Where'd you get that from? I'm genuinely curious.

If you ask Dr. Murad about it after the mission she says that, according to the files she saw before the Locura got loose, whatever they were researching had to do with drone warship control AIs. A funny thing about the Terran Hegemony's SDS drones was that you had to shut them down entirely and let a human crew take over when moving them between star systems. Having the AI active during a jump consistently caused it to irreversably go full Skynet and just flag everything other than itself as hostile. Nautilus was apparently home to a research project that was trying to fix that little issue.

Bingo. It's the AI for a M-2 drone, the Terran Hegemony's first attempt at an AI-operated combat dropship. Unfortunately it treated IFF codes as a suggestion even without jump issues and was cancelled. Turns out a few centuries in cold storage at the edge of civilized space is a poor remedy for omnicidal tendencies.

Everything I've said about the origins, handiwork, and fate of the CASPAR drone warships gets detailed in the Liberation of Terra sourcebooks, most relevantly page 153 of Vol. 1. Those and the two Succession Wars sourcebooks are interesting reads if you want to know what the heck's going on at the end of the game intro and how it leads to the setting everything occurs in. Sarna doesn't appear to have a full article on the whole Hegemony campaign, but if you wanna know how crazy the battle for Terra was, here you go.

So am I, because that last line is blatantly false. Comstar totally has those kind of systems, because the Wobbies extensively deploy SDS systems during the Jihad. The only thing really limiting them is that while they're certainly easier, cheaper and faster to field than actual manned Warships, it's still a fair bit of construction needed to deploy the larger command ships and the like.

Technically the Clans do too, and it was indeed a major plot point in the first book of the invasion of Huntress (as in the IS forces felt the need to sneak infiltrators in first to shut down their suspected system), but the writers basically forgot about that plot point afterwards. The Wars of Reaving saw basically all honor rules thrown out the door, so it's not like various Clans wouldn't have activated them just to spite everyone else.
You're mistaken friendo, because you can have a SDS without drones, and drones were only one part of the SDS. The Word recreated what they could of the SDS, ground-to-orbit weapons emplacements included, but since they had so little to work with their drones were only up to dropship size, lacked true AI, and needed remote human control to emulate the intelligent behavior the originals had. Clanners didn't need them to make attacking Huntress risky either.

Sometimes the powers you get are shit.
Trying to cobble together another assault after getting the one from the mission is a PIA. So far whenever I see one in a mission it's surrounded by heavies so it's an oh gently caress moment to knock it out. Basically I don't feel like I have the luxury to try and pick off parts to get the max salvage out of it. Not to mention even if I can get two parts, getting a third has been impossible.

Horace Kinch
Aug 15, 2007

If I see a mech I want I usually stunlock it with SRM/LRM spam. After a knockdown or two I blow off a leg and a lucky ammo explosion will finish off the pilot. 3/3 more often than not, otherwise leg it for 2/3.

So, anybody have any fun with the mods? some package mods are out on Nexus, one being "RougeTech" and another new one is the "Dz Consolidated Mod Pack" Any thoughts?

I've been puttering around with the LOS changes, salvaged mechs coming in as broken, the panic system and it's adding quite a bit of depth to it. Or at least extending the scrappy "gotta make rent" part of the game.

The only difference is that the VTR-9B has 1 more (3 total) ballistic hardpoint in the right arm and the VTS-9S has 1 more (3 total) missile hardpoint in the left torso. I don't think that would change how I'd build it, but I'm a sucker for the AC/20s.

And some tweaked weapon values: AC2s to 30 damage 0 heat 1 ton of ammo built in, Medium Lasers down to 20 damage 12 heat, normalized the various missile launcher sizes so there's no weird outliers, PPCs stack their debuff and it lasts 2 turns, Large Lasers run cooler, etc. All tweaks you can do with Notepad++ on json files.

I did that with pulse lasers. AC/2s I dropped to 4 tons but no free ammo. Since I changed the heat it pretty much means that the AC/2 is one ton more than a med laser for the range improvement.

Makes mounting multiple AC/2s on certain units rather appealing. And I updated all of the Mechs with AC/2s to use the extra tons, usually on armor though the BJ-1 gains an extra heatsink.

I upped the base view range to 400 in my game. Makes a few of the missions a bit more challenging. I've also applied a 2 point accuracy penalty to missiles that does a lot to limit their ability to unsteady targets, though I increased the lost leg penalty to 2 blips which makes it auto-unstable an unskilled pilot.

I need to mod the hell out of AC2s because in MWO boating them is a legit good strat since they're such an insane force multiplier. Chain-firing a bunch of AC2s can strip a planet of its crust with enough ammo.

I'm using the stock loadout, honestly. The Gauss Rifle is already so good anything else is just the cherry on top. It generates such little heat you can give the dual heatsinks to your laserboats.

If you extract from a Assassination mission do you still get a chance at salvage or should you just go all in on the money when negotiating?

The game's knocked up the difficulty a bit and I can't be bothered taking out all 10 heavy mechs.

I run Gauss/Ac5 with 2/1 ton of ammo respectively, two medium lasers and a LRM 20 in the arm and an LRM 10 in the torso. It took me ages to find a decent pair of LRM 15s so I don't know the difference in how they math out.

I settled on the Gauss, a PPC, an LRM 15 w/ 2 tons of ammo, and I think a couple MLs and a full compliment of SLs. Kept 1 maybe 2 DHS and added a SHS or two, and put a +100 view range mod in the head. Used it to spot things and nuke them from afar while spotting for other long range mechs.

How did I even get here?

Pillbug
My Royal Highlander probably falls deep in the suboptimal category. But I just removed the SRM launcher, kept a full rack of M lasers, popped out two of the DHS I didn't need to still run ice cold. Then I threw in in a pair of small lasers and gave it more armor than God.

Turning it into a 24/7 max range bot feels much more comfortable once I had other assault mechs for it to hide behind. But before that, it seemed to help more to be willing to rotate it up to the front lines and take a load off my two Brawler heavies.

"Don't worry, side torso exposed grasshopper. Royal Highlander is here to soak AC20 rounds otherwise meant for you and give not a single gently caress if they don't hit cockpit."

It took a few false starts, but now I'm really getting into doing the same (except the AI mod, haven't even looked for it) Barely making enough cash while slowly getting the Argo fixed and salvage stockpiled. Its an engaging struggle.

Second mission, 3 days before finances, 30k in the bank. Game is working as intended

Well I beat the story.

Meh.

The second to last mission was more enjoyable than the first, but my lance was so ridiculously kitted out that nothing stood a chance. For the final battle I wanted to see if I could get Victoria's King Crab so I intentionally brought several LRM boats to disable it. I executed it perfectly, slaughtering everything but the mech I wanted and then knocking the pilot out with strikes that kept the chassis intact.

And... nothing.

Frankly not getting that salvage made the ending of the story, which I had already gotten bored of, even less appealing. Yay, whatever, we won. Where's my loving salvage.

Overall, good game. I don't see any reason to play beyond it until we get more content, missions that aren't cookie cutters, and more mechs to kill and play with. At this point the Argo has a full bay full of mechs, and easily another full complement worth in the cargo hold along with enough lasers and missiles to outfit an entire region. So there's definitely a problem with the difficulty curve, especially given that the game still pits heavies and mediums against you near the end.
