redreader posted:I played this game and just came back to it but am not sure where to start... uh I have: it's easier for other posters to give directions if you list your collected upgrades rather than levels you've visited, fyi. if you've been to the cliffs you must already have collected the mantis claw (wall jump), so the obvious next place to go for you would be the city of tears. you can access the city from the fungal wastes. alternatively, you could leave the wastes in the opposite direction and head into deepnest. if you can afford the lantern, you could check out crystal peak via the crossroads.

I've got mantis claw, map, mothwing cloak, city crest and a rancid egg. I am also lacking a single mask shard, have not upgraded my nail I think, 'old nail', I have the king's idol, cyclone slash and focus + vengeful spirit. I have nothing in the top slot above the spells. For my charms I have wayward compass, gathering swarm, soul catcher and steady body equipped. I also have: stalwart shell, shaman stone, dashmaster, longnail, fury of the fallen, and baldur shell (any advice on a good 'build' with what I have?) But yeah I didn't know I could advance from fungal waste. Thanks!

Thanks for all of the tips! Another really dumb question: I have a steam controller and a ps4 controller. Currently trying the steam controller which I used before when I played this. It's better than the keyboard. I can also use the ps4 controller. For the steam controller I use the left stick to control motion. Should I be using something else? edit: after playing a bit more (got to the mantis village again, it's very hard) I feel like my attack and defense are both very underpowered. Is there anywhere I can grind to get more money to buy a better weapon or something? I haven't gone to the shops since I started playing again. I'm not good enough to always recover my corpse anyway (can't remember if you get your money back) so the last hour or two I've basically earned no money. Without the 'basically'. I've earned no money at all. redreader fucked around with this message at 11:12 on Jun 17, 2018 |

You can upgrade your nail at a place you haven't discovered yet, the City of Tears. You definitely have access to it by now I think. You access it from the Fungal Wastes - if you spied Hornet dashing off somewhere, that's the correct path. You might need a crest or something, but I don't think so? Been a while.

If you want to play the game the way a real Knight would, then what you should do is do the thing at the very bottom of Fungal Wastes, then immediately head West. Have fun .

Just go with whatever control scheme feels best. Personally I think playing any platformer with joysticks when you have fixed left-right movement is the height of folly and that a keyboard is far superior, especially when you have 4-way directional attacks that use the same inputs as movement, but not everyone agrees. There's a sign a short way into the city of tears pointing out the path to the weapon upgrader. It looks like a nail and stands out from all the other signs, so it's pretty easy to find.

I think you can technically get in through a very roundabout route without it, but you'd really have to know the game well already to do that.

Centre-south of City of Tears. Very close to the entrance to the Waterways.

I'm still getting roughed up by the Soul Master. So far I've upgraded my nail once and I still only have 5 HP. M I getting ahead of myself (backtrack and upgrade more) or on the right path.

Slightly cheesy strategy, but Soul Master is really quite hard for how early you can get to him so I don’t feel too bad about it. Just stand at the right wall near the entrance. Jump to avoid the homing/orbiting orbs or shockwaves. You don’t need to worry about the charge attack because it will stop just before it reaches you. You will get plenty of opportunities to hit him, it takes a bit longer than if you follow him around but you are much safer while doing it.

Thing that helps a lot for the Soul Master, and many other enemies as well, is learning how to pogo off enemies. You can attack downwards, and it'll make you bounce up a bit if it hits. You can use this to go over the big jerk when he does the charge move, it's nearly impossible to jump over him without it at your current state of upgrades. This also works on spike hazards!

I am completely stuck. I think I have done everything there is to do in the green path and I've just run around the whole place 10 times. I can't find the map guy either so it's just confusing as all hell. Is there some traversal option I should have unlocked to be here? I'm definitely hitting the point where this just feels super frustrating and the game juts feels like dead ends everywhere.

Map guy is in a large room with several of those hanging platforms that you can cut down, I want to say it's towards the eastern edge of the area (if you can approximate that in your head without having a map). If you have the sound on you'll hear him humming to himself as you start to get close.

