Okay so that part with the barrage balloons at level 6+ really really handy to know when trying to guestimate potential invasion sites.

I usually don't have any clue about any given base's defences and it often ends up being a very costly scouting mission for some poor landbased bastards.

Then again I would kinda appreciate some sort of ingame info about possible defence levels just from bombardement, recon flights or even just having troops sitting around in the same hex.
Fair enough some defence lines can be massive yet still well hidden, but come on, there has got to be some sort of visual clue when loving barrage balloons start hanging out in the 10s or 100s in this totally undefended meadow/dirt crossroad thing in bumfuck china

To be fair, the IRL Allies had huge recon challenges with figuring how out fortified some of the late war islands like Iwo Jima and Okinawa were. The Japanese fortifications were largely out of sight and built out of caves or otherwise dug into the rock, so the recon couldn't really tell much about what was fortified where.

Agreed. It’s kind of nuts that you can get detailed reports about troop levels, ships, what types of planes—albeit all filtered through fog of war—but nothing at all on fort level.

Kind of unrelated but my personal pet peeve is a lack of info in the game on what some of the more obscure plane types are good for. I don’t want to have to research how every strange fighter-bomber or RAF Liberator variant that shows up was used. For that matter, what are Venturas even good for? I mainly use them as ASW but then there’s the weird -N variant doesn’t have ASW available as a mission, so who knows.

I get the impression that this game is designed for people who already have that kind of thing memorized, or at least find it really fulfilling to pour through reference books of old airplanes.

The IJN destroyer Shiratsuyu sinks near Surigao Strait after colliding with the oiler Seiyo Maru. Two German minesweepers, M-83 and M-343, are sunk in a running battle near the Channel Islands by HMS Ashanti and the Polish destroyer Piorun. Three American PT boats slip into La Spezia to sink two German (ex-Italian) torpedo boats: TA-26 (ex-Intrepido) and TA-30 (ex-Dragone).

In the game where I spent a shitload of political points and held Rabaul, a squadron of Wirraways did yeoman work in sinking transports and disrupting landed troops. it was tolerably warm work, and their contribution from the air was sorely needed.

No you just need to make sure there's a tender in the harbor that can load the right size torpedos for that particular sub.

As these guys refuse to bomb Chunking, I've dispatched troops to repair an airfield closer to the city. Then I'll rebase all my units there.

We lose a fighter over Burma.

We take some flak losses, but what are those New Zealanders doing south of Rabaul?

Both sides go all out here.

This is a very strange commando raid.

Even on a dull day we lose 30+ aircraft.

RAF bombers mount a heavy raid on German naval forces in Le Havre to eliminate their threat to the amphibious forces. Three torpedo boats, Möwe, Falke, and Jaguar (these are the oceangoing, small-destroyer type), are sunk outright and two damaged. Other casualties include 11 E-boats (MTBs), 30 patrol craft of various sorts, and 19 tugs. Another raid on Boulogne sank three minesweepers, M-402, M-507, and M-550, along with seven R-boats (small ships used largely for minesweeping) and 11 auxiliaries.

Elsewhere, RAF Coastal Command Beaufighters sink the German minesweeper M-103 along with several support vessels off the Ems estuary. The Royal Navy loses two frigates to homing torpedoes in the Channel: Mourne, near the Lizard, to U-767 and Blackwood, near Portland Bill, to U-764.

We pick off a couple more patrol boats.

We then blast the base, trying to get those spitfires. See, I can take advice.

Another force deals with some transports.

We keep even losses vs a thunderstorm!

It can't last for long though!

We're taking some losses today.

I need fresh troops at Manus – they are rebuilding the forts quickly as it's all engineering troops here. The combat system is really stupid!

Wake gets another sweeping by their guns. Tokyo Rose says “and soon thousands of your friends bodies will be floating in the surf.” For once, she is correct!

Another standard day of air losses. I'm shipping more men down to Manus.

Not a bad day for ship kills though!

After remembering there are icons telling you where the enemy has planes, I bombard the enemies fighter base!

Hundreds of enemy bombers still pound Munda every day. There is nothing left there for them to destroy.

The Thunderbolts are still airborne. They have longer ranges and will be in a better defended base.

While not the most interesting of days, I'm now going to line up a string of ships and planes to level Buna.

I've read in various places on the Matrix forums that the game places undue emphasis on RoF for ASW combat, and even through Japanese ASW was never great the in-game devices have a high RoF which makes them disproportionately effective. Or something like that.

the game is structured in such a way that taking lots of individual shots ends up increasing your accuracy, and one of the ASW Escort ships has their depth charge racks modeled with lots of individual depth charge racks, which means they end up being ahistorically accurate against subs

this is the same issue that affects level bombers being able to hit ships from high altitude much more reliably than they might have been expected to IRL

Yet another landing begins at Wake.

Another landing ship is ruined.

It's a shame these things are not loaded.

The I-171 is having another very good day!

The first wave of bombers is turned back.

The Lillys are hit hard, and I think I need to bombard a few more times before I try this again.

The third wave gets some hits in.

We bomb some lost transports.

Hmm, I wonder where all my Oscars have gone?

The afternoon strike sinks a good number of ships.

I'd forgotten I even had subs out here, so effective have they been.

A heavy day for air losses, let's bombard Buna few more times before we try again.

We confirm sinking the Yorktown II, bring on number 3!

I dunno about that. Maybe at first, but eventually I imagine people who were made to board those death traps at gunpoint would have just started jumping overboard as soon as they got to open water.

Come to think of it, that may very well be what's been happening all this time.

The Buna bombardment force gets distracted.

Then they range in on target.

There is a carrier of Truk. A small one, but it's there!

That's a few less fighters in the air.

Instead of bombing the carrier, most of the planes carry out their secondary mission of bombing the island – the air sweep catches them surprise and does horrendous damage.

They then hit the port – I take it back, this is at least two fleet carriers.

The Allies have their own bombardment.

This was definitely the Allies day! They ruled the air like nobodies business.

The seas are still mine however.

That bombardment of Buna was amazing. Do the allies have any type of bomber force at Buna to try and take out your surface combatants?

Also, somehow I expect the US to lose every single one of its CVs in that force because they focus on bombing Truk's fortifications instead of fending off incoming fighters.
