wielder posted:I am done with Saint Seiya these days, but used to be a huge fan. The first dozen Hades episodes or so should still be worth watching and are probably the most interesting part of the storyline. I've skimmed through a few Youtube videos and they don't look too bad. It helps that they were directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi (known for working on Casshern Sins and several of the more stylistically interesting episodes from the old Saint Seiya TV series plus some standalone movies). It's mainly the coloring that turned me off. It has that flat early 00s digipaint look and coming from the 80s show with it's insane neon and watercolors was kind of a letdown. I thought the Inferno arc was the best part, the Saints just wandering around hell beating up Hades' goons was just plain fun in a way that reminded me of the Silver Saint arc. A big issue with the Hades arc is that it's a series.of anticlimaxes, it introduces a lot of interesting ideas but never follows up on them. The Three Judges of Hell are badass looking but don't do anything really. There's a huge climactic showdown between two characters that should be hugely emotional and tense but then it turns out it was all a dream. The bronze saints don't do much until the end which is a bummer because they're the reason I'm watching the show! I would say stop at Poseidon because that's a good enough ending. All the interesting plot hooks.of the Hades arc are never given their due, in my opinion.

The entire Gold Saints arc is incredible and the Asgard arc after it is probably the best anime original arc in a shonen anime. After that is the Poseidon arc which isn't as good as Asgard but it's only 12 episodes long. Ya I ll check it out then. I remember enjoying the gold saints battle quite a lot until I dropped it. Hunt11 posted:Akame ga Kill is weird because for the most part it is kind of lovely, but it does also have a couple interesting moments that hint at the show being better then it actually is. Ya the first episode was interesting but then the mc's friends get killed by some rich psychopaths and it seems everyone in the capital is bad because they are rich? Not sure but they pretty much say and show that everyone in the capital are horrible human beings without any explanation. Julias posted:Gonna throw you a curveball and say Zatch Bell (Gash Bell). Not sure how I feel about shorts.

I'm just getting into Soul Eater. It's a relatively modern Shonen with a great sense of style and fun characters. It looks great, too - it's got the same director as Star Driver. I don't know if it holds up all the way through but it might be worth a shot!

It's got nothing in the way of power levels or superpowers, but it's got the best sense of momentum of any action-oriented shounen I've seen. As mentioned before, the first season was released as five daily shorts and a compilation ep of those shorts, but it works to its strengths since the series is very episodic. The full length versions feel like the right way to watch the show to me anyway, since a lot of the individual segments will relate to each other or just be straight up connected arcs. I recommend it since you said you liked Gintama, and the show has a lot of similar beats with fourth wall jokes and sweet, heartwarming moments.

hey friends my wife and I just finished 'Kids on the Slope' in a one day binge. it was beautiful, life affirming and wonderful! also basically the only anime my wife has ever liked i'd appreciate any slice of life style shows that kinda flow along those lines: soap opera-y, etc--doesn't have to be music based or a period piece or anything like that, just kinda in that general genre much appreciated!

Haikyuu doesn't have any weird or magic powers, though it does have the occasional visual metaphor. Definitely a more grounded shonen sports series.

Ignore the naysayers-the ending gets a bit rough, both in the anime and the manga, but it's still enjoyable up to the end-and if you do jump into the manga afterwards, start reading from the battle for the brew, since lots of small things start to diverge.

I haven't seen Kids on the Slope but based on the request for "slice of life" and "similar genre to ACCA" I always stump for Barakamon, which is a nice little show about a high-strung, arrogant calligraphist who offends one of his seniors and has to hide out in the countryside and learn to chill out while his mentor tries to smooth it over. Is this deal worth it? Further, is Seven Deadly Sins worth reading? Everything else looks good, but that's the largest collection there.
|
# ? Jun 8, 2018 06:28 |
it's worth it solely for GitS and Alita imo. not a fan of seven sins or inuyashiki (at least judging from the anime), no idea about ajin.

The 18 dollar tier is worth it for the first alita series alone, everything else is gravy. Seriously one of the best bundles they've ever done.

ajin sucks, I read some of it and dropped it pretty quick e: also I think it was the one that had a writer change (maybe the writer dropped out and the artist took over???) so it also has a huge shift in plot/tone and gets even worse

Buy that bundle for Battle Angel Alita. The first hardcover volume alone usually costs more than what they're charging for the literal entire series so far. The other series in that bundle are fine, ~I guess~ (GITS inclusive) but Alita is the main attraction. e: like, I'm not even dogging on anything else in that bundle, but the rest of it's just fine whereas Alita is one of the actual greatest comics ever made in any language. One thing to be aware of is that though they're the individual volumes for the original Battle Angel Alita manga, the translation is from the new hardcover omnibuses. It's a perfectly fine translation, but for some weird reason they decided to go with the original Japanese name of the floating city, Zalem, instead of Tiphares. It's just a minor thing, but just really weird in the face of twenty+ years of localization inertia with every other name change retained, and Last Order still using Tiphares.

Seven Deadly Sins is stock shonen with a few decent characters. If you're a huge Arthurian nerd or took classes on it at some point there's some incredibly deep cuts it makes that might be interesting, but it never really plays around with those concepts enough to read as anything other than B-grade shonen. Not bad, but forgettable.

LORD OF BOOTY posted:From what I understand the other name changes are mostly being kept because the movie uses them, whereas I don't know if it keeps the Zalem/Tiphares change (and we might not until it's out). There's actually a passage in the first omnibus stating they kept the names to be true to the original localization, which is why it's a weird thing to single out.

Yeah, I'm actually going off that passage (I got the first HC for my girlfriend for crimbus and skimmed it before I wrapped it) and iirc, it mentions that, and also cites continuity with the movie as a big reason (since it'd be self-defeating to release it as Gunnm and have her be Gally when the movie that's getting everyone interested in it is called Alita: Battle Angel).
