Pinball is still very much a thing, you just have to seek it out. It's not a massive phenomena like it was in the 70's and 80's but it never totally went away.

It's not huge like it used to be, but 2-3 new tables come out a year. I'm in the Toronto area and there's multiple leagues that run, as well as a couple dedicated pinball/arcade bars. My friend hosted world championships at his home this past weekend. I'm watching a guy stream a newish Adam West Batman themed game on twitch right now. Pinball still exists and it's very good. Check this map to find pinball in your area To stay on thread, please enjoy this gif of a FORBIDDEN TECHNIQUE: the Death Save

There's also the "Live Catch" variant. All you do is hit the flipper so it hits the ball just at the end of its stroke. Correctly performed the ball will lose all momemtum and stop dead on the flipper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdlZS-0SAaw

DaveKap posted:I kinda assumed what DJ Fuckboy Supreme meant (... nice name, btw) is that modern tables have so many different configurations, the idea that the paddle separation and bumper position is such that half these techniques can even be used is questionable. Still awesome gifs tho. Nearly every table, if not all, in the past 20+ years has the traditional set up of two flippers under two triangular slingshots. Though sometimes there will be weird poo poo at the top or sides of the table (eg, a ball-launching cannon, a wrestling ring, another tinier pinball table, etc)

Some of them are hair-pin while others require a hammer's force to trigger. Hell, same with the flippers themselves. It just seems like too many variables against hard-grain physics to make stuff "just work" by knowing a technique.

DaveKap posted:I mean, I don't disagree with this fact, but the exact positioning of those flippers and slingshots vary wildly enough that plenty of those techniques don't actually work, as they require specific angles and positions to pull off. Right? Because of the mechanical nature of a pinball table the fine details of performing the technique will be different, but once you get the fundamentals and now when to use each one, it gets way easier. The closest analogy I can think of is like the lie of a putting green. If you play on a hole enough you'll know what way putts will break, and you can figure out how a pinball table handles after a few minutes of playing on it.
