People film vertically because its easier to disguise the fact that you're filming a random stranger having their public meltdown. Also this might just be me but it's easier to hold your phone with one hand and keep a firm grip on it in when filming "vertical" instead of holding it awkwardly on the side. I don't care how mad you get about the video being verticle, I'm not risking dropping and breaking my stupidly expensive time wasting machine to keep some pedantic assholes on the internet happy.

Well also poo poo like Instagram and Snapchat have a lot to answer for, you cant film stories horizontally in those apps and it's only fairly recent that IG let you upload a horizontal video to your stories If you're only watching poo poo/browsing on your phone as people increasingly are then it also makes sense not to have to flip your phone to get the full view