Just got this the other day and it’s really great so far. I’m trying to play through it without any spoilers, but I have a quick question - is it possible to get the first nail upgrade (I’m assuming there is more than one) before fighting the Mantis Lords?

I decided discretion was the better part of valor and went and kicked someone else's rear end first. I put them on notice when the first Mantis Lord murdered me effortlessly and I didn't come back. A certain teleporty jerk, though? No such courtesy. I only let him kill me like 5 times before I decided to come back better armed. Then I did and now I have a new tool in my arsenal. Then I accidentally found the plot in a cave. This is a good game.

Conversely, I didn't get very deep into Deepnest (heh) until I had done just about everything else in the game. Also conversely I managed to beat Soul Master on my first visit to City of Tears because I thought it was what I "had" to do next in order to progress. It's so nice to have a 2D Metroidvania that really feels like there isn't a "correct" order.

Yeah I managed to beat the Soul Master on my second try the first time I reached City of Tears because I didn't know I had any other choice. Beating him so easily led me to believe that was correct as well until I read more about other people's struggle with him itt. It really is a testament to this game that basically everyone plays it totally differently. I was talking to my friend who recommended it to me throughout my playthrough and he was always blown away or even confused at the totally different routes I'd take. Conversely he'd sometimes probe me to see which things I hadn't seen yet and would be blown away that I'd made it as far as I had without running into certain things. The one that got him the most was that I didn't unlock the tram until after I'd beaten the game for the first time. I genuinely missed the tram pass and because it's up in its own nook I never had any reason to backtrack there for another chance to stumble upon it. I didn't find it until I started looking for a guide in order to hit 100%

Just lost my first shade full 'o geo. Stupid-rear end mountain full of stupid-rear end bugs. I needed that thousand geo. On the bright side, I did take down the Mantis Lords on my third try. I can definitely see where people say they 'get' the combat after that fight. It definitely rewarded reflexes, but rewarded patience even more. Deepnest, though? gently caress that noise.

Picked this game up a couple days ago, and drat, it's one of the best metroidvania games I've ever played, it's right up there with Ori and the blind forest. And I do like reading through this thread and seeing all the different ways people made their way through the game. For me I got the cloak then went straight for mantis village and deepnest, without upgrading my nail and only finding one extra mask. The Mantis lords fight was crazy fun and I managed to beat it on my first try, I really like how the trick to that fight wasn't just learning how to dodge and attack, but also when to heal. Deepnest though, I really wish I had upgraded my nail first, because God drat those big blade arm dudes blocking the tunnels were not fun to fight in the slightest, even knowing you could lure them into a room with a high roof and pogo them too death. The only thing I don't really like so far is the when you have to travel across a room via sword pogo, there's one area in the deepnest where you have to bounce across the room on top of a moving enemy while climbing walls covered in spikes, and I don't know if it's just the switch controls or what, but half the times I died is because I would slash forward rather than down. Anyway, looking forward to the city of tears.

I noticed it when I was going through the area and figured it was big and important enough to be what the randomish switches I was hitting were for. As for the Lords, I've done quite a bit of exploring and have some gimmicky charms available. I never felt like I had time to heal, so I went in coated entirely in Lifeblood and focused on not getting hit. I went with different means for Soul Master, running mostly charms that boosted my spell power. I love the ways the charms can adjust your playstyle.

I just got to the city and I'm stuck: I used the city crest to get in. I explored, got a nail upgrade and met mantis after a cutscene. I can't get back out via the same place I got the crest. I can't see the map guy anywhere. I haven't found any more shops or anything. There are two places where I'm stuck on the other side of a door. Hot secret for the Mantis Lords fight: Whenever you're facing one lord, you can easily heal by climbing up one side of the arena. The mantis will follow you to use their wallgrab boomerang attack at your level, which gives you plenty of time to drop back down to the floor and heal safely. e: Also when fighting two mantis lords and they do the boomerang attacks, the >< variation (as opposed to the <> one that you have to jump) has a blind spot where you can stand in the very center and heal.
