine hilariously threatens to sexually assault a high schooler!"

Not that this stari decsi has been set, basement dwellers everywhere will be forced into the light. On the positive side, this exposures them to more people, helps them with their social skills, and makes them more well-adjusted. The bad side is that none of that positives are true.

I went to MegaCon today and got comics signed by Alex Maleev (who I've met once before), Jock (all five Losers TPBs!), Tom King, Clay Mann, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, and Peter Tomasi. Also found the Donald Glover Lando action figure for $20, which is cheaper than Amazon and the big box stores. Got there when it opened at 10, and left shortly after 2, quitting while I was ahead. Then I split a torta and had some tacos with my friend.

Guy Goodbody posted:Really? I mean, the story is literally about coming back to life and that being bad. It seems kinda obvious and fitting to me. I mean, yeah. It's very obvious on a literal level (and no doubt, given the verses about goblins and warlords, a literal level is how it was intended) but the forlorn way it gets sung makes it sound like the singer has reflected on his own life and sadly realizes he would not want to live it again. To me, anyway, the implicit assumption would be if your life is good, you'd want to live it again. So it's tragic that he doesn't want to live it again, and that register isn't what I normally associate with the Ramones. Speaking of the Ramones, there was a boxed set several years ago that came with a Ramones comic book with a sweet EC inspired cover. Has anyone read it?

A Strange Aeon posted:So it's tragic that he doesn't want to live it again, and that register isn't what I normally associate with the Ramones. They weren't a happy bunch of people by 1989. They hated each other's guts, but were forced to stick together to make a living, and their attempt at gaining mass popularity had fizzled, so they were out on the road grinding out a living playing for their fans, putting out albums that weren't selling well, and stuck writing a tie-in song for a low budget horror movie. Dee Dee hated being a Ramone so much he quit years before the band retired, and had drug problems that resulted in his early death. Joey hated Johnny for stealing and marrying his girlfriend, and Johnny was apparently a really unpleasant conservative who was in it for the cash and kind of forced the others to keep going after the spark had gone out. There's a good documentary about them called End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones that goes into all of the behind the scenes drama, also Phil Spector holding them hostage at his house at gunpoint while they were recording the album that they were hoping would be their breakout hit, End of the Century.
